What are your thoughts?

A friend of a friend just gave birth. The hospital has a new policy where babies stay with mom around the clock (they are only taken briefly for vitals checks). This is not optional. Mothers have no choice.

Interested in what others think about this.

Re: What are your thoughts?

I think the option should be there to bring the baby to the nursery.

I know I wouldn't have wanted to be with my baby 24/7 post C-section. I just physically couldn't. The first 12 hrs after my section I was basically out cold because I had a bad reaction to the spinal. The 12 hrs after that were hell. I did my best to care for my babies but sometimes, I needed a break. I had major surgery, I needed some recovery time. There was no way I could've cared for them around the clock while in the hospital.

Stupid policy IMO.

What are your thoughts?

That's ridiculous...so sick of "entities" telling women how to act and what to do!

Not cool. Unless you also have a nurse there in the room around the clock to pick up the baby and put him down.

I don't agree with that either. Is it a hospital around here?

What are your thoughts?

I was in a hospital where it was definitely discouraged for the baby to go to the nursery. I got violently ill one night and one of the nurses gave me a hard time when I asked if they could take him for a couple of hours. She took him but almost made me feel bad about it! Another nurse saw what shape I was in the following day and insisted they take him for a bit so I could nap. I think rooming with baby is great but the nursery should definitely be an option if the mother needs some rest.

So because you did this, you think everyone else should do the same?

Mothers should have a CHOICE. You should be able to choose to keep your baby the whole time, and I should be able to choose to send mine to the nursery for a few hours at night so I can get some rest after having major abdominal surgery.

Re: What are your thoughts?

The hospital I gave birth at in NJ was like that. At first I wasn't thrilled, but to be honest it really wasn't bad. If I really needed a couple of hours they would've taken him to the nursery (even though there really wasn't a nursery).
The nurses were very helpful with the baby, changes and baths. I really didn't mind it. Plus, the rooms were pretty nice and desent size.

Re: What are your thoughts?

That's terrible. After a c-section I needed a rest. My body needed a rest. I would find another hospital if that was the case.

Re: What are your thoughts?

The night of my csections I was so loopy from the anesthesia and sedated from the Benadryl I had to take for the itchiness(from anesthesia). I was not capable of handling a child in that condition and couldn't move to change a diaper or reach something.

I am pretty sure if the mom is not in good condition to care for the baby and they wouldn't take the baby to the nursery and something happened to the baby the hospital would be very liable. I would find out if it really is not optional. I heard Winthrop did this but that was far from my experience since they basically begged me to get some rest at night.

I would think this is true! I know hospitals "encourage" rooming in, but women need time to rest and recover. There will be plenty of time to bond and plenty sleepless nights when you get home! No woman should be made to feel guilty over sending her baby to the nursery, and honestly if anyone gave me a hard time I'd tell them I was feeling so weak and shaky I was afraid to hold the baby. Bet they'd wheel that bassinet down the hall real quick.

Wouldn't bother me at all! I had a c-section and DD had to stay in the NICU b/c of low blood sugar...so I spent the majority of my time in the NICU w/ her...I had a great recovery and attribute it to being up and moving around and spending time w/ my DD doing skin/skin and BFing. PLUS the NICU was a long walk down the hall...I had them wheel me there before I could even walk...and then as soon as I was cleared to walk, I was going on my own.

However, I agree it's not for everyone so the hospital should encourage it, but leave it as a CHOICE.

Good Sam was like that. When we did the tour they said baby stays with mama. I wasn't given the choice.

I agree. When I gave birth I kept DD with me all day and brought her to the nursery at night. I felt getting all the rest I could at night was important. Plus, the day I had the baby I was so exhausted from labor, there's no way I would've survived with her in the room with me the whole time.

I'm interested in knowing the basis for the policy. Is there some type of psychological benefit for the baby?

What are your thoughts?

DS was an emergency C-section at night and was in the NICU for the 1st 2 nights to monitor his breathing and the for fluctuating glucose #s. After that, he was in the room with me because this was the hospital's policy. BUT....I would have rather preferred him in the nursery after he came out of the NICU....just for at night. They said that this was their policy to encourage bonding and also, "because you can't put him in a nursery for others to take care of when you get home"......however, at home my DH, MIL, and mother would be there to help. Other than that, the hospital was wonderful. So I'm very torn for my next one. I'm thinking of delivering at another hospital just for this reason alone.

Re: What are your thoughts?

I had delivered dd last November at north shore manhasset and I was told they strongly encouraged rooming in...I was so nervous about this b/c I knew I was gonna want some rest...they were wonderful there..they took her when ever I wanted..she was with me all day and I usually brought her back around11:3pm....and when I went to get her first thing in the morning 7am they told me no and that they would bring her to me when it was time...I'm hoping it's this way come May because I'm having my second and the rest was the best thing for me

Re: What are your thoughts?

With my first DS I think I wanted to prove that I was super mom and kept DS with me the entire time unless they wet bathing/checking him and then he was brought right back to me. By the time I had my second I knew better. Lol! I key DS with me all day until I fed him around 11pm. Then I had them take him to the nursery. I told them if he woke up they could give him one bottle of formula and then put him back to sleep. Then to bring him to me the next time he woke up. I was able to sleep from 11pm until about 6am. That was the longest stretch of sleep I got for the next 9 months.Chat Icon
Bottom line, it should be a mothers choice. They should be able to make the decision if they need some time alone to sleep/relax/recuperate.

Oh no!
That is not what I meant at all.
Just sharing my perspective. I don't think there should be a blanket policy. Everyone has a different labor/recovery experience.

I have no issue with it. That's basically how it was at good Sam.
