WWYD - Summer camp
I am sending one of my DC to summer camp. SC can sort of swim....DC can swim underwater just fine, but needs to be in the shallow end so DC can stand when DC tires.
Said DC is in early elementary school.
The camp DC is going to does day trips around the island, which makes me a little nervous as is, but I need to let go a little.
HOWEVER, two of the trips are to Splish Splash....EVEN if DC was a strong swimmer, DC is so young that it makes me nervous having them go to a waterpark where someone isn't solely watching DC like a hawk. It is making me nervous that it will be a few counselors watching a lot of kids at once.
Additionally, the camp has swim time. On the registration form they asked if they could swim as a yes or no question. I circled no, bc DC is a circumstantial swimmer. Low end, underwater.....they said that if DC can't swim they will be relegated to the "kiddie" area for small children during pool time. For the safety of DC I am TOTALLY OK with that. For DC though, I feel bad if DCs friends can swim and DC has to go hang out with the "babies".
So two things: 1) would you allow them to go on the Splish Splash trips? They will be broken out into like age groups, but still, makes me a wreck! 2) Would you sign your DC up for swim lessons now to get their skills up to par to allow for full participation in pool time and peace of mind during Splish Splash trips?
Im so nervous!

No way, not even close with or without lessons! My child would have to be preteenish for a trip like that. Splish Splash can get so crowded I have heard and it's not easy to keep an eye on so many kids. Daring trip for them to take if you ask me.

This is what I was thinking. I don't think I would be comfortable with it until 6th grade or so. Im thinking about taking off the two days the camp goes to Splish Splash! I would be nervous if it was ME there, nevermind a lot of kids with say 5 counselors.

Re: WWYD - Summer camp
how old is your child? My child is in third grade and I would be fine with it but he is a great swimmer.

I would not be comfortable sending my kids to splish slash with a camp until they were in about 5th or 6th grade.

WWYD - Summer camp
My DS's camp went there last year. He was 5, and a swimmer like you describe. He also went to a pool 3 days/week. It was fine. They had a small counselor to kid ratio. I was nervous, but it turned out fine.

No.
I think 6 is too young to be going to Splish Splash without substantial supervision.
I almost drowned at a place like that as a teenager (and I am a very good swimmer).

WWYD - Summer camp
We go MANY places over the Summer, and I always see these camps come in. The counselors are ALWAYS texting, (even at the POOL which disgusts me), and the kids are not being supervised well. I would say heck no to Splish Splash, or any other field trip for that matter to be honest.

This, word for word. No camp field trips. School field trips are a different story, far better quality of supervision with teachers and parent chaperones. We too go to lots of places in the summer, and camp groups never ever look well supervised.

Re: WWYD - Summer camp
Oh good lord, you are giving me anxiety, LOL! No trips at all? I thought it was just me, needing to let go...maybe I'm not so paranoid after all.
I think I am definitely going to nix Splish Splash though - FAR too much can go wrong there.

Just to be fair, Splish Splash is not scary AT ALL. We have had season passes, and it's clean, well staffed with life guards, and a great place. Still wouldn't send my kid with a camp though.

Re: WWYD - Summer camp
I wouldn't. Even if DD knew how to swim, waterparks during the summer is a zoo. The counselors/teachers are not watching my child like a hawk and I won't send her with a camp.

Re: WWYD - Summer camp
I have one paralyzing, irrational Mom fear - it's drowning.
My kids won't be going anywhere like that without my supervision until .....I dont' know - NEVER !!
Can you just skip those 2 days of camp?

You guys are all making me really nervous... I was nervous before I sent DS, but I figured I was probably just being neurotic!

I would choose a camp that doesn't offer field trips, and doesn't have all teenagers as counselors. Also, I would ask their cell phone policy. They should be put away during work hours IMO.
