My doctors give no more than 2 shots per visit. Four seems excessive to me...but I'm no doctor.

Re: Vaccination question...

I am no doctor either..but DS got his first set of shots last week and reacted from them. He had four shots, one being rotovirus ( which was optional) at around 10:30am. He slept most of the day and then around 5pm he got a fever of 103. and was distraught. For 24 hours I had to rock him just to soothe him...he was not himself until 48 hours later. As per my doctor this reaction was not common but normal. They said 1 in 10 newborns react with a fever. If I could do it all over again, i would not of done all 4 in one shot...i just think they are too little to handle it all.

My Ds received one shot (Hepatitis B ) at his newborn visit and one shot at his 5 week visit (Hepatitis B). Then at his two month visit he received 5 shots which were DTaP, Polio, Hib, Pneumococcus, & Rotavirus.

Re: Vaccination question...

It might seem excessive, but that's what is required. My dd has gotten 5 shots (3 injections) at once because that's the schedule.

Chelsea got the same thing at two months. She didn't have a reaction at all.

Not "required". Suggested. BIG difference.

I'm in the healthcare field and I can tell you firsthand that any doctor that says you HAVE to vaccinate your DC with 5+ vaccinations in one day is lying. You can absolutely break them up.

If your doctor doesn't "allow" that, time to find a new doctor.

not true.

As long as you get the shots, then you are ok. Daycare does not require that you get all 5 in one day. Breaking them up is an option that is completely up to parent.
But you must get the shots in a timely manner

Edited to say: I WISH i broke them up. I agree that 5 shots in one day is TOO MUCH. I will never do that again. Reaction or no reaction

Sure you could break them up and go back each week, but I don't know how much longer you could break it up and still stay on schedule for daycare/pre-school/school/camp.

Well i know i just wouldn't do 5 in one day again. I would have broken them up and got 2 or 3 in one visit.

I guess i am lucky that my daycare isn't that rigid. I know i have to get them in a timely manner but there is no official schedule

My DS has never gotten more than 2 shots at one time. He is still on "schedule" and actually my peds schedule doesn't give more then 2 shots.

That being said, I would not give my DS 5 shots at once....there is no harm in spreading them out a little bit. Talk to your ped about it Chat Icon

For Nurserey/Pre-k/Kindergarden they just need proof of having had the shots. That gives you until they are 4 years old, not 2 months old. As for day care - not every child is in day care at 2 months old. Yes some are - and if that is what the day care requires ok. But at 2 months old my DS was at home with me. We split the shots up. I will say at 5 months old DS started daycare 2 days a week and his daycare provider did not mandate that he needed every shot at one visit, just that he is getting them. Also just because it is 5 needles it does not mean that it is 5 shots. It is really 9. To me that is a LOT of medicine for such a small child. But to each his or her own. DS is nine months old and his shots were split up but he is still on schedule. It can be done.

Re: Vaccination question...

I did 5 vac's at out 1st visit. Hep B was given at the hospital. 4 injections at 1st visit and 1 oral. She slept a lot that day but had no other side effects.

My logic was I could put her through that pain/trauma 1 time or I could go back 2 and three times for those. 1 visit turns into 3 visits. It was bad enough 1 time.

My ped. would do anything i wanted. If you are having reservations split them up.

It's not 5 needles, it's 3 and it's 5 immunizations, not 9.

My DD started at 5 months also and I was obligated to provide proof of her shots being up to date. They actually keep track of it in the computer so as they are needed, you have to show proof. I can certainly understand the policy!

Are you sure it's 4 shots and not 4 vaccines? DD usually just gets 2 shots but it's a total of 4 vaccines.

This is true. The vaccinations that my DS has gotten has been with 3 needles and then one given orally.

Our daycare also keeps track of the of the shots and we did have to show proof. BUT there would be no issue if i went one day and got 2 and the next week got the remaining. I don't think any daycare would have a problem with this. And i think that is what most who consider breaking them up do. I don't think they do one shot per week. That, i see would be problematic for many reasons. It would actually throw one off the general shot schedule. But i still think there is some flexability with the daycares. I know for our 4 mos shots i couldn't get an appointment until he was 4 1/2!!!!! Chat Icon

Re: Vaccination question...

I don't want to hijack the thread but I want to explain where I got the (I meant to type 8 but hit 9 accidentally) 8 vaccines = 4 shots and one by mouth.

DTaP = 3 vaccines in 1 shot
HIB = 2 vaccines in 1 shot
Hep B = 1 vaccine in 1 shot
Polio = 1 vaccine in 1 shot
Roto = 1 vaccine by mouth

4 in one visit is too many. Please please please read " What Your Dr Won't Tell You ABout Vaccinations"by Stephanie Cave. Its not anti-vaccine, but it gives you a lot of good info. I think it should be required reading for any parent.

No, it's not 5 needles. It can be 3 -- if you go with combination shots. And, YES, that would be more then 5 vaccinations. The Pediarix in itself is 5 vaccinations in one:

Dtap (3 - Diptheria, Tetanus, Whooping Cough)
Hep B
Polio

Add to that the Hib and Prevnar. That's 7.

Still, IMO, way too many. I wouldn't let my own doctor stick me with 7 vaccinations in one day. No way would I do that to my 2mth old DS.
