UPDATED!!!!! Night 1 of CIO - he threw up. I quit
UPDATE!!!! Well, after 5 nights I can say that Athan goes to sleep in his crib by himself and sleeps basically the entire night. We still ge up once or twice to pat his back for a few seconds if needed but then he just turns his head and goes out!!!!
Not sure what to call our technique - after Night one of CIO Chris and I decided it's not for us (or for Athan). So the very next night we brought up a futon mattress and slept on his floor. It took 18 minutes of crying and moaning and groaning and talking to hime, soothing him, playing with his FP Aquarium, reassuring him that we are right there.. and then he went to sleep. Night 3 it took about 10 minutes of playing with the aquarium. Night 4 I took him by his hand and we walked into his room, looked at the crib and Athan said Na-Na (modified Greek baby term for sleep) and I laid him in, turned on the fish, and he was out. He even NAPS in his crib now!!! Chris or I will lay with him for about 5 minutes and then sneak into our room. And we are done. Now it's almost to the point of us not even having to sleep there with him. He is no longer scared of the crib or of his room, and last night for example he was moaning and looking all sleepy after he woke up from a nap and was laying all over us in th eliving room when I decide dto just pick him up, put him in his crib, and he fell asleep right away!!!! THANK YOU EVERYONE for your encourapgemnet and tips!!!! I listened to everything and everyone and modified what I heard into a plan of attack that ACTUALLY WORKED!!!! I AM SLEEPING AGAIN!!! WE HAVE OUR BED BACK!!!!! Yaaaaaaay!!!!!!
It started of promising. I took him into his nursery at 8 pm, started the entire winding down... turned on his fishies, showed him his crib, set up the video monitor, gave him his bottle with the FP aquarium soothing in the background, put a little bear by his cheek... his eyes started closing... I out him in his crib "shhhushing" him the entire tie, put bear next to him, closed the door and walked out. Left Chris with the monitor to watch him and I ran downstairs to take a shower (so I wouldn't hear him). Within 1 minute he was up crying hysterically banging his hands on the crib, standing up, and then 2 minutes later he threw up everywhere. Chris ran in and got him. I feel awful. I know I was supposed to clean him up and change the sheets and put him back but I couldn't. We couldn't. He fell asleep with daddy in our bed. I feel awful. I feel terrible, I can't stop crying. I am sorry I tried. But now what?? NOW WHAT DO I TRY IF I CAN'T CIO??? I need sleep. I need my bed. But I don't know if I can do this again.

Aww Maria
Ava did the same thing but we just went in, cleaned her and room up and plopped her right back in her crib.
Believe it or not, they know that if they continue to throw up and you "rescue" them they'll continue to do it. Those sweet little faces are masters of manipulation
Its awful to go through but trust me, it does work. You can always FM me with questions - hugs

I completely agree with lorimarie. As I was telling you in your post earlier today, this is exactly what we did with DS. He had learned that if he got himself worked up to the point of throwing up that we would give in to him.
It was the hardest thing I have ever done... cleaning him up and putting him back in bed... but it was the best decision we ever made. Plus, he still loved us in the morning!

CIO is one of the hardest things I have done as a parent so far----but I know in my heart it was the only way my son was going to learn how to go to sleep on his own. If you are not ready to try again, that is alright, but if you want to, have a plan in place if he vomits again---I know for me it was so hard if DH wanted to cave and go in to him crying, it made me feel terrible and so much harder to let him cry. We are all here for you

Awww, poor baby (I mean you, not Athan - he's playing ya ). I'm so sorry Maria - this must be so hard. But keep reminding yourself, in the long run, you ALL will sleep better. Hang in there

Re: Night 1 of CIO - he threw up. I quit
Just wanted to give you hugs!
CIO isnt for every baby. It was never for me even though I know A LOT of people swear by it. I have a terrible sleeper. But he would SCREAM so brutally I knew I couldnt close the door on him and leave, plus he was very attached to me and used to nursing all night. So... this is what worked wonderfully for us... I always stayed in the room next to his crib to teach him to fall alseep alone. . . Its just another method. When he stands up I just lay him back down until he goes to sleep. At first I would pat his back or sing to him then as the days went by I would just stand there until he went off. It was comforting for him to know I was there. I did this in the middle of the night too. Its tiring and helps if you can switch off with dh. Now DS finally sleeps through the night! Good luck in whatever you chooose!

Ugh Maria...that s*cks!! Does he always throw up when he cries hard like that...or was this a first? Was he asleep when you put him down or just drowsy?

Rylan's Ped said the same thing to me. I know easier said than done but I was going to "try" it if it ever came to that.

I haven't been there yet but I can imagine how difficult it must be. CIO isn't for every mom and every baby. I have heard WONDERFUL things about the "No Cry Sleep Solution" Both my midwife practice and lactation consultant reccomend it.
It may be worth your while to read it and get other ideas!

Awwwww Maria.....
CIO is so very hard, but so very worth it in the end.
That beautiful face is going to do whatever he can to make sure that mommy or daddy comes back into his room to put him to sleep, but try not to cave.
Eventually he will learn to get himself to sleep, and i PROMISE you.... he will be all hugs and smiles the following morning. No resentment at all.

I agree 100%!!! Unfortunately if you want your bed back, you're going to have to stick with it and stay consistent.

Re: Night 1 of CIO - he threw up. I quit
Oh, Maria!!! I'm so sorry it went so badly.
I've never had Frankie throw up but I do know my SIL has with me nephew.
Just remember that you are not doing this to harm or hurt Athan. It really is the best for everyone in the long run.
My pediatrician said the same thing as all the other ladies here mentioned. He is "manipulating" you (not in that evil, bad, intentional sense) but in the sense that he knows what he wants and that if he screams and cries and makes himself throw up, you WILL come in and he will get what he wants.
and you definitelt need Chris' support if you are truly going to commit to CIO.
no one is saying you have to do this. but if you do decide to, you have to go all the way (cleaning him up and putting him back down).

Re: Night 1 of CIO - he threw up. I quit
Thanks ladies. Chris - who is "usually" the stick to your guns kind of guy - said it was horrible. I left and went downstairs so I didn't hear a single thing but he said at first for about 2 minutes he just cried non-stop, but it was just a cry - he (Chris) could have handled that. Then, he said it reached a level of hysteria very quickly to the point where Chris started panicking because we never heard Athan do that. And then he threw up.
Also, I think I probably screwed up because his FP Aquarium died on him too right when I left the room so he had nothing to distract himself with. If that darn thing was working "maybe" he would have played with it and distracted himself? I feel like I failed him because he was left alone, with nothing to play with or do, just hysterical.

Thanks Maria. I did read that book and to be honest with you, I didn't really get anything out of it. If we go into his room and he sees us - it's over. He gets worse. I should have started this MONTHS ago. I may have had a chance with that book if I did at around 6 months.

He never ever throws up. In 12 months, he has thrown up maybe 3 times (because he over ate ).
Our ped said the same thing. But he actually suggested we get a crib in our room and start moving the crib further and further from us and then eventually into his room and transition him that way.

Re: Night 1 of CIO - he threw up. I quit
just some hugs from a bad sleepers mom///
Iw ish I had advice. That would have been it for me too. Im a softie and would NOT have been able to put him back to CIO it out all over again after that, but I do realize some kids figure it out , I just cant believe mine would. I feel like he is genuinly upset( hence our STILL having issues... ) ...
Just have faith in yourself!
