Re: We get the Point.....
Posted by SweetTooth
I was thinking about this thread and all the posts that were written. I am not sure where the original debate even stemmed from. I think it was a post a week or two ago where someone had received a puppy as a gift. If I remember correctly, everyone gave a congrats, and a few people (maybe only 1?) posted anything about pet stores or puppy mills. Since then there have been other posts by people defending their choice of puppy store dogs. On those posts, more education was presented. Then some people posted just about the atrocities of puppy mills. There were maybe 3 threads in the past two weeks. I don't understand what the problem is. I don't think the issue is being beaten upon anyone's heads. Its not like everytime someone asks about their puppy the responses are "well, did you get your dog from a pet store, because if you did I will not answer you and you are an evil person." If this was the case, I could understand some of the animosity that is going on here. But no one ever does this. When ANYONE has a question about their pet, everyone on here is helpful and supportive. If someone asks about getting a dog, many will beg that person not to buy from a pet store and might give some info on puppy mills. Where is the problem here?
Well said ... again... because you were well spoken on your other response, too!!

I'm adding my .02 as a lurker and very few but sometime poster...
Would it be possible to email Ron and Co. to see if they could a pin a thread to the top of the board that says something to the effect of: "If you are thinking about getting a dog, please read this first" This post could have all the necessary information regarding puppy mills on it plus other helpful info about breeders and anything else you could think of.
Maybe that could be an option? There have been a few threads of this nature that we have suggested be pinned. I am not sure why it hasn't happened .
In addition to the PM info, there was also a huge thread (I think Jes posted) about how to find a reputable breeder & make sure you are not supporting a BYB. I think all of these would fit well into one general thread with the above-mentioned title. ETA: recently there have also been issues about how to train a puppy, how to find a good vet, and total costs of bringing a dog into your home. I think it would be great to put it all in one place.
Sorry! I didn't realize the idea of pinning informational threads has already come up. Here I thought I was being so smart! My apologies for being redundant.
At any rate, please let me know how I go about FMing Ron about pinning informational threads here and I will send him an FM.
From a newbie/outsiders perspective, I feel this is such a great board with a vast wealth of information. It's a shame to see people arguing so much. Especially over information that does need to get out there. I think you all agree to that much. People should know about PMs and BYBs...
As someone who is looking for as much information as possible to better educate myself and husband before we get our dog, I think it's a shame that threads like this take up more time and space than those with vital information like where to find good breeders and vets or about training your new pup as well as TONS of other VALUABLE INFORMATION... including information on PMs and BYB.
Can't we find a solution to this problem, rather than just making it a pizzing match? No one's going to conceed their side, so maybe it's just best to agree that you both disagree?
Do both sides agree that pinning informational threads at the top of the board is the best solution? Then maybe start an informational thread or two or bump those that are in existance already.
Come on guys, we're all on the same side here... Lets get together and come up with a solution, rather than be divided and fighting!

I totally agree. I think we really should have a thread or two pinned on top with the topic "Information for those thinking of a adopting a dog" and in that thread can be links from AKC such as the ones I posted in JennZs new thread titled "question for you all", as well as info about pet/puppy stores and mills.

Jennie, I totally agree with you except for the few points you made about EVERYONE agreeing that pet stores/PM are bad. It seems no matter what is posted or said, there are still some who say they have bought from a pet store, defend it, and say they will do it again.

Yes, exactly. And THAT is the reason why many poster still try to "make their point" and get the message across, yet only get bashed for it.

*I just think that you should pick and choose your battles here ladies. If someone has already purchased a dog from a pet store, than there is NO reason to go on and on about how pm's are bad, cruel, etc. It only makes that person feel like cr*p and turns them off of this board because they feel like they're being attacked when they only wanted to share their joy. If you want to educate them, then send them a FM. Isn't that what everyone says... if you have an issue, send a FM? But when numerous people respond about how bad pm's are and how naive they're being, well you're not educating anyone because you'll be too busy leaving a bad taste in their mouth for them to listen.
Educating someone before they get a puppy or when they ask where to get a new puppy is fine. But if they've already got one, it just is making that person feel really small and we're not here to do that to others, are we?
Look, i am a huge animal lover and i hate PM's as much as the next person. It is a horrible horrible thing. No one is denying that. But listen to your fellow posters when they're trying to tell you that there is a point of too much and that sometimes, enough is enough. And i mean truly listen because it doesn't seem like you're doing too much of that. You just come off defensive every time.
That's all i'm saying.
THANK YOU......I know you ladies are educating everyone....and yes Shanti I do believe in a lot of education as a teacher, but like justhappy said you ladies come off VERY DEFENSIVE in my opinion
I guess we'll have to agree to disagree because I see it entirely the other way around. I find the nature of this post defensive in and of itself.

