Re: whats your opinion on someone that works 2 jobs
I wish I could do it too. I barely have enough energy to get through my full time job.
I read somewhere that to live " comfortably" a couple on long island has to make around $183,000. I don't know any couple that makes that...insane.

I don't have any reaction - seriously. I don't think poorly of them that's for sure! I guess my only reaction is -- Wow, what a hard working person.
I see nothing wrong with it. Good for you for wanting to work extra hard for something you really want.
I agree.

Re: whats your opinion on someone that works 2 jobs
I wish I had the energy!
But mostly it doesn't surprise me, it's pretty normal. If you have kids or are saving for a house, or trying to pay debt, or are underpaid, it makes a lot of sense to take on a 2nd job.
When I hire people, we're usually their second job.

Re: whats your opinion on someone that works 2 jobs
i immediately think "wow, hard worker"
these are the things we need to do to get ahead so we can have the best things in life - and so that we can provide the best life for our children when they come along.
my parents did it - they worked so hard - and i think that is admirable.

Re: whats your opinion on someone that works 2 jobs
we both work two jobs. We got used to the money and now we can't stop! It definitely makes our lives easier and I have nothing but respect for hardworking people.
Go for it as long as you are able and to realize your dreams.

Re: whats your opinion on someone that works 2 jobs
My initial reaction to someone who works 2 jobs? WHAT A HARD WORKER & MOTIVATED PERSON!!!!
If I could work a 2nd job to bring in a little something extra I would. My job though isn't the type that I always get off at the same time. If overtime needs to be I HAVE to stay. I need to be available even if the OT isn't there.
DH works a 2nd job though. He works every Saturday and alternate Sundays as well............leaving him 2 days a month off. It's tough but he's motivated to macke our financial situation better.
Good for you for wanting to help out your family & get a good start in life!

yeah, your parents seem to be worried about image..... I say who cares?
I will say one thing, though... waitressing is hard-core. it's very exhuasting. Are you sure you can handle it after working all week long? on the flip side, if you find a place that is $$$, you would make wild tips

I have so much respect and admiration for someone who works two jobs because he/she wants something or is working towards something rather than just working the bare minimum to get by and looking for handouts.
It's tough on LI... but I really respect you for working hard to get what you want.
totally agree...My mom works 2 jobs....Works as a school nurse during the week and then works in an ER on the weekends! I don't know how she does it I really dont

Re: whats your opinion on someone that works 2 jobs
Well, considering I am seriously thinking about getting a second job, I think its perfectly fine. We all have living expenses, and we have to do what we can to get by. I don't see anything wrong with it at all.

Re: whats your opinion on someone that works 2 jobs
Hey its a sacrifice. I did it to get our down payment for our house and for our wedding. I work for the county as my full time job and I had a p/t in the lab as a medical technologist. It was hard work, but we now are married and have our house, expecting our 1st child. I wish I had the energy to work the 2nd job now for diapers and daycare. Good Luck...on your home search!!!

Re: whats your opinion on someone that works 2 jobs
My husband and I have always had two jobs - we both have our masters and beyond; he bartends and I tutor/work in a rec. center. I obviously don't see anything wrong with it, it allows us to own a home, go on vacations, and live the way we want to!

Re: whats your opinion on someone that works 2 jobs
I see nothing wrong with it. I grew up as one of 6 kids, my dad worked 3 jobs (NYPD was his main one) and my mom stayed home. We all went to Catholic/private school and they tell me every single day they wouldn't have had it any other way.
If it's something you and your DH can work out and agree on, then go for it.

Re: whats your opinion on someone that works 2 jobs
what i hear that someone is working two jobs, i usually assume it's because their first job isn't paying them enough for what they want/need, so they are working a second job to cover the extra costs.
i think it's smart and responsible of you to want to buy a house with a huge down payment. i wish i had the energy to do that!

Re: whats your opinion on someone that works 2 jobs
I have two jobs and I don't see anything wrong with it.
You and your DH have a very specific goal in mind and are doing everything possible to attain it.
If you're parents are having a tough time with it, tell them they can pay for the closing and down payment!
See what they think then...

There is nothing wrong with working 2 jobs! I think it is being a responsible adult to work for your goals instead of buying more than you can really afford or just sitting down and saying "we'll never have that"

Re: whats your opinion on someone that works 2 jobs
There is no problem working 2 jobs if you are doing it for a short time and it's "bonus" money.
But I would not count on that job to make the mortgage. - Can you work 2 jobs for 30 years? - What if you get sick and cannot work the 2nd job? - What if you lose the 2nd job?
Otherwise, if it's to help out to get some down payment and you have the energy then go for it.
And waiting tables is one of the best way to make good cash in a short time. No shame in doing it!!!!
