if you have a qualilty TV and a clean computer you will see a major difference. The picture Quality much better.
Cablevision DL speed was around 6 Mbps, I now have FIOS and When I run the same Speedtest it is 21Mbps
We have a brand new LCD and 2 pretty new computers. Still don't see a major difference.

I have had it for a year. Here are my thoughts: it took over 2 weeks to get it all hooked up correctly. Each time a new person came to fix it in the beginning they would tell me how wrong it was initially hooked up, they would re-do it and then the same would happen again. Lets just say it took a while to get it to work seemlessly.
The past 3 weeks I have lost dial-tone 7 times for over a day. I have been on the phone with verizon fios over 15 times. Apparently the network and fiber wires are very touchy. Yesterday I demanded to be hooked back up to copper because I can not loose anymore time sitting home without a dial tone waiting for these men to show up. Oh yeah and everytime someone shows up they tell me a different story. I am very annoyed right now.
So my thoughts are if you like to wait home for the verizon guy and like not to have a dialtone... go for it.
The internet seems to be fine, I don't see how it is faster though.
eta: It took them 9 hours to install it originally!! Then it took 3-4 hours each time for repairs!! Not to mention the 3 days of waiting home 8-6 with no one showing up!!
Sounds like my life story in the winter with Petro and our original boiler!
Thanks for all the opinions. I'm skeptical about it crapping out since I need access to work from home a lot.
I would say this is not typical, I have had no problems and have had the service for almost a year.........

I have it, and I honestly do not see such a big difference from Time Warner. And I don't think my internet is any faster.
Same here ... I don't see any difference between FiOS and Cablevision (and I'm a VZ employee).

I have no idea what the numbers mean but my download was 1058 kb/s and 1826 upload.

It may not be typical, but I have also had this service for just over a year prior with no major problems except for install. I think the problem is that in my area they are expanding more blocks and bam, the network can no longer hold my line (at least this is what I was told.) I am just so upset that the problem is not being fixed and how I have lost dial tone so many times. I think it is important for everyone to know that the customer service for fixing a problem is terrible. I have also talked to a couple of people in my local area and many have been complaining of the same thing.

I hope that is cablevision, because that is 1Mbps, if not, you have DSL not FIOS. and your DL should always be higher than your UL

Re: Verizon FIOS
OMG they are STALKING us. The first night he rang our bell to sell it to us at 8:45 pm...a little late...but we listened to what he had to say, said MAYBE and he said he'd be in touch the next day... Yesterday, or shall I say last night...late again, he rang the bell, this time when I was trying to put DD to bed. We didn't answer and then 5 minutes later...doorbell rings again and he's knocking at the same time. This time we were eating dinner and didn't answer because we were annoyed. Then 10 minutes later, DD is up now crying and he rings the bell AGAIN so I had to walk right past him to go upstairs to her and I didn't care I was so annoyed. I hate hate hate pushy salesman. We were given the option to decide, and didn't have to decide by yesterday so we were really annoyed and didn't feel like answering because we we so annoyed. Then he called and left a message saying he must have missed us and will call again today and will come by again today. What a turn off!!

Re: Verizon FIOS
Just wanted to add I am currently waiting home for the second day in a row, to having no one show up. They promiced up and down thursday by 6pm it would be solved, then yesterday by 6pm, now today by 12 pm and it is 11:41. It would be such a big deal if I were able to get cell service in my house but I don't. This is soo frustrated that there service is sooo terrible.

Re: Verizon FIOS
FIOS is available in my area, but honestly...I have absolutely no problems with Cablevision, so I'm in no hurry to switch. When my "year" comes up, I'll discuss $$ with them, if they can't do anything then maybe I'll consider FIOS, but until then...

Ahhh, yes...since the FIOS guy was here with us for five and a half hours this morning, he should be getting to you any minute.
However, I've now been wirelessly connected to the internets for 27 consecutive minutes -- a new FIOS record for me -- so he may have done something right!

