Re: Toddler Restaurant Situation -- WWYD?
I am also in the minority about the DVD player. If that is the only way your child will sit at a restaurant I don't see the big deal at all. As long as it isn't turned up loud who cares!!
Having one is the only way we could go to eat on the cruise. Otherwise we would have had to had room service every night.
Sometimes we need it, sometimes we don't. He doesn't always have to have it but if we need it, so what!!
I don't want to be a prisoner in my own home.

Re: Toddler Restaurant Situation -- WWYD?
I don't bring a portable DVD player, but at that age, I did bring a bag of googies, including her favorite books, a game or two, a coloring book and some crayons. And I always order a glass of water and ice because she could entertain herself for 10 minutes playing with ice.
Now that I have my iphone, when we go to a restaurant, to keep her spirit at bay while we wait for the food, I downloaded some preschool educational games on my iphone that I let her play quietly.

I think you did the right thing. And if you let him have a DVD player at the table now, he will always want it, and I think it would be a very hard habit to break.
ITA, thats the worst thing to give a child. Its not good to watch TV at the table, and its a VERY bad habit!!!
You did the right thing!

Re: Toddler Restaurant Situation -- WWYD?
Just wanted to add, DH and I get plenty of opportunities to go out to dinner alone because my MIL is pretty much always available to watch him if we want to go out.
And trust me, I know how it is to have the unruly toddler, believe me. I guess because we are still able to go out to dinner without our son I don't feel that we're missing out on the experience by the one or two incidents (so far) in the restaurant where I had to leave.
If our only option to get out is bringing our son with us I by no means want to judge the way parents get their children to cooperate. Because again, I know how it can be. But for us the going to dinner part doesn't mean enough to me to start a bad habit because I KNOW my son will expect it every time. The bigger thing we're trying to teach him, and this applies to at home as well as in daycare, is that he needs to sit at the table to eat and not run around.

this is what i think it all boils down to, and why i am personally against DVD players at the table. to me there is a big difference between coloring and watching a movie while eating dinner. but like i said, i am not there yet so who knows?

I probably would have done the same thing as you. ITA. And I would let them know that his restaurant routine cannot include running around.
BTDT, and I know how it sucks to cut an evening short.

I would have gotten up from the table if DC was carrying on and see if I could get DC calmed down enough to go back to the table. If not, I would have left with DC.
I've done the same...And i can never take either girls out of their highchair cause they'd never go back in. They're pretty much overall well behaved at restaurants..but they know we have no problem asking for our stuff to go and leaving if we have too.
And as for the DVD player...I was that mom who REFUSED to allow TV in the car until my 2nd hit 1.5..SHE HATES the car and will only sit for an hour at most..so on long rides, I'm never without the DVD player.
If it's only once in a while i don't see the problem with the dvd player, as long as he would be okay listening to it with the volume almost turned all the way down cause i wouldn't want to disturb other patrons.

Re: Toddler Restaurant Situation -- WWYD?
We don't believe in DVD players at the table. We bring crayons and a few small toys, and that's it.
If dinner is almost over, we leave, but we have been working on teaching Cailen we leave when others are done eating - not in the middle. DH - even at 18 mts - has taken Cailen out for time outs if he carries on and then back in the seat. Harsh, but at almost 2, he knows the drill when we go out with family. You will get there - eating out at this age is always hard - no matter what you do or bring!

Re: Toddler Restaurant Situation -- WWYD?
The only way I could get through a dinner somewhere was by bringing the DVD player when she was that young (with earphones). I don't care if it seemed appropriate, it was a nightmare to go anywhere with her at that stage. A little peace for me, I think it's worth it. Otherwise, I would have left with her.
