Two year old having tubes put in and tonsils and adenoids removed..

Has anyone had this done to their two year old? Or even close to or around two? Our little guy is scheduled for Tuesday to have all three done. I'm a nervous wreck about it. Initially he was just getting the tubes put in and it's escalated, after a sleep study, to adenoids and tonsils being removed. I'm just curious how his recovery will be.....he can't really speak yet and I feel awful that he won't be able to communicate how he feels. We do have to spend at the very least the first night in the hospital (it's being done at cohens).
Any experience with this? Any feedback or advice would be greatly appreciated! Also, we leave for Disney 16 days after his surgery.....he should be ok right? TIA!!!!

My DS had tonsils and adenoids out last year at 2 1/2. He was up and around in the hospital play room in about an hour.

We spent 1 night there. His full recovery took about 1 week. For some strange reason, he never drank milk again after the surgery.

I was a train wreck, he was fine. You will be both do great ! Good Luck.

Ok we have been through this but in 2 separate surgerues

My son had tubes put in and his adenoids taken out. That recovery was about 3 days and he could have hard foods for a week

at 2 he had his tonsils out- honestly recovery took about 10 days

Some things that might help - buy the numbing lollipops - they help when they are in pain

stock up on ice pops - they tell you to stay away from red things so you can diffentiate from blood

my son had to stay over for the night. Our ent used the night time to over hydrate him. My son would not drink the first day home. Aftew 2 days he was doing better but about 6 days he got worse for another 2 days and then pretty much back to normal

another thing i may try and get is sippy sure cup. it allows you to give medicine and juice at the same time. My son loved to take medicine but the tylenol with codine turned him off medicine

good luck. it is hard to see them upset but my son is doing so much better. he sleeps so much sounder now and can breath better and hears better and better balance

you got great advice from the previous poster but just wanted to say my son had tubes in and adenoids out when he was 18 months and everything was fine! i know it's tonsils for your DS too so that is a bit more but he will be OK! the worse part for us was the anticipation and then right when he came out of the anesthesia that was hard. other than that he had a great recovery and went home that day. never knew what happened. good luck! it will be alright!Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Two year old having tubes put in and tonsils and adenoids removed..

My 2 oldest had their tonsils and adnoids out at 2. The oldest was 2 yrs 8 months, my middle was 2 weeks after his 2nd birthday. I was a mess, but the surgery went so quickly both times. They both had to stay in the hospital overnight bc they had sleep apnea, and needed to be monitored. The first couple of days were fine, its when it starts to "crust up" (sorry I have total pregnancy brain and cant think og the right termChat Icon ) when it really starts to hurt them. Load up on ices (no red), yogurt, anything soft that they like.

My baby just had tubes put in at 8 months old, the surgery was over super quickly, and he was totally back to himself almost right away. He cried for like 2 secs in the post op room, until he got his binky, then he fell asleep, and when he woke up, there was nothing different about him at all!

Good luck! I know how stressful it is Chat Icon If you have anuy questions, please fm me Chat Icon

ETA:they also suggest buying the tylenol suppositories in case your child will not swallow the tylenol. I bought them, but never had to use them, but it was nice to have them just in case.

Re: Two year old having tubes put in and tonsils and adenoids removed..

My son had his tonsils and aednoids removed in October at 4 years old.
From what i've heard, in hearing other people's stories, my son had a rough recovery. I've heard people say it only took a few days, but they were also younger.
It was very worth it. He can finally sleep without shaking down the house & he has had less ear infections, without getting tubes.

Re: Two year old having tubes put in and tonsils and adenoids removed..

Thanks to all! His surgery went great....he was even pretty good the days after (we're at one week post op now). Our issue came two days later when he ended up with a seizure, at home. They still don't know what caused it and may never know but it was hands down the worst day of my life. I felt completely helpless.....they're guessing it may have been the Tylenol codeine that he may have had an allergic reaction to. Just hoping it was an isolated incident and never happens again. Fingers crossed that's the case....thankfully he's been doing great otherwise. He's on a soft foods diet for two weeks...which is fine bc almost everything he eats is soft. He actually hasn't had one ice pop since! Hopefully we're on the mend and this is behind us! Thanks for all the adivce! Always good to hear other people's experiences. Chat Icon

Re: Two year old having tubes put in and tonsils and adenoids removed..

DS has had tubes 2 times, the last time (he was 2.5) he had adnoids out as well.

It went really well-I don't know how much time the tonsils add but for the tubes plus adnoids it was over so fast, and fingers crossed DS has been doing soooo well.

Good luck!