Re: Verizon FIOS
five and a half hours is nothing. DH got stuck at one house for 10 hours. Yes 10 hours. Their were conectivity problems and he couldnt leave until the problem got solved, then had to do new client education.
Then after he gets home and is rested he got a phone call on his work phone from the client that their was a problem with the television.
So he has to go back the next day. The problem, the lady hit the wrong button on the remote and had it set on aux
Depending on what you are getting the install takes a long time. A standard triple play is minimum 7 hours.
But once it's up and running it's awesome.

Re: Verizon FIOS
Wow, I must have gotten very lucky. We got Fios recently, and have absolutely no regrets or complaints (I'm a computer guy, so I am very picky about computer stuff).
The tech came at around 8:30 for an estimated 8-12 arrival time. The only reason it took him 5 hours is because the other crew didn't run the wires beforehand, so he had to sit around a wait for another truck to run the wires from the street to the house. Otherwise, he would have been done in about 2-3 hours. Wireless router works great, no dropped connections, not loss of speed, absolutely no negatives so far.
Our speed is just amazing. We have the 5mbit connection, but we are getting at or above the 10mbit speed for many sites.
Phone connection is much clearer than before, with no problems. We have DishNetwork, so we currently aren't doing the TV through Fios, but at some point we may think about switching.

I've had just about enough. I'm back to losing the wireless connection every 10 minutes or so.
Just say NO to FIOS!

Re: Verizon FIOS
I think it's a trade off. I think there will be technical and customer service issues with both.
I say, if it ain't broke don't fix it.
I'm staying with Cablevision until they screw it up.
I have threatened the Fios thing and they gave me some discounts and some free stuff.

Re: Verizon FIOS
As of a couple weeks ago Fios had the most HD Channels now Cablevision has 40 or so. So of you like your HD Cablevision is the best right now.

Re: Verizon FIOS
In order to remain competitive the number of HD channels will remain about the same for both services. Right now Optimum is ahead, but it will probably be short lived.
Standard programming should not be a factor for most. Once you a HD TV why would you watch regular TV. I find it almost impossible. The fact that FIOS has more HBO channels with their HBO package is irrelevant since only one of those channels is on HD.
For the man of the house, Cablevision has the Golf channel in HD; FIOS has the NFL network in HD. This could be a consideration to take into account.
If there is a black out (like in 2002-3?) your FIOS (land line) phone will work. Just make sure you have at least one old fashion phone that plugs into the phone line and not only a cordless, because then you're SOL. Your cablevision phone will NOT work.
Here is the most important part. If you download pictures to services like Kodak, Photo Bucket, Shutterfly, etc. You will love FIOS and should hate Cablevision.
FIOS does not place any restrictions on speed or amount of data that you can upload or download onto these services. Cablevision will put a collar on you download/upload speed and it will take you hours to download you pictures onto these services if you've been flagged. You are usually flagged if you do your downloading during the prime time evening hours. I had to call Cablevision one time and asked them to remove the collar. They did and warned me that if the activity continued they would do this to me again.
I don't have to worry anymore since I'm a FIOS customer now.
Although FIOS is much faster than Cablevision, you need to keep in mind that you can only upload and download as fast as the network you're connecting to/with. If your friend on the other side has dial up, you will only be able to move as fast as they can go.
If you're switching from Cablevision to FIOS you're also going to need to get used to the new remote control. That is a PITA. I still like the functionality of the cablevision remote better.
The DVR on each of these services are very different to operate and I'm still not used to the FIOS remote or features, it's been 2 weeks. I still think that the Cablevision DVR is more user friendly, but the FIOS has one cool feature. If you are watching a recorded program and decide to stop, say, to go to bed, it will remember where you stopped and you can pick it up from the same place when you decide to continue in the future.
Lastly, if you download video you need to get FIOS period. I will not even get into this.
If you simply watch regular TV, come to LIFamilies, and check your email, just get dial up and save your money.
