WWYD - Shih Tzu pup related

I'm torn and need advice...

So my friend works at an animal hospital. A local pet shop brought over a 3 month old female shih tzu to them as she was born with a informality on her right leg. Pet shop realized they won't be able to sell her and left her at hospital. She called me as she knows we're looking at getting a pup. We went Saturday to see her and she's the most adorable, playful pup..we fell in love with her!

So the vet placed a splint on her leg which has been on for 2 wks now, he doesn't think it'll fix issue so they are considering amputating leg as it's only in the way :( Vet says she'll be able to move around as usual on 3 legs but I don't know much about this....

My DD who's 12 said so what she'll be "special" but I don't want a sickly or crippled dog that we'll have to carry around.

WWYD??

my heart says bring her home and make her part of family but my mind is telling me Noooo, get a healthy 4 legged pup.

If that is her only issue, I wouldn't let that stop me from adopting her.
Dogs do absoultely fine with 3 legs.

Yes, she's 100% healthy besides that deformity.

I honestly wouldn't let that stop me. I rescued a dog who has a birth defect (bad knee caps) and needs multiple surgeries. At times he only has use of 3 of his legs. He is an amazing dog, I love him so much & couldnt imagine him not being part of our life.

Than really consider it.
Once she adjusts, neither of you will remember she only has 3 legs.

I think these two statements say it all. And the dog will still have more legs than you or I, she'll be able to walk on her own just fine! I'd adopt her in a heartbeat!

Are there any other options besides amputating?

Given it's a dead limb they prefer to remove than have it there in the way and useless.

Seriously your DD is awesome!!!!!

The fact that the dog is young and will learn how to adjust with 3 legs quicker than an older dog would sway me to give the dog a great home. And from the sounds of it - there's no better place for this dog to be!

Re: WWYD - Shih Tzu pup related

Just wanted to say that why my dog was 1 1/2 years old she had her leg amputated due to Cancer. She is 6 years old now a has done absolutely fine. She has a hard time on slippery floors but on carpet and outside you would never even know it.

She is a BIG dog (100lb rottweilller) and given that this puppy will be alot smaller I would venture to guess that she wouldn't have any problems at all!!

The surgey was hard and the recovery was long but in the end it was sooooo worth it for us to have so many more years with our baby.

I've been though it so feel free to FM me with any questions!!

Re: WWYD - Shih Tzu pup related

Theres a dog in my neighborhood who had to have his leg amputated after an accident. The dog is perfectly fine, friendly, playful. He walks fine, they adjust very quickly to the change from what the owners said.

Good luck if you do decide to take the puppy!

Re: WWYD - Shih Tzu pup related

Most dog adjust perfectly FINE to losing one leg, esp since the dog is so young too. I would NOT let this stop you and it will not be a sickly, crippled dog. Chat Icon
