What is an average time for a 5K?
I am thinking of signing up for a 5k. I can complete the 3.1 miles but I need to alternate walking and running. What would be an ok time- not great, but not horrible. I'm afraid of being embarrassed!

Some people walk the whole thing, and everyone is there supporting one another. No need to be embarrassed no matter what your time is.
Good luck and just have fun!

Do not be too concerned about your time. People who run or walk them are all different paces. Everyone at races are at different fitness levels so it is hard to say what an average time it.

You can look up past results of the 5k you choose. I'm sure you will see times that range from 15 to over an hour. Just go out and do your best. I've found runners are the most supportive group of people and the spectators cheer for everyone who crosses the finish line.

Re: What is an average time for a 5K?
I am doing my first 5K Oct. 6 -- the Entenmann's one -- and I am on week 4 of the couch to 5K program now. I run on an outdoor track, and honestly, on some of the running intervals I feel like I am going so slow that I am running in place!
But I am still going to do the race. Even I can't run the entire thing by then and need to walk parts, or if I am going super slow, I figured it is still good to get a race under my belt, and have the experience (b/c I hope to stick with running). The Entenmann's race said that walkers AND runners are welcome for the 5K, so I figured it's not just a race for elite runners.
I am pretty out of shape, but I have no shame! I think you should sign up.

Re: What is an average time for a 5K?
I ran my first 5k in May and I am a slow runner... I remember seeing my pace at the 1 minute mark and it was 12 1/2 minutes. I finished the race at 41 minutes, my personal goal was to finish in 45.
I'm running the Tunnel to Towers 5k in September, and while I haven't been training for it the way I should, I know my endurance is much better, I'm also almost 20lbs lighter too so I'm hoping to finish in 35 minutes.

Look up the past years results to see where you would be... check the age group stats too. The results are usually in the range 17 minutes to 50 minutes.

Re: What is an average time for a 5K?
I had never run a day in mh life. I started training. I run very slow. My goal for my 1st 5k was to just run the whole thing. I did it and came in at 35.34min. There were a ton of people who finished before me but a food number of people finished after me. Good luck

Thanks for asking this. I've been wanting to do one for a while now and was afraid of being embarrassed.
Now that I see some people walk and run. I won't feel silly. So I'm going to finally do it!
You should too. Let's not worry about anyone else. We need to get our 1st one under our belts to move on.

Re: What is an average time for a 5K?
I'm a slow runner as well
Never ran before- started at age 43
I did one 5k and ran it in 34:50
I was thrilled it was under 35
I was somewhere in the middle of the pack
