VENT!!!!worst student teaching experience ever
someone i know is ST right now and is having the worst experience.
from day one that ST started he has been teaching every class. Which when you student teach you are suppoised to observe for a while then maybe teach a lesson here or there with the help of your cooperating teacher and then maybe towards the end teach a full week. but he has been having to plan ALL lessons, ALL homework AND make up ALL the exams and this is a HS regents class. He is so overwhelemed and his copperating teacher is NOT helping him, wont stay after with him, wont help him with the material and all she does is complain and tell him he stinks. She refuses to stay after class with him and hasnt ever stayed and she told an administrator that she stays after with him everyday.
she has already told him that he is a HORRIBLE teacher, that he is the laziest ST she has ever had (which is so unture because he is up to 4 am planning - and NOT getting paid) ,that he is always unprepared - he isnt but doesnt always have the full week planned on Monday because he doesnt know what he is doing and wants her help and she wont, she told him EVERYONE HATES HIM and that he shouldnt be a teacher. And he is there after ST till 5-530 everyday planning and she leaves at 2
he is workig his @ss off and he is at the point where he just doesnt want to teach anymore.
I dont know what to do for him.. its horrible to see this happeneing.
he has spoken to people already about her because he worked in the district before and although it seems that they understand and have told him that they dont really like her there is nothing they can do to make this better for him
What is wrong with people.. dont they remember what it was like?

Re: VENT!!!!worst student teaching experience ever
He should speak with his university supervisor. I never had a problem but our supervisor told us how he had to intervene several times for STs. Sorry he's having such a bad experience

Yeah, I would suggest that he speak with the supervisor of student teachers at his university. They should intervene at this point.

he definitely needs to speak up and get out of that situation quickly. without a good report from your CT, finding a job can be very tough (if not impossible), given all of the other candidates out there.

Re: VENT!!!!worst student teaching experience ever
he has spoken with his supervisor at his college several times she is aware of the situation and has spoken to the administrators and chairs and they spoke very highly of him. the way the schedules worked out he is pretty much stuck there plus he doesnt want to look bad by not trying to get through this since he worked int he district prior and they all know him and like him and have never had anything bad to say about him.
this woman just has it out for him for some reasons. Either she didnt want a ST and this is how she is dealing with that or she is just Mental!

Re: VENT!!!!worst student teaching experience ever
He should report what's going on to her AP or principal. She should get in trouble for doing this to him. She's not doing her job at all & it's not right.

Re: VENT!!!!worst student teaching experience ever
I know he's already spoken to HIS school and the CT's school, but I would raise hell until my assignment was changed.
He should go to his college (Head of the Dept.) go right to the top, and state his case (As professionally as possibly ).
A ST experience has to be as productive as possible for BOTH parties involved. It's NOT a chance for a CT to have a slave for a few weeks.
Actually when I was STing, a classmate in my seminar came in stressed beyond belief every week, close to tears, she had "chats" with our supervisor before and after class, she was overwhelmed, discouraged and just traumatized.
Well what teacher happened to be on my list for my next assignment? YEP, THAT teacher.
for the most part, Im a big believer in NOT changing things, and who knows, maybe I would have gotten along with her and loved her, but I really wasnt in the mood to take that chance and be a supergirl-student teacher for anyone. So I requested that my Supervisor take me out of that slot ASAP (this was about a week before the start).
My Supervisor was mortified herself at what the other student was going through, and was in COMPLETE agreement with me that she didnt want another student put in these circumstances. (esp because she knew the CT). It's one of those VERY strong-willed and strict and "powertrip" teachers, that everyone knows about but it's just "Acceptable" this poor girl stuck it through, but was beside herself every single day. (things that were said, done and expected of her, situations/discipline of the students that she didnt agree with or had ever seen before, situations she was put into. It was just terrible.
So I wasnt in the frame of mind to possibly ruin my own student teaching experience.
Your friend needs to speak up for himself NOW.
sorry he's going through this.
and if he DID get a job, if the AP is doing nothing for him now, imagine how supportive they are to their own staff... they should be welcoming and supportive to potential future teachers.

that is such a good point!!
thank so much for that - i will def let him know. It just stinks to be in that position because you know the politics in schools and you go to the wrong person and all helll breaks out. His superviosor is doiing what she can but its him because he doesnt want to seem like a baby about it and that he isnt doing his work - so he keeps saying he will do his best to get along with her and etc.. but you are right and i keep telling him he needs a new placement.
luckily its 4 more weeks of helll and then he will be in a better placement that he is looking foward to. but he 4 weeks are going to stink big time since he is doing all the work and might as well just get paid to be a teacher there

