Hmmmm, I wouldn't be offended tho I certainly see where it's inappropriate in a mass forward. I get that it's a joke, tho I personally wouldn't find it funny and wouldn't pass it on. I'd just shrug my shoulders and maybe roll my eyes, but I wouldn't get my panties in a bunch or anything. 
ETA: "Retarded" isn't a bad word, it's just been given a negative connotation over the years by people using it in poor taste. Retard=slow. So if someone is said to be mentally retarded it means that they are slow. I'm sure many of you have heard of the AHRC, the Association for the Help of Retarded Children. Used in proper context it's a perfectly acceptable word.
i agree with all of this. it was in bad taste to send, but i wouldnt be offended.

Your friend ... acquaintance ... whoever it was that sent this ... is an idiot! As a Mom of a special needs child, I take offense to anyone using the word "retard." As for reference to the helmet ... they save children's lives. My son's specifically ... on a number of occassions! All I can say is IDIOT! People should READ THINGS before forwarding them on.

I just think that few people understand how hurtful the word can be. I cringe when I hear it - but other people use it in daily conversation.

I've been working with the developmentally disabled (i.e. mentally retarded) for about 20 years. I don't take offense to the message or take it personally, but I think it's in poor taste. It annoys me when people make jokes about the disabled, but I usually just take it where it comes from and let it go.
