Re: What is the going rate for wedding gifts these days..

are you talking cash as a gift or an actual present??

depending on how well we know the couple we give any where from $200-$300+ for the 2 of us. (i figure that 200 is the minumim to cover the plates)

I got married < 2 months ago and I'm not saying that's what I got either -- there was definitely a range!

see its a tough call since you don't know her well. I always try to at the very least cover my plates so that they didn't have to pay for me to be there.

And I got married a year ago and I didn't recieve less then 200 from a couple. and as for a signle person, the lowest we recieved was 150

this is a always a very heated topic over on LIW.. $200 seems to be the minimum as of lately for a couple, though you give what you can or what you personally feel is appropriate. I just got married in July and most common amount we received was $200-$300 from couples (some more, just a handful less)

Understandable about wanting to cover plate.. but if shes paying $150.. I cant see expecting people who barely know you to pay $300...

The lowest $$ gift or $$ equivalent we got was a $100 Macys gift card from a family of 5 who attended. The lowest gift we got was a $25 registry item from a groomsman. However, these were all OOTers which is a whole nother ballgame. Chat Icon

I would give 200 (for both me & DH) to a co-worker I didn't know well.

Well I don't know your financial situation, but $200 is def. a really decent gift. If you think she's paying more and you have more to give, you def. can but I think $200 would be a great gift.

Re: What is the going rate for wedding gifts these days..

For an adult couple, from NY, with no extenuating circumstances, I would say:

< $200 "cheap gift"
$200 -- "standard gift"
$250 -- "Nice gift"
$300 -- "Generous gift"
$300+ "wow, very generous gift"

Chat Icon (being 100% honest)

Edit: since it's just a co-worker and not family or a close friend, I think $200 or $225 is totally fine.

Re: What is the going rate for wedding gifts these days..

i'm very jaded about this whole thing after we got married 3 years ago. we did not get anywhere near $200 a couple. DHs family is all from western PA- so they had to travel to come to the wedding, PLUS things are SOOO much cheaper out there, so they have no idea what a wedding in NJ costs. we got $ 50 from most of them. whether it was a couple, or a family of 4... $50 seemed to be the average gift. we also got $125 from a NJ family of 6 - 4 of whom were grown children who all had their own jobs, $$, etc... but they didn't give us even their own cards!
we had very very few people cover their plates at ours... and i was fine with it. but even since then i've been jaded about the whole thing...

$200 to co-workers, not close family, distant friends
$300 to close friends
$500 to close family

If you read my post above, same thing happened to us. Our NY guests gave one thing, and our OOT guests gave something totally different. I remember opening boxes and thinking a $75 registry gift was generous from 2 adults who were attending. We also got a $100 gift card from a family of 5 (18-21 aged kids) who all attended. I think things are just different in NY

I do not, and never have bought into the whole "cover your plate" thing....a wedding is not a fund raiser, give what you can afford and to be honest, unless I was VERY close with a co-worker, I would decline the wedding invite all together

This is what I would give as well. $200 per couple was also the average gift we recieved from co-workers at our wedding this past August.

I know i do wish i did decline now.. but at the time i was very flattered to be invited. When i did my invites to my wedding i was pickie.. i wanted those who i felt were special to me in some way to be there.. so when i get an invite.. i feel they are doing the same.
