All you non-tippers who go to Starbucks for an $8 cup of coffee can't throw the college student behind the counter a dollar?

There are lots of college students working at grocery stores. Do you tip them?

Why should I? They make decent money, and have nice benifits. They're income is not based on tips. If the service is GREAT then yea maybe, but again they make as much as the people at the grocery store and Macy's who go to college so would you throw them a dollar? This is not about should you tip a waitress or a bartender this is about tipping people who do NOT rely on this for income. I work on the ambulance....should somebody tip me for giving "exceptional" care to their mother?

People who work no harder than most of us do are starting to feel entitled to tips. Sorry, Charlie. Not everything in Starbucks is $8, not every stabucks wroker is a college student or a boy scout. You can try to paint a custimer as spoiled and a worker as deserving, but the reality is that we all walk out of starbucks and back to our own jobs, our own budgets (which do not include random unnecessary tipping), and our own hard work. You're painting a skewed picture Sorry.

The guy behind the counter went to drop my change in the cup. I looked at him like he was nuts- "you want a tip for handing me a styrofoam cup?"

Now, this is the problem- Not only do they put a cup out- But he automatically tries to make you tip him...

Tip cups make me feel uncomfortable. After all my bills if I tipped at all those places it would add up to alot of my savings...

BUT for the rich people (executives making 200K+ a year) I think that they probably will tip so its good for those kind of people.

Re: Tipping.... How do we feel about tipping in places like DD Starbucks & McDonalds??

I havent seen any tip jars in the Starbucks I've been to down here.

Cold Stone I tip because I like hearing them sing Chat Icon

McDonalds I dont think I've ever seen a tip jar.

I dont have any DD close to me so I havent been to one in a long time.

Dont get me started on the sky caps at the airport that print out your boarding pass but have signs all over the place that tips not included. Those get on my nerves because they will literalyl stand their with their hands out waiting for a tip Chat Icon

Though I must say on Saturday DH and I went to BRU to pick up the glider and 2 girls wheeled the glider to our truck and loaded it up for us. That box was huge and very heavy. DH went to give them a tip and they smiled and said it's ok you dont need to tip us. DH said are you sure, thats a big box, here you were so helpful. They smiled and again said it's ok you have yourself a great day.

At Publix they have signs all over the place and even wear buttons that say carrying your bags to your car is a service we happily provide, no need to tip.

There are also a lot of college students working at Macy's, Old Navy, Toys r Us, fill in the retail store here....

Are you tipping them after they ring you up or help you on the sales floor?

So I just walked out of my local deli where they toss your own salad. There is a tip jar by the cashier. Now, I don't even know if the guy who tossed my salad shares in that tip.

Anyway... so I pay and leave. I get to my office- no fork, napkins, knives- NADA. So you want a tip and you don't even give me the basic utensils (apparantly its self-serve). Chat Icon

Yeah, its getting out of control.

I think the question is, why should they be expected to?

They're not expected to.

But I'm sure that when these people were in college and someone threw them a few extra bucks for something it really made a difference to them. I guess people forget as they get older.

I don't agree, I think people do EXPECT too much. I won't tip someone for doing his/her job. If they go above and beyond sure I'll give them something.

When I was in college I had many jobs, bank teller, apartment leasing agent, day camp counselor and I never received any tips. I also never expected any tips. I expected to do my job to the best of my ability for the rate my employer and I had agreed upon.

Exactly. When I was in college, I made sure that I got a job that could sustain my lifestyle, instead of having to depend on asking others for a handout. Yes - I worked 40 hours a week and went full time to school. I didn't work 20 hours a week and then put my hand out asking for someone else to pay me for doing what I was already expected to do.

Same for my career choice- I made sure that I was going into a profession that could sustain the lifestyle I wanted to lead.

Hmm, a tip for the DD college kid?

During the terrible rain we had last Sunday, I was rushing through a DD parking lot, slipped and fell right outside the door to DD.

I got up and went inside to get my coffee. That poor college student looked at me laughing and never asked me if I was ok. Whatever, I would have chuckled too, but he was still rude and a bit excessive.

I got my coffee and my change - which I put in my pocketbook. He looked at me with a straight face and said, "Thanks for the tip" and rolled his eyes.

Spare me with the poor college kid routine. How about you try and help someone out and then I'll give you my change.

Just refill and reuse the Starbucks rewards card / DD Card and you won't have any cash on hand to tip..no pressure.

Re: Tipping.... How do we feel about tipping in places like DD Starbucks & McDonalds??

i have never felt pressure to tip in DD or starbucks, and it depends on my mood, sometimes i will drop my change into the tip jar, I go to a really nice DD now, and i tip i feel that they are super nice, and go out of their way, so i threw 1.25 in the tip jar today.

I was in a store in the mall called Sabon, and i totally forgot how much my scrub way, and i took out my money 60 dollars, and it was 32.50 so the guy is like u dont need all that but you can tip me if you want.

And yet NYers love to talk about how "expensive" it is to live in NY.. the tipping culture has alot to do with this.

If you are throwing $1s at baristas, $20 to every guy that comes in to check your water meter, delivers a package, etc. you ARE paying more to "live" than other people around the country Chat Icon

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I wouldn't tip a college student working at Kohl's. Why should a Starbucks employee get special treatment? They chose to work there.

ETA. Didn't put my reply. I don't tip at a food place unless I'm sitting and being served. Unless I get exceptional customer service, then I'll put a tip in the tip cup.

See I would have said "you laughing at me when I fell on my azz & didn't show any concern for me was tip enough".
Then I would have knocked his teeth out.

but that's just me.

See, I would have said "Thanks for laughing at me and not asking if I was okay... and you're welcome for the lesson in customer service. Curious, does the manager know you make rude comments to customers who don't tip? Can I verify that with her? Oh, but on second thought, here is a tip - consider a career that isn't customer service related."

Poor customer service is a big pet peeve of mine.

I can see where you'd think that. I am a Starbucks drinker too. I didn't mean to imply that I'm not one of them. I just happen to believe that the more you give...the more you get. And I've found this to be true. I guess to each their own.

I will say one last thing though. Why are we expected to tip a bartender for opening a Coors light bottle but not someone who takes 5 minutes to make a latte? Shouldn't it be the other way around?
