yes you should have left a note.
Always remember had it been your car. Had someone seen it and told you "hey someone just tapped your car and drove off" how would you feel.
Sorry but that's how I feel about it. I've seen people back into my car and drive off. I have had someone literally rear-end me and tell "There's no damage" and go around me and they sped off. Damage on that rear end was none, but its not the point and the back up and crunch there was indeed damage.

Re: What do do? Dinged a car
If you really did some damage then I would've left a note. But based on what you said it seems so, so minor and insignificant that it doesn't seem worth mentioning. Tiny little dings and scratches are just part of driving and parking out in the world. If you did some major damage the right thing to do would've been to leave a note but in this case, it really doesn't seem warranted IMO.

Re: What do do? Dinged a car
I had someone leave quite a bit of damage on my car while I was getting bloodwork done last year in the parking lot. They just took off and I was stuck with it on my own so YES, I would have left a note. You should go back.

But you had damage on your car. The OP said there is maybe a 1/4" ding. What's the point of going back? There is no real damage to fix. It's not like the guy is going to file an insurance claim for a 1/4" scratch/ding. Dings and scratches happen in parking lots. Unless there is actual damage and something worth repairing what's the point of seeking out the owner and leaving a note? It really serves no purpose.

Its still the right thing to do. You damage someone else's property, you own up to it. Otherwise where is the line drawn? A 1/2 inch ding? 3/4 inch ding? I understand they likely won't take action but in the end, its not up to you to decide what is "insignificant" damage to someone else.

And I thought she said the ding wasn't in the area that she tapped the car.
If I don't see damage where I could've caused damage. I'm not going to worry about. Because I will not take responsibility for something I did not do.

...and THIS is what's wrong with our society. None cares about anyone else except themselves these days and it's very disheartening. It's not up to you to decide what someone else is going to do. Be honest and let them have the option.

Oh stop. Seriously?? My car has so many little minor dings and scratches from people opening their doors into my car in parking lots and while it's annoying, that's life. I would NEVER expect anyone to leave a note about it because what exactly will that even accomplish?
This has NOTHING to do with not caring about anyone else, it's just a completely insignificant thing to even stress about. What is she giving him the option to do exactly? Hit her up for a $1 so he can buy some touch up paint? I mean really.
Only on LIF would a tiny scratch that she may NOT have even caused somehow equate to the downfall of humanity.

Re: What do do? Dinged a car
i backed up into someones car 2 years ago. I didn't think i did any damage at all. But i couldn't just leave. I left a note and called her later (it was my sons preschool). No one saw me do it either.
She brought it to be looked at and there was about $900 worth of damage said her garage.
However my guy said that that damage was probably already there because there was no way my car could have done it. She would have had some silver paint on her car, which she didn't. Her car already had some dings in it prior.
Oh well. I did the honest thing. That's all i can do. Wouldn't have felt right any other way.

The banana eating diabetic who runs around town intentionally/unintentionally dinging cars.

Apparently it's a federal offense to some to eat a banana while walking around the supermarket, even if you plan to pay for it. Unless of course, you are a diabetic and need it because your sugar is low at the moment.

Re: What do do? Dinged a car
I just remembered something from when my daughter was in HS.
She was leaving the school and cars were parked a long the Do Not Park Fire Lane. And she ended up sideswiping a car and knocked off someones mirror. She waited a few minutes and nobody came out. So she left a note with her name and phone number.
Know what happened next? We get a call a few hours later from a COP at their house wanting us to come by with the insurance information and the family wanted her charged with leaving the scene of an accident! Are you f'ing kidding me! I was so pissed! At 1st the cop was a bit of a d!ck about it saying "well she did leave"! Didn't really matter that she left her information.
We went to the house gave them our insurance information and thankfully the cop got them to reconsider.
But seriously!

The banana eating diabetic who runs around town intentionally/unintentionally dinging cars.
probably while parking in a spot and eating their lunch in the car in a crowded parking lot?

Re: What do do? Dinged a car
If you hear from them I would go through insurance if the person wants to fix it. I once made a small ding in a woman's car door, told her to get an estimate and call me. Her estimate was for $300 so I called my ins. co and when I followed up with them the person said I really only left a little paint on her door (I had a dark gray car so it did look like I'd taken the paint off her door.)

If I knew I did no damage I would leave. I'm not going to leave a note so that someone can start blaming other damage on me.