I have to disagree. If someone feels guilty about purchasing a dog from a pet store, that comes from within.
Prior to my being educated on the topic, my DH and I purchased a puppy from a pet store. Had my sister and coworker not shared their education about puppymills upon my telling them we bought a puppy, I still might not know. As has been stated by numerous people before me...The one that doesn't learn from history, is bound to repeat it ...
There is nothing wrong with sharing facts with someone after the fact. That is how we learn and grow. Nothing about being told facts after purchasing a puppy should make a person feel small. I would think that it would make that person angry for not being given full disclosure and sold an inferior product/puppy.
I think the way that most of the posters go about sharing their information about puppymills is very considerate of others. And as I have said previously, if just ONE person walks away from a thread discussing puppymills and doesn't buy a puppy - that saves one litter from being born.
Very well said

Im sorry, but I have to say this. I know understand that you are all trying to educate us with Pet Stores and Puppy Mills, but we got the hint after the first and maye second thread, but enough is enough...we get the point. You ladies dont have to keep drilling this thread. I enjoy coming to the Pet Thread, but now I dont because of all these posts about pet stores. I LOVE animals and love my pets and yes, I bought Tiger from a Pet store, not knowing the background of Pet stores and mills, which is why I will never buy one from there again. I dont care if you write something negative to me or flame me...., but we get the HINT!!!!!
I agree. I get that people need education, and I appreciate it, but sometimes it's all most like if you don't agree then you risk being bombared. I like the education, but I come on here to talk about Daisy and Gus as well as see other peoples dogs, cats, and so forth. I think that there are times that people try to educate to muc. Wome times people just want advice, but not a disertation on whatever.

Re: We get the Point.....
I understand about puppy mills and trying to get everyone educated about it, but what happens to the dogs at the stores that aren't adopted??? An honest question??? I'm not trying to jump down anyone's throat.
My Boston Terrior was from a store. One of the reasons why I got him was that NO ONE wanted him. My heart was breaking and he kept going on discount. I was so nervous that they would distroy him, that I got him. He is the best dog!!! I might just be one of the lucky ones. But I have legit papers on him, so I"m not sure if he did come from a puppy mill.

I think they go on discount until they are sold. Which saddens me b/c God only knows who will buy them....
I am glad you gave your doggie a home and that he is wonderful. It is such a catch 22. We don't want doggies to be homeless or sad, but we also want to stop puppy mills. Such a tough situation.

Re: We get the Point.....
as long as there are people who come on here starting a thread about their mew puppy bought from a shop, there will be Puppymill threads.
i understand how it can get anoying to people and feel forced down their throats, that is why i stopped posting about it... and mainly why i never visit the pet board anymre.... it seems like everytime i pop on i see some poster bought from a shop and it a)breaks my heart and b)is very hard for me to bite my tongue
yes, it comes up alot but if you are already educated in the PM dept then why not just skip that thread or reply? creating a thread about it just keeps the topic alive

Re: We get the Point.....
I agree with the original post. I am sure everyone knows about puppy mills. I do and always have..but I STILL purchased my dog at a pet store. I fell in love with my dog when I met him and was not going to let where he may have come from change my mind about wanting him as a pet. The truth is these dogs need homes too ! It is my opinion that when you try to forget about these dogs at pet stores in hopes that puppy mills will be shut down, you are stooping down to the same level. Think about the fact that you are denying all of these animals a loving home just bc of others actions. Its not the dog's fault.
How about being realistic in the fact that there will never be an end to puppy mills as sad as that is. Its a money making business that will never end. Instead, give these animals a chance at the life they never got from the beginning. I love my dog and would never trade him for the world....I have a puggle which I know is a big no no among puppy mill preachers bc he is just a "MUTT". I say MUTTS need love too !! & so do all pups that unfortunaly come from puppy mills
Please also know that my dog almost died as a result of being sick when I purchased him so if anyone should be turned off and preaching it should be me...However, I guess I look at the glass half full and know that I saved my dog's life....If I would have not purchased him the store would not have paid the money to nurse him back to health-I would never be able to live with myself just like it breaks my heart to think of all the people who take this issue out on the poor puppies and tell people not to give them a home....Everything is meant to happen for a reason and if that means that you fall in love with a dog from a pet store then so be it !
Don't misunderstand me for agreeing with what goes on RE Puppy Mills...I am full aware and I think it is horrible but like I said earlier, these dogs need love too !

Like I said, these dogs need love & homes too and if I happen to be in a pet store and fall in love with a puppy, I am not going to let something get in the way of not giving that living creature a home !!!!
It's not the dog's fault !!!
JMO - I will choose not to go back and forth with this though :)
However, I am not looking for another dog at this time and I wouldn't be going to a pet store to seek a pet out...when I purchased my dog I had no plans of having a pet....it just happened despite the knowledge I had...I feel he was meant to be my dog..pet store or not.

I'm not looking to go back and forth with you either. But just so you know, those dogs DO go to homes if they are not sold. Either they are marked WAY down or they are homed with employees, and finally shelters.
PLEASE~ if you can't control your urge, then stay out of the pet stores. I am really disheartened that besides being an impulse buyer, you also KNEW the background of pet store puppies and still chose to support the puppy mills.

I wasn't supporting the puppy mills, I was giving a puppy a loving home in my eyes....and in my dog's case.. No, he wouldn't have gone to a worker bc he would have died if I didn't make an "impulse" buy as you call it. You can't put everyones reasons or situation for purchasing a puppy from a pet store into one uniform cookie cutter category of supporting puppy mills. I didn't walk into the store and say HELL YEA I am all for puppy mills lets buy me a puppy !
I feel I did something good by saving my dog's life...I'm sorry you don't see it that way. Maybe my picture should be put on the window of every pet store saying - Don't let her in !

Look~ you said knew going in that by buying a pet store puppy that you were continuing the vicious cycle. I don't doubt that you love your dog, however, you DID freely support puppy mills by buying your dog at a pet store (again, because you KNEW where your dog likely came from). And apparently you STILL feel it's OK to do it again- even after all the problems you had with your sick dog.
As for your pic in the window~ we know THAT won't happen- YOU, my friend are the perfect mark that the pet stores are looking for: an impulse buyer who cares only about satisfying her immediate need.
I'm very glad your puppy has a loving home- I wonder how her poor mother is doing......
