whooping cough vaccine?
I am a first time mom. All my family/friends who got the whooping cough vaccine got it right after they delivered. Now I am hearing that I will be asked to get it in the 3rd trimester.
What have you done in the past and/or what are you doing with this one this time around?
Whooping cough apparently is going around in my community right now so I am a little concerned.

whooping cough vaccine?
Oh my, there is an outbreak? Oy I hadn't heard that but I did see a story in the news about a baby in Australia that died from it recently.
I'm pretty sure my doctor said I would be getting it before giving birth but I'm going to ask next week. I know DH and my parents both got it recently.
I'm actually a bit upset -- my MIL says she can't get the vaccination because she is allergic to the tetanus booster and the whooping cough and tetunus booster are given together. She is going to be one of our caretakers from the beginning but she didn't need to get it (apparently) last year when her daughter had a baby so she thinks she's okay to not get it. I think I am bringing it up with my doctor next week because it concerns me.

whooping cough vaccine?
Dd1 in 2013 the cdc rec was in hospital right after I delivered. Dh got it as well and so did grandparents.
Dd2 in 2015 cdc rec was third trimester so baby gets antibodies. That's what I did. Everyone got boosters.
Whooping cough has come back. When dd1 was born our neighbor had if and couldn't come near us/dd1 for awhile.
It could be very serious in a newborn, even fatal.

Re: whooping cough vaccine?
Well there is a case in the high school where we live. So maybe I am exaggerating on the outbreak part haha A letter went out to our neighbors who have kids in the schools because the high schooler who has it, has an elementary school aged sibling.
My sister just had a baby and she couldn't get the shot because she has epstein bar and my mom couldn't get it because she recently had chemo and radiation. So I am nervous that our baby will be around unvaccinated people as well.

whooping cough vaccine?
My first pregnancy in 2012, I had the vaccine in the hospital right after I gave birth. This time, I was told by my OB I will be getting it in the 3rd trimester. Whooping cough scares me, I'll definitely be getting the shot.

I truly hope it's okay for them to be unvaccinated and be around the baby. My MIL called her doctor and they agreed she can't get it. She feels bad and said she understands if I don't want her around the baby but I obviously do, I just wish she could get the vaccine! Her nurse said "the baby should be protected by the 'herd' meaning that if I am immunized and breastfeeding, than the baby will be protected." I'd rather hear that from my doctor than her nurse so I'm going to confirm.

Shoreham/Wading River HS. Like I mentioned I might have overreacted saying "outbreak" but one student has it and a letter went out to all families in the district apparently.

whooping cough vaccine?
I'm assuming I'm not vaccinated if I'm supposed to get one now or after birth so I'm confused about what the concern is all about with other people near the babies. I've been babysitting and around newborns many times in the past. Also then why isn't it given to the spouse as well?

It is given to the spouse if they want it.

My husband got it as well as my parents and sister since they were around the baby all the time. With my second I got it in my 3rd trimester and everyone got boosters

Re: whooping cough vaccine?
I'm in the midst of researching this now since they just mentioned it at my 35 week appt. I don't go back till I'm 37 weeks so I'm unsure if it's worth it while I'm pregnant.
I also don't fully understand how they can recommend all these vaccines while pregnant when the actual vaccine is still new, so we don't have test studies done not pregnant, let alone pregnant. I'm not big on my child being the "testing" group. I've had 3 kids in the last 7 years and never had this vaccine before.
Also can I ask why couldn't your sister have it done bc of Epstein Barr? I haven't read anything about that, but I have Epstein Barr too.

whooping cough vaccine?
I don't know if this is true or not but my sister said she couldn't get any of the vaccines (flu shot, tdap) because it could reactivate the Epstein bar virus.
I'm researching as well since everyone I know had the shot after giving birth. In my initial booklet of info from my dr it says after too but I guess maybe it wasn't updated. My next appt is Thursday so I'm going to ask more about it.

Re: whooping cough vaccine?
I had to get it after delivery with my third son but I have heard about them giving it during pregnancy now and it makes sense. The baby receives passive immunity from you, protecting them for up to 6 months post delivery.
Honestly, I wouldn't think twice about getting this vaccine during pregnancy. The horror stories are real-babies get very, very sick from pertussis and I had the unfortunate experience of seeing an infant with it during my clinical rounds. The struggling to catch a breath even with interventions is heartbreaking.
Pertussis has been around for forever and many adults actually have it, but without the "whooping" cough part. If you ever have a chronic cough that doesn't go away it may be that. But our immune systems can fight it off better than an infant. With parents refusing vaccinations, unfortunately the rates are climbing higher again. It's very, very sad.

Re: whooping cough vaccine?
How long does the immunity last? I just got this in 2012. Can't we do a blood test to check for immunity? For instance they're wanting all these kids to now get another mmr shot. My niece got the blood test and still had the immunity so she would've been given that vaccine for nothing. I'm a little hesitant to have any shots like this while pregnant.

I had to go through this unfortunately with my now 9m old son. He contracted Pertussis at 3.5wk old. It was the most heartbreaking thing to have to see/hear. After an 8 day hospital stay with included 3 days in PICU , he was released to recover at home. We had to listen to that horrendous cough for months. Thank God he's now a healthy 9m old boy, but some kids don't make it. Get the vaccine if you can during PG.!!

The recommendation is every pregnancy. I got the shot just before I got pregnant in 2013 so I didn't get it while pregnant bc the recommendation was different then. I got it again in 2015 around 32ish weeks pregnant with #2. It's so the antibodies are transferred to the baby in utero. So it's not so much that you're immune, but to protect the baby as well.
DH and my family got it while I was pregnant with my first and they did not need to get it again.
