Re: What would you have done at the gas pump?
I would have paid. It is not like he is making you pay for something you did not get or a different item or a different quality.True, you got more than what you asked for, but it is gas, something you always need, not like a blue sweater. It also doesn't go bad, like milk or eggs. Also, I would feel bad for attendant because if you don't pay the full amount, I would think he would have to pay the difference and that would not be right.

Re: What would you have done at the gas pump?
I wouldn't think twice about it. I would pay the man.
Also, i always fill up..I can't be bothered with going to the gas station more than I have to. I'm not a fan of the gas station.

it's going to be used, thusly saving you that $10 to buy it next time... It just has never occcured to me to benefit from a genuine mistake.
Agreed. It would never cross my mind to argue over it or to not pay the difference.

I would have given it to him too, although it was his fault, but he was busy and I'm sure he didn't mean it.

Well, I wasn't going to give him the extra money when the guy started getting pissy with me when I told him I didn't have the extra money. Um, who's mistake was it again?

this is true. this would bother me.
it would piss me off rather than make me feel bad for him (wrong move if you just cost me more ching than what I wanted to spend.)
then I might could possibly say eff him.

Even if he pisssed me off, I would still pay for it. I received a quantity of product at a pre-determined cost per quantity. Just because I received more than I had asked for, I wouldn't expect a discount.
One a side note, if I received a discount on a product for everytime I received a bad attitude from a salesperson, would be rich.

Re: What would you have done at the gas pump?
Having worked at my dad's gas station for a long time... this has def happened to me on a couple of occasions. It sux too cuz most people let me eat it in the end and I was running around like a chicken w/o a head. I never understood the whole premise of getting the gas - even if you got more than you asked for - and having the money to pay for it, and then making the attendant pay for it.... U eventually need the gas anyway.
Especially if you see that the person is running like a madman/madwoman.....

Re: What would you have done at the gas pump?
Ok.....It would depend. Yes he was busy and yes people make mistakes, but it is his job. I rarely have extra money on me and all of it is budgeted for exactly what I need. I would have given him the extra also if I had it, but I would not have made a special trip back if I didn't. People make mistakes, but like I said it's his job. And really how hard is it to say $40 please at a FULL service station and expect that...$40 worth of gas. Flame me if you like, but I also have a job and I can't make mistakes no matter HOW busy it gets.

I would have handed him the $40 and said you know an i'm sorry would have been all I needed to pay the full price, but now that your acting like this way I think you can pay the difference.

She said $40 worth of gas. It is his JOB to give her that. It doesn't matter what the predetermined cost per quantity is. It's a FULL SERVICE gas station. $40 worth of gas is $40 worth of gas end of story.

Re: What would you have done at the gas pump?
If he was really busy then its totally understandable. I don't know if he was chatting and ignoring his job. A couple of weeks ago, I went to full service my DS was screaming in his car seat (he was hungry) and the attendants were chatting with each other. The one guy finished the one car and continued to chat, not even approaching my car. Another car pulled up behind and he started pumping that persons car (it was right where he was chatting). I proceeded to pump my own gas and the attendant had the nerve to tell me that it was because it was cold out. I have returned cash to the person if they have given me too much back, I knew there job may be on the line if the drawer was short.

I look at it this way, it's not like you aren't going to use the gas. So why not pay ahead of time. Was it an error, yes, does he deserve to pay, no. I think you did the right thing.

Re: What would you have done at the gas pump?
I would have been annoyed but would have payed.
Actually, nobody mentioned it here (or I did not see it!) but most gas station "attendants" enter the amount of $ you are buying before pumping gas and going to the next car. That way, the pump stops automatically when it reaches the $

Very very true.....
However, there are some gas stations out there that still have the old style pumps where there is nothing electronic about them.
That's how I got hit with my mistake when it happened to me..... I had set the pump on the customers car to run slow, was running inside the service shop trying to take care of customers in the office, answering the phone, and helping the guys out in the shop, and RUNNING the whole time mind you, and got back to the car too late.....

I would have given it to him under those circumstances.
If I didn't have the cash on me, then I would have just charged it or thrown it on my debit card.
ITA. I always have a credit or debit card on me so I would have just had him charge instead of paying cash. I'm surprised more people wouldn't just pay credit in this situation.

Re: What would you have done at the gas pump?
I would give him the money and even if I didn't have the extra on me. I would ask to come back to pay the rest. I would feel guilty if I didn't. He seem genuinely apologetic so I would if he wasn't and was nasty then thats a different story.
