I used to wait tables. Believe me, I earned my tips! While it made me an overtipper, I still refuse to tip anywhere and everywhere.

No sorry....I am not tipping those people. The tipping is getting out of control! I tip waitresses/waiters, nail salon ladies, shoe shine guys, car wash guys, etc. I have to draw the line somewhere!
No one tips me for all the numbers I type in and add up in spreadsheets everyday.

I feel like...Not a chance in helll! Since when do we tip people for doing their job? That's like tipping the lady the checks you out at the grocery store or at Macy's....this is silly and when asked to "tip" I don't

As far as I'm concerned, a tip outside a resteraunt (where here in NY waiters & waitresses are paid below minimum wage because it is assumed people will tip) is ONLY called for if you recieve outstanding service, or the service provider goes above and beyond the call of duty. The guy at McD's is being paid to take my order, get my order, and bag my order. He/she does not qualify for a tip. Same thing at Starbucks, Dunkin' Donuts or any one of a hundred other places . . . he/she is being paid to take my order, make my order and bag my order - doing your job that you get paid to do does not qualify you to receive a tip. I do NOT put money in jars labled "for tips" EVER.
I do put change in the "take a penny, leave a penny" jars though.

That happened to me at a place in Bellmore. I tipped a women and she said, " I did your feet and hands". I was mortified!! So I went "oh" and gave her another dollar.. Some freaking nerve. 
omg that happened to me too! the lady did like a more expensive fill in for my tips---that i did NOT realize she was doing something other than what i asked--and the price was waaaay more than i had budgeted. so i only had about $5 or $6 bucks left--and i gave it to her. and she said the SAME thing to me.
i was just flabbergasted and said "What?" and she didn't say anything. the nerve!

I feel as though tipping is getting out of hand. For certain professions (waiters, hairdressers....) I understand. They are providing you with a service. Now, though, there are tip jars everywhere. People want to get tipped for doing their job. With this in mind,

I don't think it's up to the cashier to decide what to do w/ my change, first of all. Aside from that, I do not associate their job w/ a waitress in a resturant. I am not getting served at a table. They are just doing their job. I don't think places like Starbucks (especially) and DD or McD's should get tips.

I agree on all of the above!
We just got back from Ralph's for Italian ices and this begs the question... most of them are high school kids working... they're getting paid hourly, right? do you tip them $1 on your $2 ice??

I am a former McDonald's worker. There was always a policy against accepting tips, but customers often dropped coins here and there in the seating area. The person assigned to clean the area would cash in.

I have a simple rule. I never tip anybody that has a "cup" asking for tips.
Nobody. Tipping is getting outrageous.
The Starbucks employees don't need tips. Their benefits are better than mine.
And as far as the DD people go... DD is way overpriced for what you get they don't deserve any tips.
I won't even comment on McDonalds.

I only tip at restaurants where I sit down. LOL.
I tip the nail salon and if I have stuff delivered to the house (which is not very often).
I'll tip people that come to do work on the house as well.
I worked in McDs years ago, and, I do remember a customer tipping me for getting him a cup of coffee. I thought it was so sweet.
If I have change, I'll throw it in the "Mcds house".

As I was reading this thread, I was also thinking this! My 34 year old sister just quit her 9-5 and is going back to nursing school while living off her savings. She told me the other day she is thinking about applying at Starbucks b/c the pay and benefits are so good and after you are trained there, you can get a job as a barista in any fancy coffee house, plus the stress is nowhere near what she was facing at her old job.
I have never seen a tip cup at Starbucks, but I always see them at DD.

Well, my cousin works at a Starbucks and she gets paid very well, plus has benefits for working only part-time. Not sure why they need a tip, and even she said she thinks it's nuts. HOWEVER, tons of regulars go there and tip very well because they will have their coffee made and ready for them if they come in at the same time everyday. My cousin makes more in tips than salary! One guy slips a $100 bill in their tip cup every week!

They're not expected to.
But I'm sure that when these people were in college and someone threw them a few extra bucks for something it really made a difference to them. I guess people forget as they get older.

I think the gripe is more about the expectation than the tip itself- and it does seem like tip cups are everywhere.
My local DD drive through has a mug that says "tips for outstanding service". I guess they do an outstanding job of handing the coffee out the window, but how much is that worth?
People who work at Starbucks, DD, make minimum wage; people who wait tables don't. It's also harder work (I know from experience) and *those* people deserve tips.