I would ABSOLUTELY NOTTT return to that assignment if I were him. It's NOT a productive environment, she is condescending towards him, personally offending him (telling him students hate him ???) OMGGG I'd have a 3 page letter and I would be at my Supervisor's office first thing in the morning.
Im sure he's paying a pretty penny to get his degree. Is THIS what he's paying for ?? The ball is on both sides of the court. If they offered him a job tomorrow, would he want to work there ? (I dont think I would based on this alone).
and for those that are thinknig "there are NO jobs, he's lucky to get a job". While I KNOW that fact, and it does have truth to it, I will NOT work in that type of environment. Id rather wait it out and wait for the right opportunity to come by. No one should be treated that way. It's completely unacceptable.
Four weeks is four weeks too long for this to go on.
I hope he puts his foot down.
He will be treated the way he allows himself to be treated. and this should NOT be allowed. by him or anyone else.
and the admins that are doing nothing about it should be ashamed of themselves.
disclaimer: (and I know my personality comes across as very strongwilled ) but im just as strongwilled when Im working in a productive environment and for the right people. When I was subbing more consistently, my name came up at a meeting for a leave replacement, while there were about 5-10 others MUCH more available than me (had no children, etc.) and they subbed 5 days, while I subbed maybe 2 days per week. and I wasnt ready to take anything on f/t at the time.(but I was flattered to hear this ) just putting this disclaimer out there because I know everyone will say "be nice so everyone loves you". Im very well respected and I respect everyone around me at all times. but when someone crosses the line like this, I will not tolerate it. this is just insane.
my college was more concerned with our experiences being productive than the political bs involved in pulling a student from an assignment.

Re: VENT!!!!worst student teaching experience ever
I have a student teacher right now. I must tell you things started off VERY rocky and have only gotten better since Monday. The teacher is wrong. The chairperson or grade level supervisor should be observing him soon no?? He should be setting up a meeting to see this person. When he has this meeting, I would make it a point of saying to the supervisor that you have some concerns and say: She is not staying after to help me, she does not offer constructed criticism. She is having me teach all day and not modeling any lessons for me. I feel that I need more guidance than I am getting and I was hoping that you could come it at such and such a time see if you can help us sit down and work through the lessons.
If this woman is that bad I am sure that the chairperson is aware of it and will offer to help. If they really want him in the district believe me they will go out of the way to help him even if it's behind the scenes. But I can also tell you from experience, that schools are the same whether you are the child or the teacher. Someone is always getting picked on and bullied and a student teacher is the weaker person so he is a prime subject for a bully. Sad but true.
I wish him a lot of luck.
Also one other thought. Is he keeping a log??? Are there a certain amount of hours that he has to complete If he is teaching all day then he may have enough instructional hours to qualify and be done with that placement already. He should ask his field supervisor.
Good luck to him

Re: VENT!!!!worst student teaching experience ever
While I agree that this is totally unacceptable, if he did complain about her, couldn't that hurt his chances of getting a job in the future? That would be my main concern... Is it possible to be switched to another teacher?

oh that is such a good point! i will ask him about that.. but im sure on top of that he has to be observed a certain amount of times
but who knows because the CT told him she wants to fail him in ST so it may not count anyway

Re: VENT!!!!worst student teaching experience ever
I had a very similar situation. I was so wiped after the ST experience. Then again, I got fantastic references from these teachers. If I were him, I'd ask to switch cooperating teachers or simply stand up to the teacher. Sounds like the teacher doesn't think highly of him anyway. So why should he bust his hump if there is no thanks in the end.

Re: VENT!!!!worst student teaching experience ever
When I student taught, the class was all mine from day one. There was no observing the teacher first and then teaching. It was this is your class, sink or swim. Of course, my cooperating teacher was great and gave me advice, helped me with lessons, critiqued me, etc.

Re: VENT!!!!worst student teaching experience ever
I'm so sorry to hear this. It brings back bad memories of my own ST experience. She wasn't mean to me, but she did throw me into all 5 classes (including honors, which her OWN daughter was in and AP!!! wth?) She didn't help me planning and I had no idea what I was doing. I saw her the first 2 minutes in the morning and then she was gone - I even had to do her freaking duty! The most ironic part was that she was "Teacher of the Year"
I was 21 and didn't know any better (I thought it was normal), but I barely got anything out of it and decided not to go into teaching when I graduated (It took me a year to find my 'mojo' again and get into teaching).
I think what your friend needs to do is make sure he secures recommendations from other people, in the school would be best, before he rocks the boat.

Re: VENT!!!!worst student teaching experience ever
Everyone here is giving great advice. One question~ does the supervising teacher receive college or grad school credits for their participation in the program? I know my lead teacher got 3 credits from QC for working with me. If your friend's lead teacher is recvg this kind of compensation I would I also talk with the University's ST supervisor about that b/c she is basically stealing $$$ from the University if she is not fulfilling her end of the contract!

GREAT POINT! I was thinking of this also. MOSt of them DO get credits (which they sell for very good money!).
hmm seems like a win-win for this teacher.
