Wedding horror stories?

DH is at the oos wedding of a good friend of his. The wedding is, quite literally, in the middle of nowhere. None of the guys brought their wives/gfs. Without going into detail there's no open bar and the cocktail hour food was chex mix.

Yes, NY/NJ weddings are over the top, but they're pretty awesome. This got me thinking.....what's the worst wedding you've ever been to?

Re: Wedding horror stories?

The wedding was at the four seasons, but the caterer was not from the hotel. The caterer is no longer welcome to provide food at any four seasons property because the food was that bad.

Wedding horror stories?

We went to an OOS wedding in Nashville when I was about 22 with my boyfriend and I did not know that other parts of the country did not do weddings like NY. I was WAY overdressed and there was no food. Punch and a wedding cake and no music except the radio.

Another wedding many many years ago, the DJ was so bad that our table resorted to singing theme songs to TV shows to entertain ourselves.

Re: Wedding horror stories?

My BIL first wedding was at the smaller venue at Botanical Gardens with a very well known caterer (easy to look up if you're interested). The food was meh at best. We actually all went to McDonalds on the way home, we were starving! They clearly allowed too many people in the venue because the tables were on top of each other- difficult to move your chair to get up and dance or go to the bathroom. They had ten zillion glasses and favors and decorations on the table itself, which made it difficult to eat. They could have easily removed any unused glasses to make some space, but they didn't. And the worst part was, because the room was so small, the bar was outdoors in the parking lot. It was literally folding tables right next to the valet parking. For what they paid, it was a total rip off.

Wedding horror stories?

Tied- both Long Island weddings. The latest one had NO TABLES OR CHAIRS!!!!! Cocktail hour was cheese. There was a buffet, but so much of the food required a fork and knife (which you can't use if you have nowhere to sit or put your plate down!). I was also due with DS2 3 days after the wedding. I was so mad all night. And they closed the buffet really soon after it opened- I was starving. The second one was in Hempstead at a moose lodge kinda thing. It smelled like pee, we had plastic utensils, and we were asked to keep our plastic cups for the night since they only had enough for everyone to have 1. The food was good (all homemade), but there were barely any drinks and the thing that annoyed me the most was that DH (who was my fiancé at the time) was listed as "and guest" on my seating card. The invitation was sent to both of us- they knew his name. We'd basically been engaged longer than the couple had been together! I thought that was disrespectful. Both weddings were tacky.

Florida- it was a buffet that we ate with the general public. So we were in our dresses/suits getting food and there were people in t-shirts/shorts and flip flops eating the same food. We still laugh about it today!

I went to a wedding in a literal swamp.

The ground where the chairs were for the ceremony was water logged, so it moved under your feet.

The bathroom was a port-a-potty, the mother of the groom changed into cut off shorts and a wife beater 2 minutes into the reception and the bride had spiders crawling through the tulle of her wedding gown. The MOH had dead bugs all along the bare of her back, because we were in a hot swampy area.

Horrible.

My cousin's wedding was in PA. It was a beautiful venue but extremely hot (outdoor wedding) and the food was awful. The lasagna had cottage cheese and salsa as the sauce and cheese.

Wedding horror stories?

At a wedding I went to last year, a waiter dropped a tray filled with plates of pasta on the floor and the bride got sauce all over her dress. Once that happened, other waiters started dropping things left and right. But the wedding itself was one of the best I've ever been to despite that happening.

I've only been to one wedding OOS and it was just very different. Not bad, just not what I'm used to. Cocktail hour was a couple of passed shrimp skewers and crackers with a rondele cheese dip and some sliced cheese. Dinner was various buffet stations of really bad food in each corner of the room. To get anything to drink, you had to go outside. The B&G played some games on the dance floor. There were guests in formal wear and guests in jeans and flip flops. One man even wore suit pants and a white undershirt. We had fun but it was so very different than anything I ever experienced in NY.

ETA: The OOS wedding ceremony was on a public beach. They had it all set up for the wedding and the rest of the beach was virtually empty until a man placed his stuff right between the area clearly designated for the wedding and the ocean. He was asked very nicely if he could move over about 15 feet so he wouldn't be in pictures and he threw a fit. Meanwhile there was so much beach available to him to go anywhere. And then when the bridal party started walking from the parking lot down the "aisle", a snake fell out of a tree right in front of them.

Re: Wedding horror stories?

LI wedding at a well known Knights.
No alcohol at tbe wedding, not a big deal because we started a tab at the bar, just had to leave the reception room to get a drink. Cocktail hour food was chips, crackers some cheese, and what I believe was chicken nuggets on a stick. Dinner was buffet, and included beef stew, some chicken dish and a tray of mixed vegetables.
The bride and groom were MIA for most of the reception. Most of us were very overdressed, we could have worn jeans and sneakers and fit right in with the rest of tbe guests. We left early and a group of us went to the diner to eat.
Lesson learned - do not seal the envelope beforehand.
Marriage lasted under a year.

