Very inappropriate and immature..i would assume the text came from a 12-16 year old, at best.

Considering I live with mentally "retarded" family member, I would be offended. I would also tell the person who sent that to me that I found it inappropriate. I've had people make those kinds of "jokes" in my presence (with them fully aware of my family member) and I have called them out on it.

Mind you, I am probably one of the least politically correct people you could find Chat Icon but this is a huge pet peeve of mine.

I don't get easily offended...I grew up with 3 brothers who said the most off color things all the time and we all pretty much laugh about ANYTHING, including relentlessly making fun of one another..

However..the word "retard" bothers me very much. I hate when the word is used in that context. It makes me cringe! The person does sound like a 15 year old boy...not a grown woman!

Re: um, wow... inappropriate text message (or am I overly sensitive?)

IMO it's just a lame joke and certainly not PC by a long shot... but for some reason, she thought you would find it funny.

Maybe she thought you were good enough friends (minus the fact that you haven't spoken in awhile) for her to include you on the list of recipients.

I have to admit, when it comes to staying in touch with my friends, I'm not the best so I guess I've been guilty of forwarding jokes to people I haven't spoken to in awhile. Maybe she thought this was a good way to reconnect with you? Chat Icon

WOW! How insensitive and really immature. I think anyone who finds the humor in this would be slightly moronic themselves.

Is your friend 12? I've never heard an adult make that kind of joke....

come work at my job for a day... it's jokes like that all day long. it wouldn't offend me because i am used to that kind of humor... but if i were her, i wouldn't have sent something like that unless i was close enough to the person to know they would find it funny.
and my cousin is mentally retarded, so it's not as though i don't know anyone like that so i wouldn't understand. i do understand how some people take offense, i am just not one of those people. i am in the minority here.

Re: um, wow... inappropriate text message (or am I overly sensitive?)

Hmmmm, I wouldn't be offended tho I certainly see where it's inappropriate in a mass forward. I get that it's a joke, tho I personally wouldn't find it funny and wouldn't pass it on. I'd just shrug my shoulders and maybe roll my eyes, but I wouldn't get my panties in a bunch or anything. Chat Icon

ETA: "Retarded" isn't a bad word, it's just been given a negative connotation over the years by people using it in poor taste. Retard=slow. So if someone is said to be mentally retarded it means that they are slow. I'm sure many of you have heard of the AHRC, the Association for the Help of Retarded Children. Used in proper context it's a perfectly acceptable word.

I would't get offended... But I do think it was stupid and not funny at all.

This is how I feel. It would definitely make me look at the person a little different and I would lose a little respect for them.

I get those stupid things in email forwards and text forwards and I really don't think twice about it. I personally have a great sense of humor, but I don't think that particular joke was funny at all. I just delete and go on with my life. Some people have sophomoric senses of humor. But I would not get personally offended or give it a second thought, no. That person prob. got it as a forward to her, and just forwarded it again thinking it was funny.

Re: um, wow... inappropriate text message (or am I overly sensitive?)

I found it offensive right up until the end and then I laughed...I thought it was silly and childish, but sometimes things that are off color make me giggle like I am 12 again.....JMHO

Re: um, wow... inappropriate text message (or am I overly sensitive?)

i've gotten that same text from my sister - didn't bother me then, i just kind of rolled my eyes and deleted it.

however, if i got it from someone i was barely in touch with, i would wonder what made them think they knew me well enough to send it to me Chat Icon

If I received it, I would be offended because I have a special needs child. IMO, mass emails of that nature are inappropriate due to the large number of special needs people and the even larger number of people who care about them.

While I would never personally use that word, I wouldn't be offended if that text was sent to me...

on the flip side, it's extraordinarily childish, and not funny.... and odd to send to you, especially given your current relationship.
