When did you make the switch to a highback booster seat?
DS will be 3 in September and I still have him in a 5point harness seat. But the other day when we were leaving daycare, I was talking to another mom who was putting her son in the car and she had him in a highback booster seat with the regular seatbelt. DS is just 30 lbs now. Can't he stay in the seat he's in for a while? Or do I have to make the switch?

I will keep my almost 3 year olds in their Britax's as long as possible. 5 point harness car seats are much safer than boosters IMO. Aso he is only 30 lbs...I think they have to be 40 for most boosters

DD is 4 and 34 pounds, I will keep her in her Britax Boulevard for a long time more. It goes up to 70 pounds with the 5-point harness. I am a car seat freak though

DD will be 5 in October and she is still in the Britax convertible. I will probably change her when the seat she is in now expires

DD#1 is 5. She is 43" and weighs 41lbs. She is still in carseat with 5-point restraint. I have no plan to change her. She doesn't mind either. She can buckle the whole thing herself, and doesn't mind being strapped...it is all she knows!

Re: When did you make the switch to a highback booster seat?
DS went to a booster on his 6th b-day. I'm never in a rush to move them to the next level of seating. Usually, each "advancement" in seating level is less secure than the previous level.

ITA. they are staying in the 5 point harness as long as i can...though there are high back seats with 5 point harnesses.

NYS law doesn't allow a child to be boostered until a child is 4 OR 40lbs and you must follow manufacturer's suggestions.
The bare minimum recommendation, however, is 4 AND 40.

Every step forward in car seat usage (RF to FF, FF to belt positioning booster, etc) is a step back in safety.
3 year olds don't belong in boosters, they belong in car seats. There is no reason for you to stop using the 5 point harness until you are comfortable doing so. Not to mention, your DS isn't old enough or heavy enough to legally be in a belt positioning booster. Many children aren't mature enough even at 5 to booster full time.
