Upgrading Electric
Can someone give me an idea of how much it costs to upgrade from 110 to 220?
Also...someone told me that when Central Air is put in they automatically upgrade the electric. is that true?
TIA!
UPDATE: I just read the engineer's report and noticed the house has 150A and 240V. I thought it was less. Do you guys think that's enough or does it pay to upgrade?

Upgrading 110 to 220 as you say is merely upgrading the voltage on a specific outlet or line.
If you are talking about upgrading your electric (in general) for central air, then you may need a service upgrade. Do you know how many amps you have currently in your house?
I had 100A in my house but I had to upgrade to 200A to get my central air installed. After they did the service upgrade, my electrician ran a line to the central air handler and that was a 220 circuit.
If you already have a 200A circuit (or maybe 150A) then you probably don't need your electric upgraded. Your electrician would just run a new line for the CAC air handler and outside compressor.

Re: Upgrading Electric
Also if you get a quote for Central Air, most likely they will quote you out a cost for a complete install. This typically includes running the electrical lines from the AC to your electric panel. But ask them this to make sure.
If you need a service upgrade, then that you would have to get done by an electrician. A service upgrade will run between 1500-2500. Your Central Air guy will be able to tell you if you need the service upgrade or not.

Re: Upgrading Electric
Thanks! I'm clueless to electricity. I think there is 100A in the house. So I would definitely need an upgrade.

Re: Upgrading Electric
We have 100 amp and are going to 200 amp next week. We are doing some other things as well such as new switches, outlets and etc...but the cost for everything is 3000. He didn't itemize the quote for us but when he is done I will let you know the precise cost.

Re: Upgrading Electric
my hubby's an electrician- he said it should cost roughly 3K to upgrade your service. He said you could upgrade to 150A from 100, but he'd usually recommend just going up to 200A.

Re: Upgrading Electric
we went from 60 to 200 in our house. I think the cost of the box and the install. was $1200 - i heard the box only costs electricians like $100 though, oh well!

Re: Upgrading Electric
I am not sure if this is what you are talking about, but when we redid our house 2 years ago we upgraded our panel. It was 3000 for the new service.

Re: Upgrading Electric
150A should be sufficient if you have breaker room on your panel.
Your CAC installer should be able to answer this question for you.

Re: Upgrading Electric
it depends on the size of the CAC unit whether you'd need to upgrade and whether you have enough breakers not being used in your panel......my DH said you might be able to get away with just upgrading your panel not the service itself.
