Every child should have the right to access education. They are not taking away the right to an education, they are taking away the access if you do not follow the rules that government, who provide the funding for that education, puts out. Anti Vaxxers have been fighting that fact for years, not to mention many in the special education world. You have the right to homeschool or put your child in a private school and then will be able to side step these restrictions.
Do I think testing should take place for schools, no I don't because if they are following the guidelines that were sent out months ago, that should be enough, but if it is mandatory, as I said previously I would have them tested for them to stay in school. Also, be prepared because I can almost guarantee that if the vaccine is available to all by the summer, it will be required for all students and staff to start school in September.
This is only partially correct with regard to this thread. There is case law that allows for mandatory vaccines and the state government still has to meet a threshold to show that the law is targeted to the public health crisis etc. There is no precedent for mandatory rapid covid testing nor has it been proven that doing so would make a difference to the public health. I don’t have time to look up the lingo but you are talking apples abs oranges.
That’s exactly how our local trifecta Democrat state got away with it last year. They very conveniently used the measles cases (which btw left zero deaths) to get rid of religious exemptions in schools and adjusted medical exemptions making them more restricted (where u have to prove to have nearly death experiences because of a vaccine to obtain one and even then u’d be lucky to find a dr willing to provide one to u and for the school to accept it). With that, they left the path open to any possible future vaccine to be added to the schedule if they see it “necessary”. Considering there are deaths with covid, it would not surprise me one bit if they decide to add the covid vaccine to the mandatory schedule. Let’s pray I’m wrong.

We as a society cannot have rights without responsibilities. And rights may be abridged under certain circumstances. That said, financial aid to the struggling is desperately needed, and I hope it comes soon.

Why not make covid testing a requirement to get unemployment? Or what other government services can we withhold access to without regular covid testing?

I guess our county DOH interprets differently than on Long Island and errs on the side of caution as this is the case in all districts here. Any teacher who teaches the student is forced to quarantine - whether they have them for multiple periods or one period... They started putting the high school lunch periods into pods because they had to quarantine so many kids (and many were outside eating while the person positive was inside).
I'm not questioning your interpretation as it makes perfect sense and there have been 0 cases documented in those who have had to quarantine from a school exposure so it is a bit over the top. I just wish it could be different.
And we are in a yellow zone but nobody I know has covid and nobody I know in the area knows anyone who has covid (except the people who tested positive in the schools if they are in their child's class).
Your DOH is definitely operating by different standards that the DOH on Long Island. It is not about erring on the side of caution, it is about following the guidelines set forward by the state. Again, I would contact the BOE because they should be pushing back for the DOH to follow the guidelines set forth by the state.

All DOHs in the Capital Region are requiring exposed teachers to quarantine. I thought that was the standard procedure for all of NYS. Those teachers just teach virtually, while the a sub oversees the classes that were not exposed. Students who were not exposed go to school as they normally would and the teacher teaches over Zoom. At the elementary level, they are requiring the entire class to quarantine so the teacher and students just teach/learn virtually during that time.

Will you allow your children to be covid tested?
My daughter is 5 and in Kindergarten and I would allow testing. Anything as long as she remains in school

Will you allow your children to be covid tested?
I will also add that every day for the past 2 weeks more and more of my HS students are moving to 100% virtual as families are getting concerned about the rise in cases.

It depends on whether or not the class is able to practice social distancing. If the kids are more than 6 feet apart on Long Island they have only been requiring those children that are in close proximity to the student that tested positive to quarantine. The entire class and the teacher is not required to quarantine unless they have prolonged exposure at less than 6 feet. It really depends on the exposure level without social distancing that takes place. We have had barely any cases in my district but this is how it has been handled here and all our communications from our super intendents reads "as per the DOH."

Same in Westchester. My district just shut down the middle school due to 4 cases because too many teachers had to quarantine.

what type of test are they requiring ? Saliva or the one that goes up the nose ?
It’s the one up the nose though some are saying they don’t go up very far when done in the school. I would need to know for sure which was being done. If it’s the one all the way up the nose absolutely not. My 5 year old would need to be held down while he screamed bloody murder. I would never want him to associate school, a place he should feel safe, with being harmed. And for those that say the test is no big deal, that’s great for you, but it would be a big deal for my kid and I’m not going to put him through that when he’s heathy. So I do hope enough other people consent.
But they won't force your child or hold them down

Every child should have the right to access education. Anti Vaxxers have been fighting that fact for years, not to mention many in the special education world. You have the right to homeschool or put your child in a private school and then will be able to side step these restrictions.
They actually completely take away education provided by any institution even private schools. So there’s only 2 options, either homeschool (where the parent is in complete charge of their kid’s education without any assistance from schools or the government) or move out of the state.
That's not true, you can go remote, remote schooling is not home schooling. There is an option if you don't want your child tested. Children are still getting an education

No. I think they send them back to class and try to get their 20% in another way. Doesn't mean they won't try at another time since it is random

Remote is literally about 1/4 of the education they should be receiving. It shouldn't even be considered education. It was a complete and utter waste of time in the spring.

