Re: What do you think of this situation?

Totally the girls fault, and I think the waiter went easy on them with the bottle he chose. The girls should have asked for a wine list, or at the very least, asked the cost.

As a former waitress, I would fault the girls. I'm not there to determine what you want to spend. Lesson learned.

Re: What do you think of this situation?

I agree with pp's who said it's both your fault. You should have looked, but the waiter should have asked what you wanted to spend also. While I think he took advantage of you i'm more pissed at the waiter because I think this is sneaky. He brought bottles of wine that were slightly more money to you but not enough to be stunningly expensive. If this was a place where 18% gratuity is included he did this on purpose and that is wrong.

Lesson learned....if you don't care what brand you drink at least give a price point and go from there. Like another pp said you learned a lesson the cheap way. DH and I went to a nice place and ordered a glass of wine. Granted it was an expensive brand but when we saw that each glass was $30 we almost died. The whole bottle to buy was $100! We did complain and were refunded because we drank the whole bottle, and the prices were not marked correctly on the list. Still We expected it to be cheaper.

I actually do not think the waiter took advantage at all. As an experiment I just looked at the wine list online of a restaurant in Huntington that I consider to be mid range. They have an extensive wine list but only 2 Merlots. Both of which are $40. Also, when you ask for a recommendation they try to bring you something decent unless you specify your price range. When he asked what kind your indifference indicated hat you did not care about price. Otherwise, when he asked hat you should have said nothing to expensive , or o you have something in this range.

I think, without knowing the restaurant, that it sounds pretty fair and t was probably one of only a few Merlots and likely ne of e more inexpensive ones.

If the girls don't specify then it shouldn't matter. I disagree that the waiter should have given a price list if they didn't ask for one. Also, $45 isn't outrageous at all. They probably had bottles for $25 and bottles for $100 and he probably just picked the middle of the road for it.

As a former waitress, if you bring kids in their 20's the cheapest wine you have, they'll get snarky that you aren't taking them serious or assume they can't afford it, if you bring them the nicer bottles, you're taking advantage of them...I would have done what the waiter did and picked a bottle somewhere in the middle.

Re: What do you think of this situation?

100% the group's fault. You could have said "Anything, but under $30", once you say "Anything" you're opening yourself up. You're lucky it wasn't $90 per bottle.

Also, if you asked for something that's good, they might have wanted to bring you one of the better wines, which is of course going to be expensive. Also, the higher priced bottle of wine brings them a higher tip.

I don't think it's up to a waiter to assume how much you can afford based on what you look like. I've had peple judge me the other way (assume I can afford less than what I actually intended to spend), and I didn't like it.

Actually I work in sales, and we are told to always assume people can afford he cream of the crop. No one is going to be offended if you treat them like they're Rockefellers and they're really paupers, but a Rockefeller will be offended if treated like a Pauper.

Anyway, 100% your fault, sorry. Consider it a lesson learned. Also, at a restaurant, $45 for a bottle of wine isn't a lot. It might have been one of the cheaper wines on the list.

Re: What do you think of this situation?

I've never had a waiter recommend the cheapest wine on the list when I've asked for their recommendation. $45 is very reasonable and he probably could have done a lot worse. If you didn't ask for a wine list (which I assume was available to you, but you just didn't ask for), it's not the waiter's fault.

I will go against the grain.

In those situations, as I have been in them, the waiter has ALWAYS given me a HOUSE WINE. Not something fancy and certainly not something that high of a cost.

I would be pissed.

It's taking advantage of the consumer.

I mean, I think most people would feel uncomfortable and tacky to agree to a wine suggested by a waiter and then ask, "Umm..by the way..how much is it?"

Can you imagine a guy doing that on a date? It's a reasonable question, just an uncomfortable one.

I'm willing to bet they know this, and therefore, can get away with it.

Usually in these cases, the waiters I have had have confirmed the price before going to get it.

I'm on the side of the girls.

ITA. I think the waiter took advantage of a bunch of girls whom he knew had no idea about wine or prices of bottles. He totally padded the check. Their fault for not asking, but let's be real here....he definitely took advantage of them.

I don't think so necessarily. Sometimes the house red is a Cabernet. $45 could have been the cheapest or one of the cheapest Merlot.

