Why is bereavement time only 3 days?
I just dont get it. If your lost your loved one how are employers not understanding about this.
My dad just recently died and not only did i have to go through the pain in seeing my dad lay in a casket, but I also had to plan his wake and funeral. Dont these people understand. Im not gonna just let my mom take care of all the funeral arrangements.
It bothers me so much. 3 days is just not a enough. They should really up it to at least a paid week off.
Thanks for letting me vent.

I am surprised that it is not a week. When my mom passed my job gave me a week paid and if I need more time than I could use vacation days.

I know what you mean. I took the week off when my FIL died (I had to use my own days being that it wasn't my parent).

The federal Gov. policy sticks.
At the discretion of the agency, an employee may be advanced up to 104 hours of sick leave each leave year (or a proportional amount for an employee on a part-time schedule or uncommon tour of duty) for family care or bereavement purposes.

Its ridiculous!
When my mom passed I took my 3 days off. My job asked me for DOCUMENTATION of the death when I returned to work.
My friggin pricipal came to the wake!!
I still had to bring in a copy of the funeral info.
It was insluting and crass.

When my grandpa died I hopped on a plane and flew back to NY within 10 hours and I was out of work for 10 days. My employer never even mentioned the fact that I was out for that long. She even sent flowers to my mothers house.
I can't believe they can't let you have as long as you need to feel sufficiently ready. I am sorry that you lost your father!

My job only gives 3 days for a parent and only 1 day for -In-laws!

That is ridiculous. They should have given you more time.
When DH's grandfather passed away I got a full week. 3 days for berevement and because we had to travel to NY, they gave me the additional 2 days berevenment as "travel days"
They should really up it to a week for a parent

I have the same crappy policy...3 days for my parents, spouse, sibling or child. For anyone else, I have to use personal time.

My employer gives 5 days for parents, spouses, children and siblings.

I'm so sorry for your loss!! 
I totally agree and feel the same way. Three days is just not nearly enough time to grieve. Plus that's just for "immediate family". At my company you only get 1 day for "non-immediate family". Immediate family is your spouse, child, parent, or sibling. So that means you only get 1 day for a grandparent. It's absolutely ridiculous!!

I am so sorry for your loss.
Did you talk to your manager? 3 days may be the official policy, but you may be allowed more. I was allowed a bereavement day to attend a funeral that was not even really a relative.

so sorry to hear about your dad. 
at my old job the bereavement leave was also only 3 days and i always wondered the same thing. the company handbook said they would give you 3 days only for husband/wife, father/mother, grandparent, aunt/uncle, sibling, or child. how the hell are you supposed to get over the loss of such important people in only 3 days?????
thats just one of the reasons i left the corporate world to become an independent contractor.
