It sounds to me like the groom was supposed to tell his friends the situation and he dropped the ball.

I would wait until I know the whole story before making any decisions about the friendship. It very well could be because their plans had to change due to circumstances beyond their control.
That being said, the situation should have been explained to you before now. But since it is DH's friend, the groom may have dropped the ball on this.