Another wedding, invited a guests of the father of the groom. Nice wedding and reception. Never got a TY card because the marriage lasted less than three months.

Another big wedding, his third, her second and it was BLACK TIE. Started 45 minutes lat, the bridal party waas huge and then the bride walks in. TaTas spilling out of a lingerie top sheer dress, long veil, mile high glitter hooker heels. At tbe reception I kept looking for the stripper pole in the corner. We left at 12:30 am and the cake had not been cut yet. Never got a TY card from this wedding either.

Pennsylvania wedding where the YMCA was performed in full on costume by the bridal party and the 45 year old shirtless MC was grinding on a 70 yr old guest whilst she shouted "what happens in gettysburg stays in Gettysburg!"

Re: Wedding horror stories?

My friend went to a wedding where the brides uncle had a heart attack on the dance floor and died. That was pretty bad. This summer we went to a wedding for one of dh friends. It was on a golf course. First, after sitting in the hot sun for the ceremony, the cocktail no hour was outside and the line for the bar was 15-20 mins long. Then, by the time we got to cocktail hour there were no forks and dh and I had to share one. Then, there are two tents set up. One big one with ac and closed. And one open one and no ac. Separated by a dance floor. The bride and groom and all the family were in the one with the ac and the rest of us were getting eaten alive by the bugs in the other. It was so weird. And a guest(a friend of the bride) took her heels off to be more comfie and the bride told her that she needs to put them back on.

Re: Wedding horror stories?

I don't like Australian style weddings.

You don't get to pick what you want to eat usually. They just put the plates down. Sometimes there is a center of the table plate that you all share, but then you need to watch out for people who eat it all.

Then there are the freakin' speeches. This can go on for 1 hour +. One wedding it was 2 freakin' hours.

If your SO is in the bridal party, then you don't get to sit with them. They usually use a dais. I don't like those, TBH.

At least the alcohol is included.

Wedding horror stories?

DH and I went to his friends wedding in Chicago. We both got really sick from the food the next morning and had to fly home. It wasn't a fun flight.

Went to a backyard wedding on LI. DH was the best man - both he and the groom wore the kind of t-shirts with the tux picture on them - ok, it's casual and that's what you want to do - fine. But they ran out of food before everyone got to eat, the only alcohol was really bad wine and worst of all - the bathroom - In the house where all the food was made- was FILTHY and there was no soap to even wash your hands. Completely skeeved me out and after seeing that I was glad I didn't eat.

Also went to a very nice OOS wedding but the bride was such an attention whore that at the beginning of the reception, where they usually introduce the couple as "Mr and Mrs---" for the first time, she had them just announce her and she walked in alone LOL! The poor groom walked in alone after her. They are still together but the wedding was only 8 months ago

Re: Wedding horror stories?

went to two separate summer weddings where the AC was broken.
Another wedding, the person who was assisting the bride (a friend) put all the place cards on the tables instead of leaving them outside so no one knew where they were sitting. people started just picking random seats. extra people who did not rsvp came and took others guests' seats.

outside in pouring, torrential rain. the tents were not enough for all of the guests, nor were there enough chairs for everyone, so a ton of guests had to stand. the bride was over an hour late to her own ceremony. so everyone in nice outfits are standing out in the rain for over an hour. muddy, buggy and gross. the aisle wasnt wide enough for the bridal party to walk down so the couples looked ridiculous trying to hold hands in a single row. then we get to the ceremony and there is no cocktail hour and drinks are cash bar... and they id me, and who carries id to a wedding? i didnt even have a bag. the dinner part was kind of ok/normal. but the rest was just aggravating. i was starving, sober, wet and angry!

second worst -- went to one, where the place was gorgeous. but drinks were beer out of cans placed in coolers... and a buffet that ran out of food before half the guests even got the first serving. so half the guests got to eat and half the guests did not!! i dont drink beer and i was part of the half that didnt get food. another starving, sober and angry event!

Maryland wedding about 10 years ago.

It was at a vfw type place. They had a blow up pool with a huge palm tree in it filled with ice and crappy canned beer and there was a drink fountain with some sort of spike koolaid that kids ended up drinking.

My favorite part (because I can tell this story and it is really entertaining) was they made everyone get up and get in line to dance with the bride or groom. You had to give them money. Someone was standing next to each of them holding out a jar for you to put your cash in so there was no way around it. They then took that money and split it in half. Half went to the bride and groom and the other half went to the winner of the pie eating contest. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Not exactly my kind of wedding but what an experience.
