Re: what are you *actually* doing to prepare for irene?
We're doing something we should have done after the last big rainfall, installing window well covers on our basement windows and filling the window wells with gravel.
We're also putting the patio set and bbq in the garage.
Other than boarding up the windows, I don't know what else we can do.

Re: what are you *actually* doing to prepare for irene?
We're figuring out where the leak in our basement is coming from that causes a flood every time it rains hard and are boarding it up.
We're bringing in outdoor furniture/putting it in the garage so it's not destroyed and flying about.
I'm buying bottles of water, but we drink bottled water anyway, so I'm just buying them today instead of when I normally grocery shop. I'm getting some D batteries...honestly, I see no need to as we have at least 20 candles in this house and two flashlights with full battery power, but if any family members come to stay with us since we're not in either of the suggested evacuation zones, they are going to yell at me for not having them, so I'm getting them.
We're only buying cat food early...not people food. I'm way more concerned about the cats than myself. DH & I will survive on what we have, but I don't think the cats would enjoy it.
ETA: We're getting plenty of ice for our cooler in case we lose power and need to save the food.

Removing window AC unit, bringing in BBQ and lawn furniture, tying down garbage cans, cleaning out storm drain in the back of the house, stocking up on snacks, movies, and booze.

Re: what are you *actually* doing to prepare for irene?
Put lawn furniture inside Clean 2 gutters that already needed it Clear the storm drain in front of my house Buy junk food Put flashlights, candles, and matches in a place we can get to easily if we can't see
That's about it.

Re: what are you *actually* doing to prepare for irene?
I have our flashlights, candles, and matches out. Got some water, threw a bag of ice in the freezer in case we lose power (hopefully it will keep things colder longer), bought some water, food, filled my car with gas, took cash out, and we're securing all of the lawn furniture and kiddie toys in our yard. Aside from that, not much else we can do. Just going to sit tight, ride it out, and hope for the best.

Re: what are you *actually* doing to prepare for irene?
* Putting patio furniture, toys, garbage cans in garage. Guess we'll put grill and propane tanks in there too, but it makes me a little nervous. * Bought water, non-perishable foods (mostly for the kids) * Bought batteries for the flashlights * Bought a battery operated radio * Bought battery operated cell phone chargers * Bought a drill pump * Picked up baby wipes and Purell in case there's no hot water * Put together a box of some new toys, games, crafts that I've been holding onto for the kids * Took some cash out of ATM * Need to fill up the other car, mine is done already.
Since it looks like we're going to be asked to evacuate packed up some stuff to bring to my mom's ahead of time: * Aerobeds * Clothes * Toiletries * Things that mean a lot to us (wedding album, baby books, kids photos) * Thinking about moving DH's car to my mom's just in case.
ETA: I read that if you have gas service to your house you shouldn't use candles since you may not realize there is a leak and blow up the house.

Re: what are you *actually* doing to prepare for irene?
I cleaned up the backyard, had the boys bring in any toys that they have out there that could fly up and cause damage. We will be taking the glass top off our patio set and putting the chairs downstairs.
We'll board our French doors and larger windows up - better safe than sorry.
We charged our batteries and have our flashlights ready.
We made sure we had full propane tanks for our bbq before we moved it into the shed.
Got some cash and filled our tanks.
I've got a couple of tupperware containers filled with water and freezing in case we lose power and we need to cool down my fridge.
I gave my overstock meats to my gf to keep in her freezer - just in case.
We'll take the AC units out of the bedroom windows.
We have filled various containers with water.
And today I ventured out and bought passionfruit juice, grenadine and rum (for hurricanes). I also bought some beer and wine.
It might wind up being nothing - but it takes nothing to prepare just in case so we don't mind. Plus it's kind of an adventure for the boys.

Re: what are you *actually* doing to prepare for irene?
I went grocery shopping early. I did not purchase anything that we normally would not eat, but I made sure to stock up. We already purchase bottled water, so I just got a few extra. I made two ice blocks with tupperwear. I filled the car up with gas. I made sure to locate and check the batteries for our flash lights I did purchase a candle in a jar which I normally would not have done, but figured it would be good to have on hand.

Re: what are you *actually* doing to prepare for irene?
Grocery shopping
Bought C&D batteries
Snacks and Alcohol - storm essentials!
Put all the yard furniture away in the shed
Secured the BBQ - didn't put it way in case we lose power, it can be used in place of an oven
We have cases and cases of water - we buy it whenever it goes on sale
Buying block ice for the coffin cooler - this will be used to store meat and other perishables in the event we lose power
Maybe fill the tub up with water in case we lose power - so we can flush the toilet
Topped off the cars gas tanks
Filled both propane tanks for the BBQ

Re: what are you *actually* doing to prepare for irene?
*Put gas in our cars *Went downstairs to storage last night to rearrange things to make sure all non-tupperware bins were off the ground. *Went to the store and got food and extra water. * Filling up the freezer w/ice. * charging all cell phones and my work laptop. * Moving our cars to a different parking lot away from trees. * Going to our mom's to put away patio furniture and making sure they (and our pets) have everything they need in case electricity goes out. * Locating emergency shelters JUST in case (Floral Park Memorial and NCC are the closest to us). * Packing a small suitcase just in case we have to evacuate at the last minute in RVC. (We're slightly south of Sunrise).
