WWYD? - regarding moving - sorry long!
So we have out grown our house and looking for another. We live in a neighborhood in Queens that we really like so our first thought was to buy a house here so our lives won't change too much. We found one house in the Fall that was about 95% of what we wanted but the seller ended up backing away.
Since then we explored moving to Long Island and building a house so it would be exactly what we wanted. A few problems with this is that our world would completely change in terms of daycare & babysitter plus it would add 30 minutes to my already hour commute. But I only work 3 days per week.
Last weekend the agent from the Queens house said the seller wanted to know if we were still interested in the house so now we are torn.
Pluses for Long Island are: bigger house, big yard, probably a better life for kids - but who knows? Pluses for Queens are: we are part of a neighborhood we are familiar with and our lives really wouldn't change much and my commute remains under an hour.
Any and all opinions would be much appreciated! Thanks for reading.

I totally get you... and thanks for your response. Mabye it's just the change of life style, even if it could be better, is daunting.

If it is only 3 days a week I would move to LI.

ETA: When I work I'll be leaving the house at 6:30am and not getting home until 7:30pm.

I may be bias living here but I'd say the move to LI seems in your long term best interests so I'd go for that.
Better quality of life, better school districts, better life for the kids, room to play trumps an hour commute 3x a week.

I don't know I'm kind of in the same boat. We're so torn on where to go I'm hoping a house just falls in our laps that's too good to pass up kwim?
The other consideration I'd have is taxes - Queens is probably way cheaper, so I'd have to factor that in, along with school district info (though if we stay in NYC we'll shoot for parochial school most likely).

Taxes are an issue - they are three times as high as Queens. Granted I would be sending the kids to parochial school in Queens so that would make up for some of it.

It would actually be an hour and a half each way so I would be gone for 13 hours a day on the days I work.

If you go with new construction your taxes will be MUCH higher than the taxes on existing houses.

Re: WWYD? - regarding moving - sorry long!
We were in a similar situation when we were house-hunting six years ago. As for LI, we were only looking in Western Nassau and in Queens only a couple of very specific areas.
In the end, we opted for Queens.
*Both sets of grandparents are around 5 minutes away...if that. Awesome for babysitting purposes and just spur-of-the-moment type things. For example, we go for dinner every Friday and breakfast every Sunday with my mom and dad. We eat at ILs every Thursday night (when DH is home). When I worked, they were my childcare.
*Much lower taxes. Yes, we do/will send our children to Catholic schools (our district is top-rated, but DH and I both attended Catholic schools and wanted that for our little ones), but as we know...tuition is temporary, but taxes do nothing but increase.
*Realization that LI isn't shangri-la (and that shangri-la really doesn't exist anywhere). Most of my friends and cousins live on LI...all of our lives are pretty much identical. All of our kids have friends/are involved in extra-curriculars/have a backyard in which to play (in fact, my 60x100 beats several of theirs), etc. etc. Wherever you go there you are, KWIM?
I guess that sums it up. Good luck with your decision...trust me, I know how hard it is!

Thank you for your post! Those that live in Long Island they think this decision is easy yet for those of us who really like their neighborhood in Queens knows it's hard.