When DH and I went to a restaurant, granted it was high end, the sommelier suggested wines to us, I picked and then he showed DH the wines on the wine list so he could see the prices. It's now my favorite wine. It's $37 a bottle at the liquor store (which for a white is a lot), and DH told me later it was actually the cheapest wine on the entire wine list at about $64. LOL

Agreed. If you ask for a recommendation, they're going to pick something they think you'll enjoy, not necessarily the cheapest. When I want the cheapest and i don't care, I ask for the "house white" or "house red"

Re: What do you think of this situation?

I would say that the girls were at fault. It is their responsibility to know the price of what they are ordering, or to give a range of what they are willing to spend. If the waiter reads me the dinner specials, without prices, I am going to be sure to ask for the price before going ahead and ordering it. Same thing, in my mind. It's not the waiter's job to know the budget.

I think that they got lucky in that situation. $45 a bottle is definitely not bad.

I agree with this. My favorite bottle of wine is about $8 at the liquor store. If I were to get it at a restaurant, it is usually $27.

They should have asked for a wine list, even if you are not a wine connoisseur, you can kind of see where you are at with the restaurant.

I think the group is at fault for not asking the price, checking the list or specifying a range.

I'd just chalk it up to a lesson learned and thankful that the waiter didn't bring over something more expensive!

Re: What do you think of this situation?

I think the girls are wrong for not asking to see a list... and are lucky they didn't get a more expensive bottle of wine.

However...I asked DH what he thought (he's a restaurant manager).. and he said that he'd consider both at fault.

The girls are at fault for not asking for a wine list, or at least giving a budget for the wine.

But DH said if his wait staff didn't ask the girls for a price range... he'd dicipline that person - as all the server is doing is boosting his check average and trying to getting a bigger tip.

I can see that side too..

Re: What do you think of this situation?

ummmm whatever=house.

this isn't the answer of someone who knows or cares about wine.
i am that person, house is fine with me.

he was in the wrong. he knew what he was doing.

if this left you feeling sour about the restaurant, i would call and speak to a manager, or email.
tell them exactly what you said and get his POV.

dh is one as well.
he would say the same.

he would be pissed if someone tried to up their tip and lose customers who feel taken advantage of.

$45 is probably mid-priced for the restaurant, probably not the cheapest , but probably not the most expensive. I would say the waiter was fair and it is the groups fault for not checking the price first or asking for the least expensive bottle.

We're not quite that stupid to be unaware of the fact that bottles of wine can cost hundreds of dollars.

Then you should have asked. I honestly don't mean that in a snarky fashion. COULD the waiter have mentioned the price, he could have, but we're also not talking about sixteen year olds. You yourself said that you and your girlfriends have gone out to restaurants plenty of times. My assumption is that in this group of friends, there are educated people, people who hold jobs, own houses, cars, etc. It has nothing to do with not knowing about wine. IMO, it would be basic common sense to ask to see a wine list if one was not provided for you or at least confirm the price if there is no wine list.

Re: What do you think of this situation?

I think I'm just reiterating what everyone else said but I would never order a bottle of wine at a restaurant without viewing the prices first. I would ask the waiter to recommend a bottle once he brings the wine list and either take or leave the recommendation. I would never leave it in his hands though, I'm sure most waiters would honestly bring you a "mid-range" wine but some might take advantage of their customers so I would never leave it in their hands entirely.

I also don't think $45 for a bottle of wine in a restaurant is bad at all--I'd say its definitely on a low-mid range for a bottle.

My original post was asking who was wrong. I have accepted that we should probably have asked for a wine list, which is why I asked in the first place-to get an opinion on the situation.

However, just because we made one silly mistake does not mean that we are fools, lacking in common sense, etc. My post to which you are responding was in regards to the "rocket scientist" comment. I'm not bothered by people thinking my friends and I were incorrect. The only posts to which I've responded negatively are ones that seem to be an evaluation of our general intelligence as opposed to a response about the situation. Therefore, I'm going to say something when people get preachy, judgmental and/or snarky.

There's also a chance that $45 was the cheapest bottle of wine this restaurant had. I know that a lot of palces I've been to, a glass is $9-$12 and the bottles start at $40-$45 each. He may have been being nice!

The girls were at fault here 100%, IMO.

I don't remember what type it was at all lol---it wasn't super recently---my friends and I were just discussing it the other day though, so I was curious for some opinions.

It was average/good whatever it was though.
