We're Moving. Where can I get boxes? Any tips?

We are moving OOS. While we've moved before, we didn't have 2 kids and we moved out of our tiny, wonderful apt in NYC whereas now we are moving from one house to another. We have way more stuff now.

Where can we get some moving boxes? I checked on Amazon but they are expensive and we need lots of boxes.

Also, any tips for packing, moving etc? We've always moved ourselves in the past with a U-Haul (2 small moves) but this one just seems big and way more complicated.

I got tons of boxes at liquor stores. They are great for books, dishes, glasses and things that are heavier. I used the wine bottle separators to keep the glasses safer (after wrapping in paper). I bought most of my bigger boxes.

Try liquor stores. I always see the employees by me walking piles to the dumpster.

I also know it sounds totally ghetto, but everytime we've moved, I just throw items like linens and clothes and anything soft really into the large contractor bags. You can pick up a huge box of them at Home Depot for not a lot.

Try Craigslist. Some people give them way after moving.

staples boxes are NOT good. not sturdy enough

Uhaul or moving places will be your best option for holding up and having all sizes you will need. Uhaul will buy back unused boxes if you buy to much.

I bought boxes super cheap from a place out along the LIE just east of the Sunken meadow parkway. Its on the North service road. ITs in a strip of offices. I have never known the name just where it is.

There is a packing place in Farmingdale called Wrap & Pack.
Not sure if they sell to the public.

Go to local restaurants or delis or grocery stores. Ask if you can have boxes. My mom loves giving them away, the dumpster doesn't fill up as fast.

Re: We're Moving. Where can I get boxes? Any tips?

We got our boxes from U-Haul, and them some others from Home Depot.
Bought plain paper there as well, newspaper tends to leave a film of ink.
The U-Haul boxes were better, and they have specialized ones for dishes and glassware.

Put your dishes on their sides, don't stack them one on top of the other.
Basket coffee filters make great wrappers for glasses and cups, and cushions between plates.
I also bought some plastic storage bins (from Target on sale) for stuff that would be stored in the attic.

Keep a master list of what is in every box, and label the boxes Kitchen : 1 of 4, 2 of 4 etc.
Write the room on the top and the sides of each box, box number for your reference.

honestly.. I love the paper boxes. You know the ones in the office that paper comes in. It has holes for handles and they are meant to carry significant weight. They are small enough to easily stack and move around. I love them! I use sharpies to write on them. As a matter of fact I just tossed out 6 of them that made the trip from NY to TX and two moves and have been sitting in my garage. I have a WALL of them I need to get through! Since the profile is the width of a ream of paper, they don't take that much room.

As far as Tips to move OOS. I used PODS. I packed it all within the allotted time and had it sent to my new home. Pack the heavy stuff in the back and along the edges as braces. Heavy on the bottom as well. All things shift through a move so be conscious of that. I reduced to all that could fit in only one POD. LOL! Mattresses on the sides. Remember to fill as many open areas as you can – Think Tetris. The less wiggle room (tho not pressed) is better. I seriously reviewed all that was coming with me and thought of it as a tetris game and planned accordingly. Clothes and soft items were up top as they were lightest. Its good to keep in mind …. What goes in must come out. I had our POD delivered straight to our new place and had exactly one week to completely unpack it myself (by myself) with a 9m old. So how it packed was important. How it packed and when it was sent. All about timing. I returned the POD before any extra charges were incurred. It was overall cheaper to do it this way and ironically less stressful but planning was a big key. But that’s just the ramblings of a crazy woman! LOL

I would just buy them from a storage place, that is what I always do. They have guides and packs with different sizes.

I don't think its worth it to chase them down from other sources.

I always buy my boxes from Costco.com, actually. They are reasonably priced, good quality and get delivered to your door. There are different packages with multiple size options.

Places online like usedcardboardboxes.com have kits if you want to make it easy on yourself. It's pretty reasonable too. We used them before and the boxes were in pristine condition.

We bought a ton of boxes from Lowes and Home Depot for our last move. We got a bunch of hand me down boxes too from a family who just moved. Check craigslist or with your realtor if you are selling your current home.

The other poster had great tips. I would also suggest using towels, linens and pillows to pad breakables. Pack breakables and heavy items in smaller boxes, save the large ones for lighter stuff so they don't get too heavy. Use wardrobe boxes for clothes but be sure to pile shoes on the bottom so they don't get top heavy.

Don't use produce boxes. Sometimes bugs get in them or they may have left eggs in them. Ick.

If you use wardrobe boxes, run some packing tape across the inside bar to secure the hangers so they don't fall off.

Bought them from Home Depot.

When we moved we put it out there to get boxes from friends/family. It ended up being a LOT more trouble than its worth. Everyone was "helping" by giving us boxes. These were odd shaped, small, annoying to pack, wrong size, etc and a lot virtually useless IMHO.

It was worth it to just go to home depot and spend the money. uniform sizes, easy to label, sturdy etc.

We just moved. We gave away all of our boxes on facebook. We received a lot of boxes from friends that work in offices. the rest we bought from Home Depot. They have the cheapest prices on boxes. Wrap your breakables in packing paper (newspaper without the ink). Moving company would have rather had us pack everything in moving boxes. We had way too many smaller boxes and it made the job take much longer.

This is my suggestion as well. Easy to carry, sturdy wtih heavy weight, stack well so they don't tip off of a dolly and relatrively inexpensive.

Thanks everyone for the replies. We have a bunch of boxes but definitely need more. Will check the liquor stores 1st, then home depot.

Have packed clothes in giant rubbermaid-type containers. Had them from our move 4 yrs ago. Am labeling boxes as I go. I include what's in the box and where it's going. Worked well for us when we moved into our current house and I was 6 months pregnant.

I have lots of smaller boxes. I still have new things from when I got married 11 years ago - still in original boxes. Have china still in original boxes, toys for which I have the original boxes. Those I'm leaving as is. Moving company will hate me for that I guess but i'm not trying to pack boxes inside of boxes.

This is so much work! Doesn't help that we waited until parctically the last minute (10 days).

Keep your clothes in your drawers. They wrap it with a giant shrinkwrap/saran wrap thing and move it full.

The best boxes I ever used were the ones that the medical equipment is shipped in to hospitals. If you know anyone who works in a hospital, have them get them for you. They are super thick and sturdy.
