I wasn't supporting the puppy mills, I was giving a puppy a loving home in my eyes....and in my dog's case.. No, he wouldn't have gone to a worker bc he would have died if I didn't make an "impulse" buy as you call it. You can't put everyones reasons or situation for purchasing a puppy from a pet store into one uniform cookie cutter category of supporting puppy mills. I didn't walk into the store and say HELL YEA I am all for puppy mills lets buy me a puppy !

I feel I did something good by saving my dog's life...I'm sorry you don't see it that way. Maybe my picture should be put on the window of every pet store saying - Don't let her in !

Every puppy purchased from a puppy store means ONE MORE litter is bred from a puppymill dog.

You are supporting the puppymill industry by purchasing a dog based on pure economics...If the demand is there, the supply will be filled. As soon as demand decreases, the supply slows down. For example, if people stopped buying puppies from Puppy Depot in Coram, eventually the store would close because it isn't turning a profit. It's simple economics. Would you purchase products that were knowingly produced by children in sweat shops just because the children still needed the money? It's the same thing with different players.

I understand the thought process of the puppies need homes but they will get homes even if we don't buy them. Our shelters are filled with puppies and dogs that no one wants or buys. 2 million dogs are euthenized every year in the US because they need homes too and don't get them. I understand adoption is not for everyone but your logic behind buying from a pet store is misconstrued and I would encourage you to become more educated on the business behind puppymills and pet stores before you claim not to support them yet willingly continue to purchase from them.

This is ABSOLUTELY correct.

I know this sounds really harsh, but sometimes a sacrifice of one is needed for the greater good. Perhaps your puppy WOULD have died had you not bought it, but because you bought it, another whole litter was created to replace that purchased puppy (because a mother dog doesn't just have ONE puppy) so now there are 3 - 8 more puppies. Maybe they all died. Maybe the Mother dog died, we'll never know the fate. Had you not bought that one puppy perhaps that litter wouldn't be born.

Often in my work with feral cats we need to make a decision that may mean a kitten dies, but it's to save the lives of future kittens not being born. I'll give you an example. I was trying to trap a Momma cat and her 4 kittens. The momma and 2 of the kittens were in the open trap. If I had closed it, I would have gotten the 2 kittens (who I can easily find homes for) and the momma, who I then would have gotten fixed, but the 2 kittens that didn't go in the trap may have died without their mother. I did not close the trap, I didn't want to knowingly put those 2 kittens at risk. I continued to try to trap them. Before I was able to trap them, the momma cat got pregnant with another litter and 3 of those kittens died anyway. Had I closed the trap that day, I could have saved 2 kittens and gotten the mom fixed, instead 3 kittens died and the momma cat had another whole litter. Next time I may make that decision to sacrifice those 2 kittens in order to save the others.

The point is, there is a greater good here, you think you 'saved' your dog, and perhaps you did, but in buying it you created another whole litter of puppies who may not be so lucky.

I am not trying to take anything away from your loving your dog, I just wanted you to think about the consequences. It’s just about education. You would still have an amazing dog had you done the research and purchased it from a reputable breeder.

not only do stores keep replacing the liters, but more dogs on the streets and in shelters are dying when you could be SAVING a life rather than BUYING a life. wouldn't you feel alot better knowing you are actually making a difference in a dog's life and in the world?
