I would have given it to him.
If he was slacking off chatting or something like that I'd maybe think about it, but like you said, he was running around.
i agree. i don't think he was negligent in this case.

I would of givin him the money I had on me, and if I didn't have enough I would of went back and gave him the rest, just because he was very busy and made a mistake with my pump doesn't mean I have to be nasty and not go back and give him the money owed.
OP, I think you did the right thing!!

I would've given him the money if I had it, and if I didn't, I would come back and give it to him.

Don't they usually set it for the amount requested? Whenever I get full service, which is rare, I stare at the numbers and they always slow down before my magic number. I do think this requires going into the cash register area, so maybe he was too busy to do that?
Either way, I would probably do the same thing as you.

I would have given it to him too, although it was his fault, but he was busy and I'm sure he didn't mean it.

I would pay because it would mean I wouldn't have to return to the gas station for a while. I usually pump my own gas and fill it up each time. (Unless it's freezing and I can only make it to $30.)
However, I have a friend who is a single mom and lives on a strict budget. She might plan on putting $20 in her tank because it will last until she gets paid 2 days later. If she was to return to pay, the attendant would have to wait a few days.

I would have paid him whatever it was...but I do two things differently - First, I always fill up since I never see the point in going back sooner than I have to and Secondly, I watch the pump and if the guy were really busy I'd get out and stop it myself. I've done it where the guy was busy and it clicked off and I see him running around so I just get out and take the pump out of the car and give him the money.
Then again, I almost always go to the same station so they kind of know me.

So I was surprised...I asked a bunch of my coworkers about what they would have done (all teachers) and shockingly it seemed pretty split. Many of them said they would NOT have given him the money since it was his fault. And even though I explained that he was alone and super busy..they felt that it was his problem.
