When your child receives money for a birthday or holiday . . .
Do you a) save it in their account, b) use it to purchase things they want or need that they did not receive c) a little of both

My son has almost $4000 in savings just from cash donations from family for b-days, Christmas etc.

Re: When your child receives money for a birthday or holiday . . .
DS is only 9 weeks old but our PLAN is to put it into savings, my parents never saved for us and we paid for our college on our own, I would love from DS to never have loans. But probably do a little of both at times

Re: When your child receives money for a birthday or holiday . . .
DH and I agreed that all $ would go into DS bank account. However, when I knew there were things he needed and I knew if given cash or check DH would deposit it asap I asked certain family to give a gift card instead.

Re: When your child receives money for a birthday or holiday . . .
Everything is going into savings as DD is still a baby. I will keep doing this until she is old enough to understand and at that point, I will let her get a small toy and save the rest.

Re: When your child receives money for a birthday or holiday . . .
99% of it goes into her bank account, once in a while we may use a small amt to put toward a special toy she wants, but that is rare, we usually end up just paying for it out of our own pocket anyway

Ditto and his grandparents are always giving him tons of change so he saves it in his bank, when it gets pretty full we go to the bank together. He usually has about $100 so he puts 90 inhis account and we take $10 to the store for a purchase of his chosing

All checks and cash are going into his savings account.
Once he is older like pp said he will get to have a portion of it (5-10%) to use on what he wishes.

Re: When your child receives money for a birthday or holiday . . .
as far as i'm concerned, that money is theirs. Not to be used for anything, but put into their savings account.
When someone gives you money for your birthday, does your husband steal it? No and that's because it's not his. Same with your kids.
ETA: my son is 2 so he hasn't reached that age where he wants anything special so until we reach that point... it all goes into his savings. IMO... it's not my money to spend on things. It's his only.

Re: When your child receives money for a birthday or holiday . . .
C) A little bit of both, but in most circumstances, it's A). Generally for holidays, the kids get enough of things that they want/need and I'd rather be putting money into their savings.

Re: When your child receives money for a birthday or holiday . . .
It's in our account right now. But we keep an excel spreadsheet of all of his gifts so when we are ready to open a 529 we will move all of that money into the account.
But I will say if for some reason he receives a toy or clothes that I decide not to keep I will return it. With the gift card I receive I will hold onto it until he is begging me or needs something.

Re: When your child receives money for a birthday or holiday . . .
My kids never get that much to put into savings. For things like Christenings, Communions and Confirmations they are allowed to have a portion of the money and the rest does go in their savings account. Again, it is not much though.

Re: When your child receives money for a birthday or holiday . . .
With DS, who is 19 months it all goes into savings.
With DSS who is 14, we are flexible. He can't just spend it on random junk, but if there is something he really wants he can buy it. Most of the time the money goes into savings and then he has money when he wants something special.

So wait, if my kid wants to spend the money they received on a toy they've been eying, that's stealing? Or are you only referring to people that spend the money on things their kid NEEDS?
ETA: You know what? Nevermind. I'm pretty sure you're talking about kids that can't yet voice their opinions on what they want/need. When my kids were younger, the money went into their savings, no matter what.

Re: When your child receives money for a birthday or holiday . . .
ALL monetary gifts goes into savings. Because my son is older than DD and had more affairs, he has a nice 5 figure savings account right now. DD's is not to shabby either. Even when my aunts or uncles drop them a 10 or 20 "just because" when they see them..it goes into savings.

Do you always put your own gift money into savings? You wouldn't allow them to have a little to buy something they have had their eye on?

No sorry that's not what i meant. My son is 2. So we haven't reached that age where he wants anything like that so i wasn't even thinking that way. Sorry if it came across wrong.
