WWYD - Bringing home newborn to a sick toddler sibling?
DS caught a bad cold this week. He's been coughing and occasionally throws up.
We expect to have DC#2 any day now.
DS has also gotten my mom sick so they are both sick. My mom suggested that she take DS home to LI for the weekend. That way, DH and I can go to the hospital and check in without having to worry about DS.
Would you let your mom take DS for the weekend? Or should we just chance it and have sick DS visit us at the hospital and be waiting for us at home sick.

Re: WWYD - Bringing home newborn to a sick toddler sibling?
Are you being induced or something this weekend?
I would def keep a sick toddler away from the hospital. Aside from not wanting to get any of the new moms or newborns sick I would also worry his resistance is down and could pick up something else.

I am scheduled for induction for Sunday.
I was going to cancel the induction but I feel that I am super close. I have a last appointment tomorrow so I'll see how much I have progressed. Last week I was 2cm dilated and 50% effaced.

definitely let your mom take DS for the weekend.
And, I would not have him visit you and the newborn in the hospital either.

I'd let your mom take DS. The last thing you'd want is for your newborn to get a fever, which means a spinal tap at that age!

ABSOLUTELY. Send him to your moms & wash hands, wash hands, wash hands.
I brought a newborn home to a sick toddler & wound up with a newborn hospitalized for a week with a 103 fever.

Re: WWYD - Bringing home newborn to a sick toddler sibling?
When I had DD#2 - DD#1 had been having allergy issues (runny nose) for about a month. Unfortunately we weren't sure if it was becoming infected OR she was getting a cold (she got a little croupy) so we were told not to take a chance. DD went and stayed with my parents the night I went to the hospital and then had to stay with them for a week after. It was best for DD#2 and best for DD#1. I spoke with her on the phone - my parents took a ton of photos - and then when she was healthy we pretended to bring DD#2 home (we brought DD#2 to my parents home to pick DD#1 up and said we were coming home for the hospital). I was very sad to be away from her - but it was for the best.
If you mom is already sick and your DC is sick I would let your mom watch your DC for a few days - until you are sure everyone is healthy. You don't need to take that chance with a newborn - and if your DC is curious - I'm sure it will be hard to keep them away from their new sibling.

without a doubt send him to your moms!
Last thing you need is a sick toddler and possibly a sick newborn. Not fair to the NB. Also dont take him to the hospital. He might get even sicker by going and its not fair to the other people in the mat ward if you bring a sick toddler to visit. He could get someone else sick too!

ITA. If your mom is willing to take him, I would have him go. He'll have fun!
My DS came home with a cold about a week after we brought my DD home from the hospital and she ended up with RSV at 2 weeks.
I also agree with the wash hands, wash hands, wash hands! Good luck!

Re: WWYD - Bringing home newborn to a sick toddler sibling?
DS WASN'T sick and I still had my mom take him for the week! Definitely let her take him. It will let you focus on the new baby and DS will get his 1-on-1 time with grandma!

Re: WWYD - Bringing home newborn to a sick toddler sibling?
The hospital will ask that no sick people visit the newborn, even siblings.
So in this case, I'd send him home with mom.

100% have your mom watch him. Regardless of sick or not, it will be easier for you.

Re: WWYD - Bringing home newborn to a sick toddler sibling?
I am totally in the minority here, but I would wait it out. See how DS feels. You are scheduled for an induction on Sunday, today is only Wednesday. By the time you have the baby and get home, it won't be for another 6 days or so. By then, he will be better.