I do have to admit that remote learning has gotten better since the spring (since my kids are home anywhere between 3-5 days a week). It's more synchronous and actual live teaching as opposed to do these 5 things and call it a day.
It isn't as good as in person learning, and now that we're full remote the teachers are seeing first hand what it's like to learn through a chromebook every day and how annoying it is.

I know the difference between remote learning and homeschooling. She mentioned antivaxxers (a lovely label that people love to use towards anybody that questions (a) vaccine(s)). What I said it’s exactly what happens to families that don’t vaccinate for whatever reason in NY. If the covid vaccine gets added to the mandated schedule, I can see families who refuse the covid vaccine (even if it’s just that one) having the same 2 options as families like mine that don’t vaccinate...homeschool with no help from schools or government whatsoever or move out of state.

Re: Will you allow your children to be covid tested?
That’s not true for all districts
My kids have been quarantined due to a classmate testing positive. In every case the entire class was quarantined. Desks 6 ft apart and they are behind plexiglass.
The last time the child who tested positive sat on the other side of the room and my daughter had no close contact.
ETA- my reply didn’t include the post I was referring to- it was the one that only kids who were near the positive have to quarantine, which hasn’t been my experience.
I did hear DOH changed the policy for schools because it’s impossible to keep up with contact tracing. And it doesn’t seem to spread in the class.

what type of test are they requiring ? Saliva or the one that goes up the nose ?
We're in suffolk and the district said the country is giving them the Binax now rapid tests. They said it only swabs the lower part of the nostrils.
To answer the original question, yes I would allow my kids to be tested. I would most likely arrange to be present the first time and as long as they do fine if let them be tested without me there in the future.

The thing is false negatives are super super common on those rapid tests so another false sense of security. But logic and sense seem to be out the window so nothing surprises me.

But we're talking kids without symptoms so they're not using it to test sick kids or anything (although my ped used the same test when dd was sick). At best, they'll catch a few asymptomatic cases while still proving the number in schools is low so they can stay open.

I get it but if it's giving false negatives often which it is notorious for, then really what's the point?. Several people I know were negative on the rapid and positive on the real test. Doesn't matter if you are testing well children the point of testing those well children is to accurately find asymptomatic cases because most kids who have it don't really show symptoms anyway. If a test is not reliable why use it? But hey if it floats the state boat to do this so they feel like they are doing something have at it.

Well, again since these are supposedly healthy individuals, the pcr test isn't going to do anything to help bc they're not going to quarantine until they get the results. So they'd be exposing everyone at school for several days anyway. No, the rapid test is not perfect but it's better than nothing. DH has been exposed by numerous students as have almost all of his colleagues so I appreciate any precautions that can be taken to limit that without having to shut down schools entirely.

Trust me, I'll do ANYTHING to keep schools open. There is nothing I won't do. I'm just pointing out that so much of this is false senses of security and doesn't make much sense. Another example is temperature checks to get in to certain places. So many people have no fever when they are positive. Or they don't have a fever YET. But DH has to have his temperature taken every time he walks in the gym. So everyone has a false sense of security when he could in fact be typhoid Mary but not have a fever.

what type of test are they requiring ? Saliva or the one that goes up the nose ?
We're in suffolk and the district said the country is giving them the Binax now rapid tests. They said it only swabs the lower part of the nostrils.
To answer the original question, yes I would allow my kids to be tested. I would most likely arrange to be present the first time and as long as they do fine if let them be tested without me there in the future.

I think you'd have to have your head buried pretty far in the sand to have any sense of security these days. Obviously there is no fool proof solution but you can focus only on the shortcomings of the precautions available or you can be grateful for the small bit of protection they do provide. Maybe that temperature check is going to stop the asshole that knows they're sick but would normally go to the gym anyway even if it's not catching the person that's going to get sick tomorrow. I have no false sense of security but I don't get why people want to only focus on the limitations of what we can reasonably do as if we shouldn't even bother.
