Weird Neighbor Issue - Wwyd

My neighbors at the end of the street have a rooster that crows blood curdling sounds anywhere from 3:30 AM until 5 am almost daily. It wakes me up al the time and I swear I just wanna march down there and the strangle the thing. They seem a bit off. They have a skull and cross bone at the edge of the driveway that says "enter if you dare" and other weird things all over the grass so talking to them is not option. I would put a note in the mailbox but the mailboxes are attached to the houses around here. Can I go to the town and complain about something like this? I don't even know where to start...

That is so annoying! What about sending them a note through the mail so you don't have to go on their property to deliver it? Do you talk to any other neighbors- if so, I'd see if they are also disturbed by the noise, if they are see if they want to get involved. If nothing changes after the note, I would think you could call the non-emergency police line regarding the noise disturbance at the time of night.

Roosters are generally not allowed in residential areas anywhere on long island. There is probably a town code they are violating.

I don't know about Suffolk, but I thought you couldn't have farm animals in Nassau (i.e. why all those petting zoo companies are not located in Nassau). Not sure where you are. I bet in Town of Hempstead you could get more info. by calling Kate Murray's Helpline.

I'd first contact the town to see if you even have a leg to stand on.

It sounds annoying, but if you start sending random notes to people who sound like they have issues to begin with, you might have a worse situation on your hands then a loud chicken.

I agree. What Town are you in?

You can check your town code & then call them. I know Town of Huntington doesn't allow roosters but will allow up to 8 chickens.

Town of Oyster Bay, you can't keep chickens without a permit from the Board of Appeals.

Southhampton, Ronkonkoma/Islip allow roosters. However the key in every town code is this: Poultry shall be deemed to constitute a nuisance or to create a hazard to public health.

Re: Weird Neighbor Issue - Wwyd

Our next door neighbor has a rooster and a couple of hens, but they are on the far side of his property, and none of our bedrooms are on the side of the house that faces his yard, so in the house, we never hear them. I don't know how the neighbors on the other side of him are doing though.... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

At least he's a really nice guy, so if anyone had a problem, they could definitely talk to him about them.

My in-laws lived down the street from a house with a rooster in East Hampton but thank goodness I only heard it if our windows were open.

I definitely say call the town to see what your options are.

It's Riverhead Town. I think I will go down there on my next day off and ask. I couldn't find anything on the website about if they are allowed to have roosters or not...

I looked up the other town codes for the OP, but the Huntington one I know because I grew up listening to my mom b!tich about the rooster that was on the street over from ours. The town would come & the owner would say it's not his rooster. My mom complained all of the time..well that was until we had a new neighbor with an air rifle.Chat Icon

Re: Weird Neighbor Issue - Wwyd

We have a bird outside the window that does this every morning at 4:30am. I feel like she is yelling at her husband all morning telling him what he needs to do while she is sitting on the eggs.

I am such a light sleeper. And it is not a pretty chirp either. It literally sounds like she is nagging all morning.

im not really sure why talking to them isn't an option?
I would say the first thing to do would be find out your town laws on the rooster, then at least give them the benefit of the doubt by asking them if there was a way they could keep the rooster inside at night. If they rebuke you, then you at least know you tried and can take it to the town

Re: Weird Neighbor Issue - Wwyd

Generally roosters are illegal. Some towns allow chicken but, no roosters. Call the town and let them know. They usually act on this pretty quickly.
