Re: Tipping.... How do we feel about tipping in places like DD Starbucks & McDonalds??
Or you could do things my way...only use your bank card so that you never have any cash on you. This works wonders when people come looking for tips & it is not like using a credit card where I have to pay at the end of the month for a coffee.

[ I can see where you'd think that. I am a Starbucks drinker too. I didn't mean to imply that I'm not one of them. I just happen to believe that the more you give...the more you get. And I've found this to be true. I guess to each their own.
I agree with this, but when I "give," it's to a bona fide charity. & I do find that one does "get" upon giving. To each his/her own. With what they're charging at Starbucks, they can pay their employees properly, and I can make a donation to the American Heart Assciation.

I will say one last thing though. Why are we expected to tip a bartender for opening a Coors light bottle but not someone who takes 5 minutes to make a latte? Shouldn't it be the other way around?
You have made an EXCELLENT point here!!!!
Sorry but this is a bad example.
A bartender is no different than a waitress when it comes to pay.
If they are on the books they are paid below minimum wage. And a lot of bars have standard reporting procedures similar to waitresses.
I have a friend that had to report 15% of her income at the bar she worked at, whether she was tipped 15% or not. The bartenders were the same. 15% of the register.

No sorry....I am not tipping those people. The tipping is getting out of control! I tip waitresses/waiters, nail salon ladies, shoe shine guys, car wash guys, etc. I have to draw the line somewhere! No one tips me for all the numbers I type in and add up in spreadsheets everyday.
Amen.... I am lucky I even get a thank you for all the work I do. Tipping is getting ridiculous. If you want to make more money... Here's a tip... work at a full service restaurant.

Definately not - they are paid for their jobs they do not need to get tipped. I think we are getting tipping crazy around here.

All you non-tippers who go to Starbucks for an $8 cup of coffee can't throw the college student behind the counter a dollar?
For me, if I start tipping everyone, then i can no longer afford these small luxuries. I can afford a $2 ccofee, but when that becomes $2.50-$3 when a tip is added, i would prefer to just make my own cofee at home. Should i not enjoy starbucks b/c i cant afford to tip?? Some people are hard for cash in the same way the employee's are. It's just ridiculous.

I usually drop whatever change I get in the cup. Once however, There's a Dunkin by my job. You go to the counter, place your order, they hand you the appropriate sized cup and you go to a counter and make the coffee yourself. The guy behind the counter went to drop my change in the cup. I looked at him like he was nuts- "you want a tip for handing me a styrofoam cup?"
How do we feel about this???
First of all, DO NOT assume I am giving you my change as a tip- a tip is opional. Secondly, tipping is OUT OF CONTROL in this country. No one is running around tipping me for doing things that are out of my job description. I am lucky if I get a thank you. But to get a tip just for DOING your job- don't get it.
Edited to add: I am a huge tipper(25%) and it annoys DH no end- WHEN it is warranted. Sorry, handing me a cup doesn't count.

Re: Tipping.... How do we feel about tipping in places like DD Starbucks & McDonalds??
There's only one DD where I sometimes toss my extra change into the tip cup...and that's the one by my house.
I stop there a lot of mornings for my coffee, and they always recognize me. They seem to be nicer to me than to the other customers, and always give me a nod hello even when they are busy. They don't do that to everyone.
And they make the best coffee out of all the DD I've been to. They make it just the way I like it.
I don't always tip, only when the mood strikes, and it's usually just my change.
I've never tipped at any other DD, never at Starbucks, and certainly at McD.
