Whooping Cough Vaccine?
Had an interesting conversation with my OB today...
I had seen a full page ad in one of my pregnancy magazines about the Whooping Cough vaccine and how it was important for parents-to-be to get it because it can be horrible for newborns and newborns can't get it for awhile. I made a mental note to ask my Dr. if I remembered. Then I was in the waiting room at the Dr's office and they have those health TVs and one of the segments talked about the WC vaccine and said the same thing that the article did emphasizing "It's very important that pg women get it"
So when I get into the room with the Dr., I bring it up (and mention it was on the tv in her waiting room) she looks at my like I have three heads and said she hasn't heard of that being important for pregnant women, that adults don't really get WC, that just because it's a hot topic doesn't mean it's available/that Dr's are doing it, etc. She did say she'd look into it, but was still acting amazed that I mentioned it. I felt the need to get a wee bit defensive and mentioned again, nicely of course, IT'S ON THE TV IN YOUR WAITING ROOM (if anything, to note that I'm sure she'll be getting more questions on it!)
I'm sharing because I wonder if anyone else has heard of this and discussed it with their OB? Anyone have any whooping cough scoops?

Re: Whooping Cough Vaccine?
It was my understanding that even though adults don't really "get" it, they can be carriers..
My DH got the shot about 8 months before DS was born for work, which was good.

Re: Whooping Cough Vaccine?
My OB brought this up at my last visit. I'm going to get the vaccine after the baby is born, not while pregnant.

Re: Whooping Cough Vaccine?
I had Pertussis as an adult contracted from a kid. It was just like a bad cold.

Re: Whooping Cough Vaccine?
When I had DD last year, they gave me information on the vaccine and if I didn't want it, I had to sign a release form.
I opted not to have it.

Re: Whooping Cough Vaccine?
Thanks ladies. This helps. I'm tempted to go back there with ammo.. info from the CDC website, articles, etc. but I don't want to become "that patient". And it would be more to prove that I'm not crazy
Maybe it's something I need to discuss with my regular dr. instead?

Have you had a Tetanus shot in the last 10 years? That shot includes the vaccine for Whooping Cough
When i told my primary dr we were TTC - she advised me to get the Tetanus and specifically said b/c it protects again whooping cough

crashing from parenting board : I got the vaccine at my dd's 2 week checkup. My ped thought it was important enough for parents to get it that they offered it there.

Not necessarily... The vaccine for ADULTS that combines Pertussis and Tetanus only came out in 2005.
I had my vaccine for tetanus and diptheria (different bacteria) in 2004... I never had gotten the pertussis part.

I had it as well and I had it so much worse than this. I was out of work for almost a month and was on steroids, inhalers, cough medicine and anti-biotics. It was horrible!

What dr do you go to? I saw it in the waiting room in my dr's office but I never asked about it.

I live in Baltimore
After doing further research (and reading this thread) it seems to make more sense to wait until the baby is born to get it....
I just think Dr's should know what's playing on their waiting room tv's and be prepared to discuss!

My ped also brought it up and recommended me and dh get it. They say it is more severe if a baby gets it than an adult. We didn't end up getting it but if they had it there I would have.
