um, wow... inappropriate text message (or am I overly sensitive?)

I tend to think that my sense of humor is fairly intact - and I am not a "PC" queen by any stretch... but I just received an off-color text message from an acquaintance that I find a bit inappropriate... Am I overreacting, or is this just a bit, um, wrong? (I'm not taking it personally of course, just find it to be very inappropriate and question why she'd even send this. Knowing this person, it probably went to her entire contact list.)

The message read "Just a reminder tomorrow is 'Hug a Retard' day so don't flip out like you did last year. Nobody is trying to steal your helmet. : )"

Am I wrong to think that this was inappropriate?

No, it's inappropriate... esp. being that it came from someone you don't know very well.

That was just wrong. Using the "R" word is also a BIG pet peeve of mine. How insensitive.

inappropriate, but most likely it was sent as a mass forward to everyone in their phone.

ETA: I agree with the poster above me. The "R" word is totally inappropriate and should not be used!!!

We used to be close friends (she was in my wedding)... but we've basicaly grown apart. Maybe "acquaintance" was the wrong word -- "old friend I haven't heard from in a really long time" would probably be a better description.

I get that it was a mass text message forward -- I just don't get why someone would pass that on... l

I wouldn't take offense it it were a friend especially. I don't let things like text mssgs really bother me. No offense..but there is so much crap gonig on and passed thru the Internet and texts... it's a waste of time to give it a second thought.

Re: um, wow... inappropriate text message (or am I overly sensitive?)

To be completely honest, I wouldn't have been offended if it unless it was someone I barely knew..

Personally, I would be offended because the joke was sub par..... appropriate or not...

Re: um, wow... inappropriate text message (or am I overly sensitive?)

I wouldn't get worked up or offended over it. it was probably a mass text, which I delete automatically anyway.

she probably doesn't even know she sent it to you per se....it wouldn't really bother me. it's just stupid "humor".

Re: um, wow... inappropriate text message (or am I overly sensitive?)

For the record, I don't believe I said I was offended by it. In fact, I think I said I wasn't taking it personally (and was very careful not to use the word offended). I said I thought it was inappropriate and was surprised that someone would want to pass this along.

I just was curious to find out if I was the only one who thought something like this was inappropriate and lacking humor... Others are free to feel differently. Chat Icon

I would't get offended... But I do think it was stupid and not funny at all.

I guess this is what I was getting at. I'm not offended by it really - I just was surprised someone would pass it along... was curious if maybe I was being too PC or failing to see some hilarious humor... Chat Icon

Re: um, wow... inappropriate text message (or am I overly sensitive?)

ftr, I wasn't comparing my response to you. I used the words to descirbe how I would feel, and not in relationship or to imply that you would use those same words to describe what you thought/felt.

I don't think anyone implied that you used the word offended to describe your state of being

Fair enough. I do get that. I just wanted to be clear that I wasn't all worked up over it, as I think could have been reasonably gleaned from the way I worded my OP... I was more like "uuuuhhh, huh?" Chat Icon

Re: um, wow... inappropriate text message (or am I overly sensitive?)

I wouldn't be offended by that. I got a text similar to that from a friend once and I laughed at it. I didn't forward it, because some of my friends would definitely be offended by the word 'retard' but I don't let things like that get to me.

This is how I feel. It would definitely make me look at the person a little different and I would lose a little respect for them.
