Would you let DC sleep in a crib that is 22 yrs old?
When DS was a couple of months old DH and I went away for a few days for our anniversary. Instead of letting him sleep in the pack n' play, my mother ran out and bought a porta crib. Well now that DS is going to be 1 and is pretty big he doesnt fit in there too well which I told her was going to happen to begin with (my mother tends to jump the gun when it comes to certain things). So she told me today, well I am going to get one of Aunt Cathy's crib from Nanny's? I told her, 1) those cribs (my cousins are twins) have been sitting in Nanny's basement for 22 years...they are probably filthy and who knows if they are moldy or whatever 2) the safety standards for cribs have changed ALOT over the last 22 years.
Well, apparently she is annoyed by my response. My mother and her family love to save everything b/c they think everything has sentimental value...and I can see wanting to keep a crib...but after 22 years I think it's time to let it go. Am I completely out there to not want DS to sleep in literally, a 22 yr. old crib that has been sitting in my grandmother's basement? I didn't think so...but my mother does

No, I wouldn't. Regulations, safety-wise, have changed a lot in 22 years. Yes, we all survived, but still.
I wouldn't.

Nope. My ILs had kept DH's crib all these years and my MIL was pizzed that I threw it out.
ETA: She didn't want to keep it, but she was mad that we wouldn't use it for Sarah. I didn't just toss it when she wanted it back.

Absolutely not. No Way. Not safe on so many levels, and even if it were perfectly preserved, it has been sitting for 22 years.

For safety reasons I would definitely not let my baby sleep in a crib that is that old. I agree with you that the crib probably doesn't meet today's safety standards. I wouldn't risk it.

i am a little tossed.. my cousins now 13 and 11 , 23, 21, and twins that are 19 all slept in the bassinet me and my sister slept in.... I will be 33 this yr my sister 36 ... i truly think it all depends on the crib itself and the type of crib it is.. if you clean it well it should be fine

My mother and I went through WWIII about this very same issue. She was adamant that my daughter was going to sleep in my old crib - 30 year old crib!
I printed out everything from the internet warning of the hazards of old cribs, and spoke to my pediatrician and gave all of it to her. She shut her trap very quickly after that

this is my opinion... not sure though bc i dont see what kind of shape its in ect.. it may not be sturdy anymore and a bassinet is alot different from a crib

I wouldn't use a 22 year old crib but why does your mom need a crib? Can't you just bring the PNP over?

DS occasionally (actually...maybe only 5x's) stays over night there. She doestn think a baby should sleep in a pack n' play and my mother is so crazy she wants her own crib for him to sleep in at my parents house.

I would never use a crib that old. Safety regualtions have changed. For all you know there could be lead paint on it!

Re: Would you let DC sleep in a crib that is 22 yrs old?
Can you afford to buy an inexpensive crib? I personally see nothing wrong with DC sleeping in a PNP and he's 17 months and BIG for his age. He will be using on for a week when we're on vacation.

Re: Would you let DC sleep in a crib that is 22 yrs old?
Definitely not. Too many risks with safety. Paint, width between slats, latching mechanisms, newel posts, etc. So much has changed in so many aspects of cribs, it's definitely not worth the risk.

Re: Would you let DC sleep in a crib that is 22 yrs old?
no, I get the sentimental value of baby things, but the safety factor should come first....the width of the bars have changed, the places babies can get wedged, etc in recent years so I wouldn't chance it at ALL. Explaining all of this to family members should make them understand it's just not worth it.

Re: Would you let DC sleep in a crib that is 22 yrs old?
I wouldn't.
Kmart has cribs on clearance for like $40-$80. Just tell her to buy a new one.
I would also mention that the paint on the crib (if it's painted) could have lead in it.

My son sleeps in a crib that is 35 years old whenever he stays at his grandparents. It's pretty sturdy and FIL made sure that it wasn't missing anything once the grandkids came along.

Although Im sure there are some cribs that are OK..in general you shouldnt use a crib that was manufactured before 1989..
