Would you feed your baby someone else's breastmilk if you couln't BF?

I just heard of someone who pumps her milk still (her DD is 2) and donates her milk to someone.

Bizarre or OK?

I couldn't do it, or give it to my child.

But isn't that what they call a "Wet Nurse"?

NO. I'd rather use formula - you don't know what that person is putting in their body.

I couldn't but I know that women who say had Breast Cancer and lost their breasts and can't BF but want to, get it donated.

I just worry about what they other person is eating, drinking, etc.

If my baby was in NICU and they were offering him donated BM, yes I would. We drink milk that COWS donate, its just pasturised...donated BM is pasturised also. I would donate, and I would give it to my child.

No way.
I've heard of an organization though that accepts donated breastmilk, for I think it was babies in Africa.

Re: Would you feed your baby someone else's breastmilk if you couln't BF?

The breastmilk donation centers help mothers who have had cancer (and can't bf) and children who have medical conditions that require BM in order to do well. I think your friend is doing an amazing thing. They are for women in the US though.

For Africa the reason would be that a) BM helps a baby be healthier than formula and b) the water in Africa is not very good and babies can actually get sicker with formula made with the water.
But refrigation is a major issue so I am not sure how they transport donated milk to Africa.

I know my Nanny (60 years ago) was asked to pump in the hospital after having my dad because there was a sick baby whose mother was very, very sick. They didn't have all of the fancy formulas they do now, of course. And she happily did so. She said she always remembers how happy it made her to be helping other women like that.

If my child needed BM for her medical condition and I could not provide it then I would 100% give her donated breast milk.

I wouldn't unless i knew the person. Its just SO personal. I would rather use forumula.

However, I would donate breastmilk. What a great idea.

This is a site explaining why some babies NEED BM in order to thrive

http://www.breastfeeding.com/all_about/all_about_milk_banks.html

Also, about the process.

It says that adults who have had liver transplant actually do better if they have BM vs. regular milk..that is amazing.

Yes, but only for my family, but that will never happen so I wouldn't have to worry about it....

I wouldn't use it but I have heard of this for premie babies, especially those with serious health problems, who studies show do much better with BM. So I think what she is doing is wonderful and if I'd had enough of a supply to do that I might have considered it.

Re: Would you feed your baby someone else's breastmilk if you couln't BF?

I think that's an amazing selfless act that she's pumping her milk to donate.

I think its admirable. not bizarre at all. (well in our society, lets not get into that..)

and I dont think anyone that has the heart to pump her breastmilk to donate it, would even have a thought of eating anything that would/could harm a baby.

My sister pumped milk for a neighbor who asked for some, for an infection her son had in his eye. She rubbed BM on it for a day or so, and it healed instantly. She was so grateful and my sister was more than happy to give it to her.

I agree. I'd rather use formula also for this very reason.

My aunt BF my sister when my Mom was in the hospital for an operation. I would give to my child if it was from my sister.

OMG, Stacey that's so moving!!

I am not sure myself!

Back when and where I was growing up, it was a very very popular practice.

Now, if it was someone close to me who I knew well--absolutely! I would try anything i could before resorting to formula. Of course, I am hoping it won't come to that!Chat Icon

To each their own, but not for me.

If you want to hear something even more disturbing...
When I was studying prenatal massage, our instructor (total hippie-I loved her), told us that she & her firiends would physically nurse each other's kids!

Re: Would you feed your baby someone else's breastmilk if you couln't BF?

I would if I knew and trusted the person or if my child needed it to live or had a better chance of survival.

I actually thought about donating the last time because I actually had the rare problem of having too much milk. Next time around I actually plan on looking into if I can donate to help out.
