What would you have done at the gas pump?
I went to a full service station this morning and told the attendant "$40, 87". Next thing I know, the pump read $44..so I thought ok maybe it'll stop at $50, luckily I have the money (I usually don't on a Friday morning). Then $50 comes and it keeps going. THe guy is running around like a chicken without a head b/c the station is packed. I hop out of the truck in the rain and get it to stop at $54.02. The attendant was SO apologetic and thanked me for not yelling at him. He also said dont worry about the $14. Of course I gave him the full amount and knew that even if I didnt have all the money, I'd return later to give him the money. So I got to thinking, would people really not give him the $? I felt bad for him, he was alone and had no help. What would you do?

I would have given it to him too, although it was his fault, but he was busy and I'm sure he didn't mean it.

Re: What would you have done at the gas pump?
I might be in the minority here but I have had it happen to me. I told them $30 & I realized it was taking longer then normal. I look at the pump & it was up to $40. First off, I didn't have the extra $$ on me & personally I feel it is his job to make sure the pump stops at what you requested. When that happened to me, I gave him the $30 & he argued with me. I explained that I don't have the extra $$ & it was his fault. He apologized & agreed it was.

Re: What would you have done at the gas pump?
I probably would have given it if I had it on me but I wouldn't have made a trip back if I didn't have enough to cover it.

Re: What would you have done at the gas pump?
If he really made a mistake, and I had the money, then I would have absolutely given it to him.
This comes from my many years in retail... people make mistakes and he seemed genuinely sorry

I would have given it to him. If he was slacking off chatting or something like that I'd maybe think about it, but like you said, he was running around.
Ditto.

I would have given it to him under those circumstances.
If I didn't have the cash on me, then I would have just charged it or thrown it on my debit card.

I would give it to him. I always use my debit card at the pumps for reasons like this. If he forgets it comes out of my bank account. No big deal.

Re: What would you have done at the gas pump?
under these circumstances, it seems like he was the only one working and really lost track of the pump, so i would give him the $$. i have had something else happen to me though, when i would say 87 and the guy didn't listen and gave me premium (i didn't notice till after the tank was full) and i refused to pay the extra $$ because it was his mistake.

I understand he was busy but I go to full serve all the time and they punch in the amount you want so it doesn't go over. I think he should of done this, especially if he was really busy.

Re: What would you have done at the gas pump?
In the case you described-where I didn't think they were trying to pull a fast one, I would certainly pay. After all, you're going to need the gas eventually.

Re: What would you have done at the gas pump?
I don't really understand the POV of those who wouldn't pay... you got the gas. You would eventually need that dgas, it's not going to be wasted. Do you think you should benefit from people's mistakes? I mean, yes- I get it that if you don't have cash on you and cash is the only way you pay. But you really wouldn't return eventually?
I am not judging, I just genuinely donn't understand, bc with any other product you wouldn't be able to gain form an error. Like if you asked for 1/4 pound of baloney and they gave you half a pound- they could take 1/4 back. But he can't syphen gas out of your tank, and it's gas- it's going to be used, thusly saving you that $10 to buy it next time... It just has never occcured to me to benefit from a genuine mistake.

I don't know. I couldn't. I would have gone back another day if I didn't have the money.
like others said, if it was an issue of solely of not giving a crap, that is one thing.
but to capitalize b/c someone is overwhelmed...that would not sit right with me. I'd feel like a jerk. and I am sure they have to pay it back, if the til doesn't add up. I couldn't take money from that guy or his family.
ETA: If I was the attendant and you refused to pay, damn right I'd siphon that gas out....ask any kid from the midwest...all you need is a long enough straw and a receptacle!
