Towns on LI with the best school districts?
What are the towns/areas on Long Island that have the best schools? Need to seriously think about moving with my second DD on the way and I have no idea.

Re: Towns on LI with the best school districts?
This is a very common topic. The first thing most people ask in response is: define "best".
Some schools are small, so there everyone knows everyone, and you aren't just a "number". However, they often have less extracurricular activities. The bigger schools have more sports, but DC may not be able to get on the team, since there are dozens of kids trying out for 1 spot.
Some schools have a strong focus on special needs. Others focus on the arts.
There is no "best" school district. I bet if everyone listed their idea of the "best" district, I could find reasons why it might not be.

Wow great points. For us I would say a school district that is strong academically regardless of size. At this age I have no idea if my girls would be interested in sports, but if they are anything like me it would be a big fat nope, LOL. Academics and safety would be our big priorities.

Other thing is price range. No point in anyone suggesting towns that are out of your budget. Also are you interested in Nassau or Suffolk? What are your other wants/needs?

Yes I think price range is the big issue here.
Some of the best districts are in towns where decent sized houses can easily eclipse 500-600k, like Jericho/Syosset/Plainview-OldBethpage for instance.
If your budget is more 300-400k, there are still plenty of towns with good SDs.

you also need to take in to consideration that some schools are very diverse and a lot of people love that. others not so much.
for Academics only, I believe newsday releases a report every year, and I think there a few others floating around. But with those, comes a lot of criticism on how they are based.
you should do a search on the home board of "school districts"
you will get a TON of info and maybe even some links

Re: Towns on LI with the best school districts?
Also, remember that it's all relative. An "average" school for Long Island would be a "great" school in another state. Even middle-of-the road districts here are good academically, and usually very safe. With the exception of about 6 districts we can all name off the top of our heads, your kids would get a good education and be safe in the school buildings.
Now, if you have $700K+ to spend on a house and are looking for an Ivy-League factory, that's a different story...
