ok so lets say they get deported, will it make you feel better to know that most of these people are going back to poverty?
hummm? When the United States becomes proverty stricken, will you feel bad knowing it was because only 1/2 of the people here were paying the into the system?
Note: Not trying to be rude just something to think about..

It's not only illegal aliens- it is also legal immigrants supporting the illegal aliens.
I for one support them. There is no way they are going away and quite frankly this country doesn't have the man-power resources or money to deport them all and we certainly don't have the money to put them all in jail. They are already here, they are doing jobs that we need them to do. They should be able to become legal, they should pay into the system (even though some already are) and they should reap the rewards of paying into the system. They should have basic rights in their job- they shouldn't be forced to work crazy hours under dangerous conditions- they are human beings too.
To say, 'they should get out, they are illegal" is completely unrealistic because it is never going to happen AND as much as we don't like to admit it, we need them.
Another thing is that it is pretty interesting how illegal alients = latin american immigrants in this discussion. There are MANY other nationalities of illegal immigrant- polish, chinese, vietnamese, etc- yet all we hear about is closing the border w. Mexico.
I also recently read an article that says that 55% of all day laborers are hired by HOME OWNERS. That's right- not contractors, not businesses, but home owners who need extra work done, pick them up at Home Depot, etc. But people aren't wiling to point the fingers at themselves that they are 1) perpetuating the problem and 2) hiring people at below market/poverty line wages... it's terrible...
but then again- most Americans are incredibly unaware of how their actions affects the world around them- look at all the other selfish things we do under the banner of "freedom and individuality"
very well said.
all i have to say people will never understand if they have never lived in this people's shoes.
VERY well said...I am DISGUSTED by some of the comments on here - when you break it all down they are HUMAN - some of you are talking like they are not worthy of being called that or being treated like a human being

I'm sure many of the workers at Wendy's or McDonalds would love to have a landscaping job for $10 an hour. And that pay is by no means poverty level.
Maybe in the midwest, $10 an hour wouldn't be poverty level.
But can you honestly tell me how one would survive in NYC, the boroughs or LI on that salary?

Re: Well todays the day...U.S. Prepares for 'Day Without Immigrants'
there is no simple answer here... I have good friends that came here on visas, their visas expired and they stayed because they have nothing to go back to... they wont have jobs because there are no jobs for young people in Poland... a lot of young people leave Poland now and go to other European countries since Poland was added to European Union... anyways, they do pay taxes with the SS number they got (it is not a real SS number just one used for filing taxes) I think people like that should be given a chance of becoming legal...

Just got back from Wal-mart and it was not crowded at all. it's usually a mob scene there. I wonder if it's because of the protests.

Yes I agree they should...and if you have a tax filing SS#, it shows you are a team player! People that try to "work" or "beat" the system is a different story...and you are right there is NO simple answer...

I don't think anyone is advocating inhuman treatment- regardless of what side you're on, people who are here illegally are breaking the law, and as with everything else there are costs and benefits to all of us. No one said they weren't human.

Sorry you are wrong...
The city yesterday swore in its first crop of police recruits at the sharply reduced starting salary of $25,100 per year - amid a drop in NYPD applicants and official vows to renegotiate the pay reduction in future contract talks.
29K is way over stated!

Sounds similar to my DH and is family. They came there 16 years ago from Poland, legally. They are now all US. citizens. Everything going on now is tricky because he knows he came here legally, but he also knows that my FIL came here with a VISA and stayed illegally after it expired. Such a touchy topic.

I'm not for de-humanizing anyone. But as many posters have pointed out, why can't these people do things legally? Why should illegal immigrants reap any of the benefits afforded to legal citizens? Why should taxpaying citizens have to bear their burden? And why shouldn't they have to assimilate into the US culture?
My great-grandparents on both sides came here from Ireland. They changed their names, learned English and struggled to make it. That's something that I respect.

Well no one said that specifically but one person (sorry don't remember who and didn't look back) said that if they are not citizens, they should have no rights. I understand where that statement is coming from but I have a problem with it because the rights we have in this country are not in place because that's what we feel only legal americans deserve, but because we believe all people in general deserve these rights. Otherwise we wouldn't be off fighting wars in other countries for the purpose of "liberating" people. So it's a double-edged sword in that sense.

it's disgusting that Suffolk Co cops make over 6 figures to sit on the LIE and write tickets while the NYPD does real dangerous work and gets zip!

the fact is that unless your family is Native American or came over on the Mayflower we are ALL immigrants!!! Generations ago, however, things were done legally!!! Why can't people do it legally now, too? There were issues back then and there are issues now.

I completely agree.
This is such a conflicting issue for me as most of my family immigrated to the US legally, waited a long long time for Visas, and have worked really hard to make a better life for themselves and have made an effort to, and have, assimilated. Some came over initially illegally but worked and worked to become legal citizens and finally did.
On the other hand, I do know ALOT of people (and some are related to me) that ARE illegal and have made NO effort to assimilate or become legal and definitely are a drain on resources. And then there are those that are illegal, continue to remain illegal, but are hardworking contributing members of society.
I don't know the process for becoming legal or immigrating legally but I imagine that that process is where the problem is and that's why some immigrants do it illegally.
