Would you be opposed to having a group home/ respite home in your neighborhood?
Someone posted about this in her FB status and is mad about this - saying she pays too much in taxes for a hotel next door.
This really, really bothered me. Am I being uptight, or is that really messed up?

It all depends on what type of group home.

It all depends on what type of group home. I can understand not wanting to house former meth-heads or pedophiles - but from what it sounds like, it is a home for adults with special needs...

Re: Would you be opposed to having a group home/ respite home in your neighborhood?
I think i would be a tad worried about the kind of people that would be roaming the neighborhood during the day..how ill or unstable.
I think there is a group home near me, my neighbor mentioned it once, and its never been trouble, that I know of.
I wouldnt be opposed though. People need a place to go to be rehabilitated.

i bought a house in my neighborhood BC it was residential and not commerical, and I gladly pay the $10,000 in taxes for a tiny piece of land in THAT kind of area, so call me mean or cold hearted but yes, i would be opposed to something like that. not because of the type of people that live there but because of the kind of building it is.

Having worked in a home for DD adults, I wouldn't have a problem with it provided parking wasn't an issue. I'd want the staff to park in their driveway (which is almost always the case).

Re: Would you be opposed to having a group home/ respite home in your neighborhood?
It would depend on what it is, there is a council estate at the end of my road, and they don't really bother me. I used to live across the street from a home for homeless young men, and they were the best neighbors, always looking out for us etc. They had a security guard on site, so we always got into our home safely!
What bothers me more is that I live near a HUGE HUGE football stadium and that on match day people park on our street and on ocassion hooligans set cars on fire etc...so thats worse than anykind of group home if you ask me.

wouldn't bug me
eta: if there was a psych ward nearby, it would be nice to have some similar neighbors that would fit in with my family

I would not be opposed to a group home for people with special needs.
I do not think I would 100% comfortable with a drug rehab home next door, unless it was a stable halfway home.
But it begs the question, where can these people go when everyone says NIMBY?

Re: Would you be opposed to having a group home/ respite home in your neighborhood?
There is a home literally diagonally across the street from me that is for developmentally delayed adults. I'm going to be 100% honest, at first, it did bother me slightly. I was worried because I have a small child, and even though she will never play in our front yard (we live on a major road)- I was worried about that.
But, they have been there for 4+ years- and I can say that it no longer bothers me. They are the quitest neighbors- and you hardly even know they are there. I see the caretakers outside with them often, and everyone looks well take care of.

Re: Would you be opposed to having a group home/ respite home in your neighborhood?
We actually did live next door to two group homes. One was for former alcoholics, ( like a sober house) and the other was for mentally ill people I think.
The neighborhood was residential, not commercial.
It wasn't that bad, but it wasn't that great either.
The sober house was fine, we never had a problem with anyone there.
The other one, well, it was mostly fine. There was one lady who spent all of her time screaming in the street. That wasn't fun in the middle of the night, or when we had to go to work and she was in the middle of our driveway. All of the people there were always in the street. It was poorly run obviously, and it was a very sad and depressing reality.
I couldn't live in that situation again, especially with children. Although, I still own that house, and things have improved a lot.
If the people there were well taken care of, then no I wouldn't mind.

Exactly. We had a group home near us when we lived in a basement apartment and it was for adults with developmental disabilities. If it was for drug addicts, violent criminals, or sex offenders, I would NOT be happy.

No - it most likely wouldn't bother me, like other posters have said - it would depend on the home.
I may feel differently if I had children.

It would depend on the type of home and it would also depend on how many of these homes are already in my area.

Re: Would you be opposed to having a group home/ respite home in your neighborhood?
I used to work in a house that was for pregnant and parenting teens and right across the street was a home for adults with Mental Retardation. The neighborhood both of these houses are in is a fairly good one - people definitely pay to live there! And many of the neighbors didn't like that either one of these residential programs were there and voiced their opinions frequently. We had rules for the girls to kind of keep the neighbors at bay, like they couldn't hang out w/ their guests in the driveway or in the front yard. We did our best to keep things quiet and peaceful, but there were occasions where there were police cars in the driveway and neighbors were peeking through their curtains to see what was going on.
As for myself, if I were living on the block where I used to work, I don't think I'd mind as long as I saw they took care of the houses (which they do) and there weren't any problems that would affect my happiness of living in my home.

If I was there first and they changed the zoning law to allow this yes I would be mad.
If it was zoned for that use before I arrived then no I wouldn't care.

yes I would be extremely upset. my DH worked @ a home for mentally disabled adults and there were a couple of times where things got a little out of control w the residents (ppl sneaking out etc)

Re: Would you be opposed to having a group home/ respite home in your neighborhood?
I would never protest or object, since we went through this kind of resistance when putting my brother in a group home...I know what it is like to get your hopes up that your loved one may have a better life only to have them dashed because people aren't open-minded enough to consider the possibility that just because someone is developmentally disabled doesn't mean they are dangerous. Not trying to flame anyone at all, its just a sensitive subject for me.
