using frozen breastmilk- Added A Question-

hi everyone

i thawed out 2 bags of milk from june 1st- each bag has almost 4 ounces. i took them from the freezer and put them in the fridge yesterday.

how do i make a bottle?

do i warm up the bags first in a pot of warm water then transfer to a bottle

or do i dump the cold milk into a bottle and Then warm it up?

i know it sounds stupid, but i dont know if "breaking" that top layer of fatty milk is the wrong thing to do

Edited to add this: I went to give the baby his bottle and for some reason i opened it up to smell it, and it Stunk! i just dumped it- does anyone know why that couldve happened? am i going to have to dump out all the bags now? the bags were from june 1st and each had 4 ounces in them...

I microwave a bowl of water and then put the frozen bag of breastmilk in the bowl. Then I pour it into a regular bottle.

Re: using frozen breastmilk-

If you are using right away, you can thaw in warm water - that counts as your one "warm up".

If you are preparing in advance (like for daycare), thaw in cold water and prepare bottles, then they'll warm before giving it to the baby.

Also, NEVER shake the milk in order to break up the fat. It'll mix in when you warm it just fine.

Re: using frozen breastmilk-

I place the frozen bag into a cup of hot water in the sink and let the hot water continually run over it if I am in a rush. Then it is transfered into a bottle.

Re: using frozen breastmilk- Added A Question-

When you smelled it, had you already put it in the bottle, or were you smelling it in the bag? I dumped out a couple of bags in the past thinking they had gone bad, until I realized that the smell was actually the dried up milk that was along the seal of the bag, not the actual milk in the bag Chat Icon Chat Icon

no, it was in the bottle, after i warmed up the bags

first i took the bags of thawed milk (thawed in the fridge from the day before), and i warmed the bags of milk in a bowl of warm water, then i poured the milk from the bag into a bottle

stuck my nose in and i had to throw it out

:(

Re: using frozen breastmilk- Added A Question-

I've had that happen. It has something to do with the enzymes.... When you froze the milk, did you put it in the freezer while it was still warm or did you refrigerate it first? I found that chilling the BM first then freezing helped with that.
