Posted by Hofstra26 The OP said there is maybe a 1/4" ding. What's the point of going back? There is no real damage to fix. It's not like the guy is going to file an insurance claim for a 1/4" scratch/ding. Dings and scratches happen in parking lots. Unless there is actual damage and something worth repairing what's the point of seeking out the owner and leaving a note? It really serves no purpose.
...and THIS is what's wrong with our society. None cares about anyone else except themselves these days and it's very disheartening. It's not up to you to decide what someone else is going to do. Be honest and let them have the option.
If I knew I did no damage I would leave. I'm not going to leave a note so that someone can start blaming other damage on me.
Good point!

Re: What do do? Dinged a car
Someone hit my husband's parked car a few weeks ago and did damage. She left a note. Good thing, because it was parked next to a police booth that has a camera on it.

Re: What do do? Dinged a car
Posted by Hofstra26 This has NOTHING to do with not caring about anyone else, it's just a completely insignificant thing to even stress about. What is she giving him the option to do exactly? Hit her up for a $1 so he can buy some touch up paint? I mean really.
The OP went back and left a note, so obviously she felt that she was responsible for some sort of damage, whether it be negligible or not.
I am not the only poster who suggested a note would be appropriate.
I may be old fashioned, but it's common courtesy.
You can tell me to relax, you can makes jokes about it, that's fine.

I just remembered something from when my daughter was in HS.
She was leaving the school and cars were parked a long the Do Not Park Fire Lane. And she ended up sideswiping a car and knocked off someones mirror. She waited a few minutes and nobody came out. So she left a note with her name and phone number.
Know what happened next? We get a call a few hours later from a COP at their house wanting us to come by with the insurance information and the family wanted her charged with leaving the scene of an accident! Are you f'ing kidding me! I was so pissed! At 1st the cop was a bit of a d!ck about it saying "well she did leave"! Didn't really matter that she left her information.
We went to the house gave them our insurance information and thankfully the cop got them to reconsider.
But seriously!
And hmmm, they were parked illegally at the time no? Wow, that is some set of balls!!
Right!
I mentioned that to the cop. Didn't seem to matter

Re: What do do? Dinged a car
My kids are usually in the car with me so yes I would leave a note. Trying to raise them to be honest people and want to lead by example.

What do do? Dinged a car
Does it really matter how big the ding is? You damaged someone's property. Some people care about things like that, myself included. If there is a ding on my car it's all I can see when I look at it. Some dealers charge for that if you have a lease. This is why I park far away from other cars, go for the end spots, and don't park next to cars with DINGS all over them. Because those cars usually belong to people who don't give a rats ass what their car looks like.

100% this.
some people don't care about their car... well I do.
Just b/c some people think Ohh big deal its not a big dent....... well you damaged it, fix it. dents and scratches aren't just part of driving... they're from inconsiderate people who don't know how to treat other people's stuff.

Re: What do do? Dinged a car
I once came out of a store into the parking lot and the entire front end of my brand new 2 week old car was smashed in......no note.....even I dont think it is indicative of the downfall of humanity. I have car insurance, life went on.

Legally parked or not doesn't excuse damage caused to someone's property. Last chance opportunity to avoid the accident type scenario. Makes sense to me. But leaving the scene and leaving a note... ugh.. sounds like the family just went haywire!
Example: You can't hit a car blocking your drive way (god don't I wish) to push them out of the way. LOL Cause seriously.. if only I could have so many times I wish I could have! Took forever for police to show up and only once ended up in a tow.

At that very moment, I wanted to kill someone, but like we said, life went on.

i mustve missed the banana joke
Apparently it's a federal offense to some to eat a banana while walking around the supermarket, even if you plan to pay for it. Unless of course, you are a diabetic and need it because your sugar is low at the moment.
Lol my dd LOVES bananas and literally goes ape shit if I don't get her one while at the supermarket... Now because of LIF I always wonder how many people are looking at me giving me dirty looks as I finish my daughters not yet paid for banana

What do do? Dinged a car
Some people care about their car, some people dont. Some people care if a dog pisses on the their lawn, some don't. But you are not to decide for the rest of the world what matters and what doesn't. So do what's right and admit your mistake and hope that the person is understanding about it. And if they're not then take it as a lesson learned to be more careful.
