when you bring your toddler someplace...?
how do they behave?
my ds (20months) has some sensory issues so he's very active and i stress when we go out. i bring books and things for him to play with but that never lasts too long. he rather run around and he gets so excited that he just laughs his butt off and gets into everything.
i'm wondering how much of this is typical a 1 1/2 year old thing and how much isn't.

That seems pretty typical to me. Steven has sensory issues and everything at that age was a temper tantrum. He didn't even know why he was crying Seems to me like your DS is just having fun. You can't expect any child to sit for long periods of time no matter where you go or what you are doing.

Re: when you bring your toddler someplace...?
Depends on her mood and what there is to entertain her (DD is 19 months). She's generally pretty well behaved but of course has her wild moments-- watch, I just jinxed myself
If it's somewhere I reallllly need her to behave (as opposed to a family member's house where it's more relaxed) I pack a bag FULL of books, toys, crayons, snacks, etc hoping to keep her entertained.
ETA: I agree with previous poster, your son's behavior definitely sounds "typical"-- he's just burning off energy. And how adorable that he laughs all the time

Re: when you bring your toddler someplace...?
Sounds pretty typical to me. DD loves when we go out - she wants to investigate everything and everyone. I have learned to bring books, travel doodle (can draw without the mess), touch and feel flash cards which she still likes to play with. She does better in places with a lot to look at b.c it is easier to keep her busy than in a quieter place. She loves to go up to people when I have my OB appts and talk with them. I find sometimes if I let her walk around a bit and investigate than she will sit for me afterwards - esp with a snack...LOL.
I have to say thought I don't know too many 18-24 month olds who CAN sit for more than a few short minutes at any time. I sometimes think she is hyper but I can't tell you how many times we go somewhere and people tell me she is very well behaved when I think otherwise...

DS is 13 months and his cousin is 2.5 yo and neither of htem can sit still for more than 2 minutes.
When I go out with DS I am armed with toys, sippy cup, lots of snacks, milk bottle, anything I think will hold his interest.

Re: when you bring your toddler someplace...?
thanks so much guys! it's so hard b/c i never really know what is "typical" and what's not anymore. since i was a special ed. teacher before having my ds i almost never saw "typically developing "children so i'm a bit out of touch i guess. i know i can't expect him to sit quietly for too long but it really takes me and my dh tag teaming him to keep him from totally running a muck (which he kind of does anyway.)
