what can I do about this? (neighbor problem) *update*
For as long as I remember I've been hearing fireworks in my neighborhood all year long (not just holidays). Often it's been the kind that make a "boom" sound like a bomb going off. Setting off car alarms blocks away. For the past several months they've been doing them at 9 even 10pm waking up my kids. I've recently learned where they are coming from but every time I try to go there after I hear them there's no evidence left. Today I went over after hearing them and asked one of the neighbors to confirm which house it was and then I stood in front writing down the address. The owner came out and asked what I was doing. I told them I wanted to make sure I had the right address for the cops when I call. He denied ever having fireworks and cursed at me. At the same time another neighbor came out and yelled at him saying how much they dislike what he does too The guy cursed at both of us and took a photo of my license plate
Granted I know I probably went about this the wrong way (dh is pissed at me) but what would you do now?
Do you think the police can do anything if I call the next time he sets them off?
*update*
So like many of you suggested I called the police (who by the way sounded way annoyed on the phone) I heard the first loud boom at 11:40 called shortly after and I am currently waiting for the police to come (12:50am) I am only getting madder as I wait thinking about how he woke up me and my 12 month old and now I am still up. I am tempted to say screw it and go back to bed but now I have to answer the door. Like a previous poster mentioned I'm pretty sure they won't even be able to do anything.
Oh and for all those who asked me how I was so sure I knew who it was it's hard to explain but somehow I met his next door neighbor and through her I was able to be sure it was the right house. The neighbors have actually seen him and are fed up with him.
Now at almost 1am I realized why no one else called the police. It's not going to help and its a terrible inconvenience.
If it weren't for my poor babies I wouldn't have even bothered with all this.

I am having a similar issue! What area are you in? FM me if you would like. I would just call and tell them its a nightly thing and the house it is coming from.. maybe they can look into it or at least scare the neighbor.

If there's no evidence how do you know that you are accusing the right person?

Ok I thought it was just my neighborhood. I will never understand the reason for fireworks except on July 4th.

Once I narrowed it down to the block I specifically asked a neighbor on that block

Yes, if it was after 10pm or early am and I was certain of the house. I would call a local precinct, not 911.
Is there a way to get pictures of them setting it off?
ETA: As we speak some asshole is setting off annoying fireworks.

it was blocks away and far enough that you had to drive there?
eta: I'd be worried about this guy having a pic of your license plate. All he has to do is drive around and find your car to know where you live.

Re: what can I do about this? (neighbor problem)
No sense in rehashing what you shouldn't have done.
What can you do?
Call the police the minute you hear them again. I would also explain that when you confronted him he took a picture of your license plate & you are concerned about retribution.
And I'd probably have a home security system with a camera just for extra insurance.
Fireworks don't bother me but if they're bothering you, don't be intimidated when someone is clearly breaking the law.

Re: what can I do about this? (neighbor problem)
I'm in the same situation, kind of. I'm in Bellmore and someone in the neighborhood is always shooting off fireworks once the warm weather starts. The police are usually nowhere to be found. It really bothers me because I have two young children and it's a pain putting them back to bed once they wake up from this. Not sure really what to do since I don't know who is doing it. We've tried calling the cops to come around, perhaps drive around and see who is doing it but they never come.

I still don't understand -- you asked someone you don't know about something you didn't see and then you are upset that this guy got mad at you for driving to his house getting out of your car writing down his house number and threatening to call the cops on him? All with no evidence -- if I was that guy I'd call the cops on you... Maybe that's why he wrote down your license plate. I would be careful about confronting people you obviously don't know and making accusations about something you have no evidence of them doing. I think your DH is right, I would have called the cops from my home --- and let them address the issue.

Re: what can I do about this? (neighbor problem)
I know 100% that this was the house. Not surprised that people are thinking I'm in the wrong. And like someone mentioned no sense in saying what I shouldn't have done. I was asking what to do now. I was beyond mad. They upset my babies. Sue me for having a moment of irrational behavior. The bigger picture is this guy is disrupting the peace for MANY people by doing something ILLEGAL!

I don't blame you for being angry. I'm always fearful of the debris that fireworks leave and how they can sometimes still be active.
Fireworks are illegal for a reason.

I think you know you could have handled it differently. I don't think there is any reason to kick yourself about it further.
This is about how you should handle it NOW, correct?

I would make sure your 100% is fact and not assumption or speculation by other people - before you handle this going forward - otherwise you will be the one with the trouble instead of the person you are accusing.

I agree. just bc another neighbor says its so and so doesn't mean they are right. I'd just let your local precinct know that it is an issue without accusing anyone in particular, let them do the investigative work themselves.
I'm just wondering if you should report the incident of the confrontation with him photographing your plate though.
I love fireworks myself...but M80's aren't pretty to look at or anything...they are just obnoxious. and when trying to put babies to bed i know how rough that is.
