Re: What age do you think is "old enough" for a "kid" to dye their hair?
16 for maybe a few highlights 18 otherwise
I have never dyed my hair, wouldn't have been allowed before 18 anyway, and have just never had the desire to since. When I start going gray and have a need to, I'll probably start then... and it probably won't be far off from my natural color. I'm not too adventurous and this color has served me just fine for my 29 years.

I think 14. A few of my 6th grade students had chunky highlights. I even had a student with highlights when I taught first grade!

Re: What age do you think is "old enough" for a "kid" to dye their hair?
I don't think I would really have an age restriction. I would hope that my kid is happy with his natural color and that any change would be short lived. I think I'd be looking at the whole picture of what's going on with him and if the only thing he seemed to be getting a bit ahead of himself with was hair color, I could live with it. A streak or two would probably not bother me at all. I'd be more annoyed if his teachers or anyone took him less seriously because of something like that.

OMG...remember "sun in"? My hair would get blonder and blonder and I would tell my parents it was just the sun. I must have been in 7th grade (12ish)
Oh wow I totally rocked the sun in I used to do that in junior high. As far as dyeing it not till probably I was a junior or senior in high school although my mom used to chemically straighten my hair from a very young age (maybe 10?) It damaged my hair so badly that I would probably want my daughter to hold off on putting any kind of chemcials for as long as possible. But as a pp stated once they can afford it I wouldn't stop them.

Dh and I saw a very young girl (I think it was a girl) who had clearly died jet black hair. That got DH and I into a conversation about how young is too young to be dyeing your hair? I said I would ask you all since DH and I disagreed....so what do you think?
Did you see my neighbor ? 13 and hair dyed jet black.
My sister found it wayyy too young to let the girl dye her hair. It didn't really bother me. It looks nice on her.
It's young, but I think some girls are more into hair & makeup at a younger age than others.

Re: What age do you think is "old enough" for a "kid" to dye their hair?
i started coloring my hair in 8th or 9th grade (so age 13 or 14). i bought my own hairn dye and my parents never said a word. to me, that's a reasonable age.
i am curious though... how can you be sure that her hair was dyed? i had a friend in JSH with jet black hair, totally natural.

as someone stated: SUN IN... loved it
in latin america, a young girl can not do a lot of things until she is 15. i was not allowed to wear makeup or color my hair until i was 15.

Re: What age do you think is "old enough" for a "kid" to dye their hair?
I guess I'm in the minority. I had my daughter's hair highlighted (lightly) when she was 9.
I did it because her hair would get naturally highlighted in the summer and it looked great. But as she got older it stayed dark. I get it done so lightly that it looks natural.
I wouldn't allow her to get streaks of color or anything until she was maybe 14. She's only 12 now.

Re: What age do you think is "old enough" for a "kid" to dye their hair?
I hope to teach my child (or my nieces) that their hair color is gorgeous without the need for altering it.
that being said, probably not before the 16th birthday. I REALLY don't want my girls to be so involved in their looks before then.
ETA: I was not allowed to dye my hair until 18, and by then the allure of it had faded for me.
my grandma permed and died my moms hair from the ripe old age of 7 or 8, and my mom ALWAYS hated it, so she never wanted any of us to get involved in that (she has 3 girls).
I perma died my hair at around 22 b/c I wanted to do something different for my then boyfriend (no dh) I will NEVER EVER do that again.
I really like my hair color...it's dark with natural blonde highlights, so until I find a grey hair and I leaving things the way nature intended them.

Re: What age do you think is "old enough" for a "kid" to dye their hair?
I'm laughing reading this thread -- not that I have a problem with kids dying their hair, but I am approaching 30 and have NEVER dyed my hair. I'm realizing how very much in the minority I must be. Okay, a few times I dyed streaks of pink into my hair in junior high and high school with Kool-Aid, but I've never really dyed or highlighted my hair. Not against it at all - just have never done it. I will dye my hair when it starts to go grey for sure and I've considered getting some red highlights before then... but I'm happy with my natural color and am always afraid anything else won't go with my (super pale, freckled) complexion... so I have been avoiding it!

Re: What age do you think is "old enough" for a "kid" to dye their hair?
I wouldnt allow it till around 15/16.....
My In laws dyed my nephews mohawk at 9 yrs old blonde. I dont agree with anything like that.
I want my kids to be individuals, do things they want and be differnt if they choose, but I dont think altering your look at that age is neccesary.

Re: What age do you think is "old enough" for a "kid" to dye their hair?
I would say when they get to junior high age. My future kids will most likely be in catholic school, so they won't be able to do anything crazy except maybe highlights. If they are in public school and want blue hair, go for it but I don't believe my DH will deal with it well, so I don't see it happening!

Re: What age do you think is "old enough" for a "kid" to dye their hair?
i started doing mine in 8th grade i think - maybe just sun in back then and permanent dye def in high school....i was in beauty school at 16 so by then i had done just about anything and everything to my hair
i think hair dye and make up are two of the most harmless "self expressions" for a teenager so i think its ok....

I did the whole sun-in thing and these things called "glints" I think that lasted for seven days when I was in HS. When i was in college and finally "allowed" to dye my hair I went blonde, it looked disgusting and I have no dyed my hair since. I love my natural color and will not dye my hair until I go good and gray!

I think 16 is an OK age.
My niece is 12 and had her hair highlighted.

Re: What age do you think is "old enough" for a "kid" to dye their hair?
I was 14 when I did some funky things with color to my hair. I remember feeling an urge to be different from everyone else. It wasn't that I didn't like who I was or my natural color, I just really liked being unique. It's not permanent, harmful, or ridiculously expensive, so I don't see the big deal at all.

You're not alone Kara! I've never dyed my hair! I love my color - I probably won't ever touch it until I go grey - which I hope doesn't happen for a long time but we'll see. No one EVER believes me when I tell them I've never colored my hair - I guess because my hair is red?

Re: What age do you think is "old enough" for a "kid" to dye their hair?
DH and I were just talking about mohawks and thought what a great time to be able to express yourself -- when you are a child, exploring the world and what it has to offer and what you have to offer it....not when you are trying to find a job/career, etc
so we are open to it whenever it happens...whatever color...whatever shape. It's hair and it grows back.
I'd much rather they rebel with their hair than with their attitudes or drugs.
