in utero! but I'm a first grade teacher, so picture books are my life. We read all day still. DS is 10 months and picks up books on his own and flips through the pages himself

Ha, same here! Chat Icon

Honestly, since day 1...I know she didn't understand or even know what the heck is going on but purely for the sound of my voice. Plus it gave me something 'to do' with her Chat Icon

Re: When did you start reading books to your LO?

We started at just a couple months old. We tried to read a little every day, and once we started a bedtime routine (around 3 months or so), we read a book or 2 every night before bed. Now, he is 18 months old and he LOVES to read! We read 4-6 books at naptime and bedtime every day, and he often "reads" books while he's playing, or he'll bring a book over to us to read to him.

Re: When did you start reading books to your LO?

I started reading to DD around 1 month old. She used to stare at the pictures - only if they were appropriate for her age though (ones with dark figures in front of a white background). She's 4 months old now and seems to enjoy being read to even more. I don't feel like there's ever an age that's too young for a baby to be read to, if they enjoy it.

In utero. And every day and night since we got home from the hospital. He loves books and has not gone to bed in over two years without reading at least two stories.

From about 2/3 months on...he started taking the books out and "reading" them himself at around a year...now he wants a few books before bed every night and will either bring books over for me to read or "read" them himself throughout the day.

Re: When did you start reading books to your LO?

I started when he was a week old. Even if it was 1 board book. By 5 months old, he was interacting with the book (turning pages) and now at 21 months, he "reads" them to me!

Since day 1-DS is 19 months and has really loved it for the lsst 2 months or so. Prior to that, I don't know if he really got it.

Same for DD.

From the time I knew I was pregnant! I'm also a 1st grade teacher and I read daily to my class. Therefore, we still read daily. He doesn't have the attention span, but it's the exposure. I also count with him and go over the alphabet.

I tried to- but she has ZERO interest.
Would take the book, eat it, tear the pages, fling it.
She won't sit still long enough to be read to.
Oh well....

Re: When did you start reading books to your LO?

Wow! Looks like we need to catch up on our reading!! I have read him books just not that ofeten..He has an electronic book that he loves to turn the pages! Lately, our entire day consists of him moving around all over the place room into room exploring! I think I'll take him to the library and also buy books of our own since he seems to terrorize anything with pages!!

thanks for all your responses ladies!! Wow since day 1 for most of you!!

Re: When did you start reading books to your LO?

Pretty much from the beginning (though I don't know about the first week or so - I could hardly see straight and it's so hard to remember that time.Chat Icon )

But when we would go to put DS in his bassinet at night, I would hold him all swaddled and read him 2 books. Sometimes he would fuss, and then I'd just bounce/jiggle him to calm him.

We still do 2 books a night - after his bath we sit in the rocker in his room and read to him. He now he knows thats his cue that it's time for bed and he gets his lovey, his pacifier and snuggles up in our arms (DH and I also take turns each night.Chat Icon Chat Icon )

We sometimes read to him during the day- he LOVES to flip through his books. And sometimes he pretends he's reading. I also leave a book or 2 at the end of his crib at night when I check on him b/f I go to sleep so he has something in the morning to entertain himself with.
